'Amateur' means that they don't get paid - but pay to enter instead.

So why did you open with that statement? That looked pretty specific to me? Plus, it's a lie; ALWAYS "on his back"? As norbold stated, I was usually one of the first to jump in and help when John needed it. I often stated that John just needed to forget about posting stupid, contradictory, inflammatory, illegal, and insulting stuff, and everything would be fine. I stand by that still...

" My one big regret is falling out with Charles. I think it was 1982, it was when BL teams could name four reserves and use any two of them for any meeting. One of my four was Simon Wigg. It was near the end of the season...." Goes onto explain that Ochiltree wanted to know the team a week before so he could print extra programmes. Adams offered him six names but wasn't sure on the seventh. Ochiltree replies "It better not be Simon Wigg". Of course it was. I'll dig out my programmes to see if that can shed any light. I know Cradley had started the season with Joe Owen as number 8, Drury at 9 and Pullen at 10 and used a number of riders to cover injuries to Andy Reid at reserve - Wayne Jackson and Bill Barratt spring to mind.

I find the threads about the not-so-great (and often forgotten) riders the most interesting of all - and heaven knows, there were enough of 'em in the 80's!

What I miss are genuine speedway related themes that some posters regularly took the trouble to post.

If a lot of people call out one person for trolling or posting repeated nonsense, that is not bullying.

Had a score on pedersen under 12. 6 rides or not, that's a tough ask away from home

Yes, I was watching one last weekend, but it stopped streaming half way through one of the heats, so I use youtube first and if all else fails I shall watch one of the streams that R&R generously shares with us

Ha ha! We did refuse to dismount the grassy bank as there was no obvious good reason for insisting that we did. We'd paid our money and the redeveloped London stadium had no outside raised terracing to stand on. A single, rather aggressive steward threatened to call the police without telling us why we had to move, so we waited it out............unfortunately the Met arrived and we were returned to Waterden Rd! I must say i was a bit hurt by Colin Pratt's behaviour as a Hackney Hawks fan.

I thought I would clear this up by reading the 1982 Rulebook - how foolish was I think that would resolve the matter!!! On reading the 1982 rulebook D1.3(a) makes it clear each team must declare a named seven, elsewhere (for example C4) there are rules restricting the use of loanees. As always the rulebook is less than 100% clear (I can't find a clear statement on what replacements are allowed when a reserve should voluntarily absent themselves, B7 is probably the relevant sub-section) so it feels like Pete Adams was operating at the fringes of what was legal.

Adams definitely quotes 1982. The context was that Charles Ochiltree contacted him a week prior to Cradley's visit to Brandon to find out which reserves would be riding. Adams said he declined to confirm and subsequently he and Ochiltree never spoke again. He mentions the use of Wigg, but as I recall he was only used following Penhall's departure and not as a replacement for one of the other reserves.

We're talking about British speedway, Steve; NOTHING should surprise you as far as rules - including people not even being made aware of the rules...

The start of the Div 2 season has been delayed until May 3rd- the league are saying that this is the final delay to the season and the teams 4 postponed matches will all be ridden in May in midweek extra fixtures.

Wadim Tarasenko has joined Zielona Gora as a covid guest rider - cracking signing if he’s called upon

Now it's a "Limited Company" maybe they will work collectively to purchase/rent land to build some tracks on? Especially in areas that are reliant on Greyhound racing to provide them with a track... 20 or so BSPL share holders sharing the initial start up costs for a new venture must be a better bet than just one promoter having to go it alone... If they can buy land outright then they will have a permanent asset and any promoter promoting at that track could pay rent to the organisation rather than a third party non Speedway landlord.. Rustic Speedway initially I am sure but longer term it must be mean a more certain future by having less reliance on non Speedway landlords..

This season(different from last) it’s only to replace a rider who has been certified as having Covid.

And what's wrong with posting crap on here? There's crap posted on here everyday but you don't react to it,but you did with an 88 year old speedway enthusiast

That's a shame OFF, always enjoyed your contributions, especially in the year's gone by topics.

I visited his grave some years ago when pasing by and I have to say when standing over it I felt nothing but contempt for him.

Regardless of his talents on a speedway bike, for Speedway GB’s press office to eulogise a man who murdered his wife, then orphaned his children by killing himself is, in my opinion, the height of bad taste. And what sort of “kind wishes” are they expressing?
