I think the ‘it’s been going on for years’ excuse is looking at it wrong. Times change and so did the news media. You could also say the Royal family were having affairs for years etc. At one time there was nothing in the media about it. Same as all the Hollywood scandals.

More good news for locals, due to their inefficient local government...... The remaining 38 councils have yet to set out their plans. Three councils - Croydon, Thurrock and Slough - have special permission to increase tax above 5%, after effectively declaring bankruptcy.

Good to know. Always sceptical about these things for football or boxing when they say the link is in the comments......

Full episode. Link underneath. Not sure if it is a trick though, as i don't want to watch it

There is a link on youtube to watch the programme.

As far as i know he gave up around 2010, talking about finances, a new career outside the sport, and the worry of ending up with an injury that would be with him for the rest of his life. Quite possibly the bad injury that paralysed team mate Sönke Petersen the year before might have played on his mind Some riders gave up then came back a few years later. I think Henning Loof, Marcel Limberger are a couple that briefly came back. Mirko Wolter has been back for a few years now. And others like Michael Hertich and Tommy Stange seem to have resisted the comeback so far

By coincidence, i just read elsewhere that Briggo for his Golden Greats meeting at Edinburgh in the 90s wanted to charge all the track staff to get into the meeting they were going to work at, and was told to take a running jump

I was a keen cyclist. But more importantly, I was a keen speedway fan. Nowadays even if I was still as fit, I doubt I would have the enthusiasm to ride that far to watch a meeting. Not just to do with speedway, but I also feel less comfortable with all the traffic now
-
Well I used to on occasion ride down to Eastbourne and back on a Sunday. I remember being almost East Grinstead before Eddie Toogood passed me. But he stayed behind a good bit after I left I guess
-
Well i know it was in the week. I remember the horrible bike ride there and back home after work. Of all places, i was happy when i made it to Elephant and Castle roundabout. After that it was easy cycling back home. I somehow felt comfortable being in South London Apparently the first meeting was on a Thursday !! Had Wimbledon moved race day by then ? All seems so long ago
-
You might be right I remember i went to the early years. At least i think so. And i was working in Covent Garden at the time and rode out on my bike. But possibly the first meeting i took the bike on the train and rode from the local station. So it was in the week after work

Thought it was Tuesday or Wednesday ? Shuttle bus from local Railway Station

Didn't realise there was also a UK connection Funnily enough, i remember Pascal Swart wanting to get a ride in the NL through his Mother being British

Seems Grays Athletic are trying to drum up local support for their planning application At least ticking lots of boxes about community use, health of the local community and helping youth, plus the added attraction of around 30 jobs for locals and even then the trump card of an area set aside for wildflowers, insects etcOn the other side, some locals are against the development for the usual noise, traffic reasons. But possibly the main objection, and one used by the Council is the development is in the Green belt and on a flood plain I guess , the reasons the application has been turned down before, and why the Council want to find an appropriate area for the football club elsewhere
-
Well still think Swart is not english. Could be South African for instance, as there is a certain Dutch influence in names. And was also a former SA rider called Deon Swart. Or possibly Australian ? Even Sharp maybe ?

Agree Just look at the MacAllister that played in the Football World Cup for Argentina Another famous player known as 'the Englishman' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Babington A family from Scotland. Plus there was a later Brown (unrelated) who played for Argentina in 1986 World Cup https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_family_(Argentina) Anyway, i think Swart is more a Dutch name. And there was at least one Dutch rider, Pascal Swart i remember

Yes. Invite them all to the pensioners Xmas party and that is all

What i find strange is the football club have found a site and put another planning application in a few days before this meeting. Ok the Council it seems have rejected applications for this site before. So are the Council basically saying this new application will also fail … I guess one thing going for both is that the Council must be hoping for something positive to report after all the negative news
-
Ok, i thought this would involve financial support from the Council, at least in finding a suitable site for the football club etc
