Team Gb Name
Midland Red replied to halifaxduke's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
What I can't get my head round is the phrase "Team GB" What's wrong with calling the team "Great Britain"? It sounds like another Americanisation "Team England"? - no, it's "England" "Team Wales"? - no, it's "Wales" Thankfully, the SWC and Sky captions all referred to "Great Britain" -

You mean the Brit who rides for Australia ! -
There is coverage of one heat, which shows Ivan holding his nerve (and line) under severe pressure from two (unidentifiable) riders - it's the same clip which is available on YouTube Incidentally, Circuits of Gold is available to view online if you Google it
-
Agreed - anyone who was in The Olympic Stadium, Wroclaw, in 1970 to witness Ivan's victory saw probably the greatest performance ever by a speedway rider in conditions that were so set up to be adverse The best seven I saw : Mauger Fundin Craven Briggs Neilsen Nordin Rickardsson

British Final And Semi Finals

What a load of . . . Do you really think that if Harris had been excluded in that race, the crash in his race against Barker would actually still have occurred? -
What a wonderfully educated and well-spoken chap Barry Briggs is ! ! ! ! Was there any need for the language he used in the interview/s ? I doubt it - it's a dreadful advert for our "family sport" to have to listen to this sort of language from one of the "greats" of speedway Nothing wrong with making his points, but I am truly disgusted at the way this comes across on this production Surely a more professional interview could have taken place so that we could actually enjoy listening to what Mr Briggs has to say Mauger and Briggs - chalk and cheese on this evidence A warning about the language at the start is all well and good, but this sort of public display of swearing wins the DVD, the sport, and Mr Briggs in particular, no plaudits whatsovever
-
That's excellent news - on which of the two dates, do you know yet?
-
If anyone is struggling to find a copy (at full price), copies are available in the bookshop at Coventry Cathedral That must be a first for a speedway tome !

Just added this collection to "Speedway Memories" http://speedwaymemories.fotopic.net/c1806139.html Enjoy!

Courtesy of Crewe TV Blogspot : "The blog has received news from Mark Potts, one of the authors of When They Were Kings - The Crewe Speedway Story about their plans to create a lasting memory of the speedway team that entertained the town between 1969 and 1975. Mark and others have been in talks with Savills (the company that manages the Grand Junction Retail Park off Earle Street) about the erection of a small plaque on the Allied Carpets building which is built on the pits bend of the old Earle Street stadium. The idea is that the constructor of the track, Colin Tucker, would fly over from New Zealand to unveil the plaque in September later this year. But guess what? The hierarchy at Savills have refused the application and, according to Mark, they have stated that they "don't want their building messed around with." As you can imagine, the lads are not happy and won't be leaving it there! They are already looking at an alternative"

Measham was the car-auction town, and The Four Counties pub is at No Mans Heath -
Enough! I keep reading these posts, and the comments in Backtrack, and wonder if anyone really understands what can happen to someone's mental state - if you've read about Kenny's background in life, you would perhaps agree that it would probably have had a destabilising effect on him, which probably led to some of the "outrageouse" things which occurfrfed during his racing career. As far as the final act of his and Pam's life, there had probably been further build up of anguish in the brain, leading to even further, tragic, instability As one who in the last two years has suffered from a series of panic attacks, and now fears what may or may not be going on inside my head, and worrying about what others may consider trivia, I begin to understand a little about what mental illness can bring - perhaps some others need to stop and thank God that they don't suffer in any small way, 'cause it's no fun, I can tell you - I've felt the walls closing in on me and the head feeling as if it's going to burst, and that's only the tip of the mental illness iceberg, I know I do wonder, however, how the tragic events at Grey Horse Farm in Bradshaw could possibly be blamed in any way for the decline in the media-popularity of speedway, unless it was the exit of one of the country's brightest star riders from the scene, one who has never really been replaced I am surprised, nay, shocked, as Parsloes' comments above - Collins was a great rider, so too was Carter, so too were Lee, perhaps Loram, before them Wigg - the final sentence from Parsloes above post is unbelievably sad and untrue RIP Kenny and Pam

Erm - so . . . . what are Tai's credentials for seeding for the GP? -
If you search for it, I think there's a lot of old speedway footage on Pathe

Harris - 2x British Champion in last 3 seasons, British GP winner 2007 'scuse me - what are Tai's credentials for seeding for the GP (third heat-leader at his club, perhaps) LOL -
But did he get the answer right?

The contestants (were they called challengers?) had to sign in - write their names on a large . . . . wasn't a whiteboard, too long ago, a large pad of paper In the middle of the program, there was a slightly different round, where the panellists were blindfolded and they had to guess the identity of a celebrity instead PS Thought of Eamonn Andrews only yesterday, when I was relating to daughter's partner about listening to World Heavyweight Championship Fights on the radio in the middle of the night in the 50s/60s - was a regular thing to wake up to listen to Johansson, Patterson, Clay, Liston, etc - Barrington Dalby and Eamonn Andrews Sorry. I digressed. I don't remember a speedway rider either!
-
There's also Burst Watermain Oh no, he's a figment of Terry Wogan's imagination, isn't he!
-
I still believe that Nigel should be honoured for services to speedway, both for club and country, rider and manager I just wish someone more qualified than I to present the case would get the thing moving

Wildcards 2010
Midland Red replied to WembleyLion's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
totaley agree, and dont have harris, he likes his beers to much the night before the gps ( still drinking passed midnight in our villa at bydgoszcz), and takes 4 races to sober up. wants the fast life, but not realy interested in being a top rider, dont let him back in for god sake Thought this had been mentioned last year, and it was agreed that he doesn't sleep well, hence the late hours drinking only soft drinks? -
Part of a double header if my memory serves me correctly
