Same here , I passed a few exams and advanced driving test but then my teacher took me out where he pretended to be my pupil. He was an excellent driver and at one point pretended to mow down some pedestrians and children. They were totally oblivious to what he was doing and he was quite a distance from them but I should have reacted but froze. When we finished the lesson I got out the car and thanked him from saving me from a stressful profession. Never regretted my decision

Ronnie Moore’s defeat of Pete Smith was at Poole on 21st July 1971. He had defeated the previous holder, Richard May of Reading, the previous week to become the new holder. He lost the Helmet at Leicester on the 27th July to Ray Wilson. Wimbledon were not involved in any Golden Helmet match races after that. Trevor Hedge, earlier in the season, had been beaten by the then holder Ole Olsen at Monmore. Coincidentally, Olsen lost the Helmet by default through injury; the same method and reason he regained it at the season’s end.

Without getting into anything, I knew what I was doing, which I'm aware can turn easily into 'famous last words': mostly straight road, LED headlights on full - they literally do almost turn nite into day, a calculated risk one might say. Plus I am too familiar with at particular stretch of road having made too many similar desperaste, nite-time dashes (put the tiny violins away, sometimes shoot just happens). Plus, plus I am WAY too scared of my mum, whose car it is, to take any risk in stuffing it , but seriously, sometimes you have to do what you have to do. A friend who used to be a driving instructor, asked one pupil to go straight across a roundabout without turning left or right, they did exactly that and drove right over it. Another was asked to turn right at a roundabout, and did so, turned immediately right, the wrong way around with the roundabout on their left hand side. Another kept the car screaming in 2nd gear at 7,000 RPM for ages as they waited for the instructor to tell tell them to change up. What finally caused him to give up being a DI was the number of people who had numerous near misses, or actually hit someone or something, didn't realise why and scaringly didn't seem to even care....

Ahh for the National League days of the Easter Triangle 3TT Then in later years on Good Friday it was Lynn in the morning, Ipswich for the afternoon , then Peterborough in the evening

The guys in the office have now sent me the digital links, arranged for replacement hard copies of the two most recent editions to be sent out, and a return to Royal Mail deliveries from the 17 April 2021 edition. I have emailed to thank them and said, as I mentioned in an earlier post on here, I think the Speedway Star team has done a fantastic job all through these difficult times to enable us to enjoy our weekly speedway reading fix. My anger and frustration surrounding the deliveries over the last three weeks have been firmly aimed at the NewsTeam delivery person. Again, as I have previously mentioned before, exacerbated by the fact that the person who delivers the 'junk mail' around here posts everything fully through my letterbox, and they are laid there on the doormat in pristine condition!! What a huge shame that the actions of the odd few employees of ‘NewsTeam’ have burdened Pinegen with having to go the time, trouble and expense of sorting all this out!! Wishing everyone a Happy Easter!!

I've checked the comprehensive list that appeared in "Backtrack" some years ago and it appears that was the only occasion that Ronnie held the helmet during the period 1970-72.

Especially as access to toilets will increase the footfall though the entrance and exits to these enclosed grandstands.

Rugby Union and Cricket run their leagues with the best players expected to be missing for a good portion of the season.. What they both have going for them though is the fact that internationally both sports have done "pretty well" over the past couple of decades which then allows their domestic games to feed off their success.. And media coverage and sponsorship filter down to their level too... A very successful "Great Britain" in Speedway is really the only way the sport domestically will get interest and prosper again..

unfortunately i think there are a fair number of secret "i told you so" on this forum, just to prove a point if things fail

Good Luck with the new audiences who don’t have rose tinted glasses.When will the penny drop that there are other activities on offer that provide better value for money outside the sport.The sport is not attracting new fans in numbers in the UK in the last 10-15 years.I certainly don’t know the answer to get them back, but certainly looks a long difficult task.I am still a regular attender but it’s more a social habit these days than the entertainment factor.Hopefully at Berwick the new track shape will help in the entertainment level.Money will get much tighter for a lot of people after this pandemic with possible job losses being a factor. It will be interesting whether the year out will rekindle the enthusiasm at the track and attract bigger numbers , time will tell. My one solution is that the sport has to take a step back to a Semi- Professional level regarding riders wages to cut the wages Bill to match crowd levels.It certainly won’t effect the entertainment level IMO.

The task in getting the couch potatoes back through the turnstiles, is virtually impossible. That ship sailed many years ago.

Well, I am 7 days short of being 76 years of age. I gave up driving a couple of months ago now because I felt my concentration is not what it used to be. I did not want to hurt anyone else, or myself, for that matter, and decided the time had come for me to give up. So I did, and have no real regrets about my decision. It's an individual thing, some should pack it in early or some can go on to a hundred if all is well with them. I believe the time was right for me.

Regular eye tests should be the criteria regardless of age.

Loaning money to speedway promoters- we could see the Horton`s and Terry Lindon making a comeback

It is true of a surprising number on this forum, but not all of us.

One can't deny that the status of speedway in this country has deteriorated but there are plenty of manics on here. But I guess if speedway is all you've got to be depressed about you're probably not doing too bad.

there certainly seems to be a shortage of optimists. Me, I think we're in for a good season and I'm pleased so many young Brits are getting a go.
