    Where Is British Speedway Going.

I go back to 1964, my first meeting saw Ron Mountford equal the old track record of 65.8 at Brandon What has been lost, as much as anything, is the local identity of the riders and their relationship with the fans At Coventry we had teams almost entirely made up of locally-based riders, who joined the ans in the bar afterwards, not dashing off across Europe to one of their other teams And we more or less knew they'd be there all season, and back next term too They were nearly all semi-pro, which meant riders' costs, and hence admission charges, were kept to a minimum - but it didn't detract from the honest efforts of all riders And of course, we got a full 13 heat match, plus a second half individual event (and usually a third half with bike testing and novice riders) for our reasonable admission charge And we knew there'd be a meeting every Saturday night, save for the first Saturday in the month (stock cars)
  3. Spot on, TWK - and I felt that way long before the GPs came along

Does anyone other than Sir Shoutalot call Greg "Herbie"?
  6. Between 76 and 83 it was usually the highlight of the Brandon season for me - as it meant there was no Ole Olsen on view!

Obviously no one told Rospiggarna - they managed to ride as a TEAM this week!

What was Vatcher on about? Bech clearly touched Stead, causing him to fall, but Nicholls was nowhere near Bech and had no impact on the incident Hope he felt embarrassed by his comments when he saw it on TV
  9. 7 riders missing from one race? Perhaps we should go back to the good old days, with just four riders in a race!!!

Would that be the one where his microphone wouldn't work all night, which saved us from his rabbiting on, inane questions and his peculiar pronunciations?!

tails between their legs B E E S Actually, the owners of CCFC have made it clear they will not return to the Ricoh, and are planning for a new 12,000 seater stadium!
  16. What responsibilities? For the weather? For the curfew restrictions? For the timing of the decision by the FIM jury to postpone?
  17. I think you'll find Steve Park was saying "pull the meeting" (ie call it off) rather than "pull the meeting forward" (ie start it earlier)

I wrote: "Armadale isn't a fully enclosed stadium like Ricoh There is no main road comparable with the A444, a main link between Coventry north and the M6, closer to the homes than the stadium There is no railway line directly alongside the homes and between the homes and stadium" It's all about Armadale - not fully enclosed, no main road, no railway line Seems straight forward enough, but clearly, reading your continued failure to grasp any point made to you, it wasn't straight forward enough for you I won't call you names, although one or two spring to mind!

I don't know Armadale, only what I see on Google, but I don't see a railway line directly alongside the homes and between the homes and stadium, like there is at Ricoh Contradiction? Don't understand where! An assumption, I admit, but you only mentioned viewing the Ricoh and environs on Google and not from having visited the area

Armadale isn't a fully enclosed stadium like Ricoh There is no main road comparable with the A444, a main link between Coventry north and the M6, closer to the homes than the stadium There is no railway line directly alongside the homes and between the homes and stadium Chalk and cheese, a very poor argument I don't suppose for one moment that speedway will ever be staged at the Ricoh, even a one-off event, but I do wish your comments contained some element of realism with regards to a location you've only ever visited via Google

They overlook the railway, on which 16 freight trains will have passed by within the last 24 hours - that's 16 in a day, as opposed to 15 heats (23 in a GP) per week for 7 months in a year They haven't closed down the railway!!!

???? There are no houses on Judds Lane - it leads to a footbridge over the railway line, to what are the nearest houses to the arena So,, to the west there are houses across the main road and the other side of the carpark To the east there are houses the other side of a railway line No houses to the north (all industrial) No houses to the south (retail park) Immediate access to the M6 at a location not far from M6 Toll, M42, M5, M69, M1, A14 - which is precisely why, originally, it was suggested that the new National Football Stadium, to replace the old Empire Stadium at Wembley, might be constructed on this very site Oh, and not too far from one of the locations claimed to be "the centre of England" It has a lot going for it (including being out of regular use at the moment!) and noise nimby problems are likely to be minimal at the very most Edit: There is also the likelihood of a railway station being built at the arena

Er, city if you don't mind - the 13th in the list of English towns/cities by population (305,000), Manchester is 9th (402,000). Source: http://www.ukcities.co.uk/populations/ I think you'll find that there is a very busy (and noisy) main road between the arena and the carparkIt was built as a 32,000 seater football stadium, so speedway attendances, apart from an English GP say, would be well within the capacity which the authorities allowed the construction for It has also been a regular host to pop and other music concerts, where I suspect the volume of constant noise has far outweighed the odd minute or so of speedway engines during an evening! Just get your facts checked other than staring at Google, sir!
