Just wanted to note the recent passing of Pat. Whilst never a star he was riding for Canterbury when I attended my first ever meeting as a 10 year old in 1968 and even then to me he looked like someone from the past with his WW2 goggles and his long scarf over his face, pretty sure he had white boots at the time also. Always had time for the kids and was usually smiling broadly.. Its riders like Pat that make speedway and he left a lasting impression on me at the time. R.I.P.

Looks like MM will be on the grid next week. Another Brit in the Moto 2 race as Frasier Rodgers has got a ride.

Well done to the Plymouth management they have assembled a very attractive looking team - Crump and Pedersen will be box office at this level. Used to follow Reading up until they folded and then moved to Devon and have watched Somerset since 2014. I’ll definitely get down to Plymouth this season with the Rebels not running and I suspect a fair few Rebels fans will. It will just be great to see some live racing and the smell of methonal again. Hopefully all of the clubs that run make a success of it.

Yes. Gil was about a 5 at our level but had flitted between Wimbledon and the Southern League. Pat was probably a 2 and held his own riding in Southern teams/leagues.

Yes supporters often get somewhat engrossed with the 'star' riders but it's often the bread and butter riders who made the sport what it was/is. RIP

Pat came up to Newcastle with my favourite Gil Goldfinch in 1961 to strengthen us and gave us a much better team. I think that used to come up on the train, and we had to take vehicles to get them and their gear to the track. They stayed overnight and did the return the following morning. RIP Pat

Those early BLRC meetings truly were magnificent occasions. I saw four of them '68 to '71 and can honestly say that no other speedway meetings out of the hundreds I have seen ever made such an impression. It wasn't just the racing, it was the whole Belle Vue experience, mainly the funfair before and after. I was a Halifax fan and in '68, Eric Boocock almost won. Very exciting! The unique nature of the formula, one rider from each club guaranteeing all teams were represented, may have been frustrating for those with higher averages, but the nature of that formula meant that we saw fans from every single club on the terraces and the capacity crowds are testimony to the huge success of the event. Maybe you could see an assortment of fans at World Finals and now GP's, but the BLCR was a domestic event and that made it different and a bit special. For most of us it was also the final meeting of the season and so represented a farewell to speedway until the following year. I don't have a clear memory as to why I didn't go to any more BLRC's but I was 17/18, it was on a Saturday night, and other interests were tugging away at my loyalties. Nevertheless, speedway memories don't get any more magical than the BLRC!

Nothing to elaborate on until Local Authorities have finally made their minds up on permissible spectator numbers, there appears to be a lack of consistency which may have an impact on some clubs ability to run, it's still relatively early days in some areas.

The government issue the guidlines, but the local councils will make the final decisions. This is how it was with non league football, before the latest lockdown. Every stadium is different, in design and capacity.

All part of the game in my view, have to say if I were a ref I would take a certain amount of pleasure in letting the tapes go just as the rollers were pulling back from the tapes!

I think its high time the management ended all this guessing game. Josh Mac seems the one reading between the lines. But agree Zaine Kennedy would be my choice. Either way I think both are capable of adding a couple of points to their start average. But now with heading into 4 weeks before tapes up I would expect riders to be arriving in the UK all being well. So I dont see the point of dragging this out ? We know its not going to be a 7+ rider so we may as well just make an announcement so we all know where we stand ?

Not sure that's correct. He may only have been used after Penhall retired, but not as a replacement for Penhall...pretty sure they used R/R to cover Bruce and Wiggy at reserve in their final match at hyde rd (not certain if that was in the BL or the KO cup)

I remember when King's Lynn had the man to sort out all their commercial requirements & transform U.K. speedway Jonathan Chapman where would Speedway G.B. be now if he'd been given a free reign? P.S. Good luck Richard "spike" Knight.

Looking at that bunch of poor excuses for top tier teams. Sheffield will romp it, only resistance on the other side of the Peninnes. I might have a lower age than the Panthers average age!

Seem to remember long while ago that the capacity was 5,500, but don't quote me . '
