  1. The best burgers in speedway were at Newcastle in the early 00's. Track burgers were crap so we bought prime beef direct from a small butcher and served them them in a specially provided caravan beside the office doors. We used to sell out every week with big queues and the track owners were against us selling them and we had to pay a premium for selling from the caravan. We then started to serve hot drinks as well, as the owners had not provided a disabled lift as per the regulations and it meant that disabled fans didn't need to go upstairs for anything. We got loads of praise for the quality of the beef. Perhaps Halifaxtiger can remember them, can you Chris ?.

Last year my grandson and I were at the Peterborough v Sheffield match where there was all the trouble with the tyres not being fit for purpose on the day. The problem with the tyres had been a regular problem at this and a couple of other tracks and discussions took place between all and sundry about the problem and then it all went quiet.

Has anything been resolved regarding this issue apart from supplying each riders with two tyres instead of one for a meeting?

I seem to remember Scott Nicholls offering to assist with any testing, was this ever taken up?

Does anyone know if anything has been sorted out regarding this serious problem or is it another head in the sand job and hope no rider ends up seriously injured?

I think I read that the tyres that were issued and used in that meeting had been previously allocated to a previous meeting and not used. There was some considerable time between the meetings and I don't think they had been wisely stored. I don't think the authorities were that worried, along with the manufacturer,  and it was thought it was unlikely to be repeated again.

If only he'd had British grandparents last year he could have come in on a 2 point average like Connor Bailey

It was a surprise to Diamonds fans last year George coming on a 4.00 ave instead of the 2 ave that was expected.

Intending to ride again for Poole in 1971, Gordon returned to Sydney at the end of his second season with the Pirates, ready to race in the Australian Speedway season.  Gordon was to be based at Liverpool Speedway, but in his first meeting he was involved in a crash when laying his bike down to avoid a fallen rival.  He was struck from behind by another rider and suffered severe head injuries.  Tragically, he never regained consciousness and died in hospital eight days later on 16th November 1970, a week before his 30th birthday.

Many thanks for that BL65.  I remembered he had laid his bike down and was hit, but I thought it was a road accident.

Sadly I don't recall any of those guys you mention, but I do remember most winters there used to be news of some tragedy on the racetracks Down Under in the local paper. Gordon Guasco and Geoff Curtis are ones I particularly recall from the early 70's.

Was Guasco's death not caused by a road accident ?

There is a lot of history about him and some lovely photos on the Newcastle Speedway History website.

He was a very loved and a complete rider, he did very well in a 60's Provincial League at BV I remember, and was a throughly good person to know. After being transferred to Newcastle Speedway from Stoke he moved to our area with his family and continued with his Painting and Decorating company. Always cheerful, he also looked as if he was upto something with his boyish cheeky look. Sadly after emigrating to OZ with his family he later deteriorated and for many years he was in a home. RIP Peter.

    39   Luke Harrison 15/06/2007
    40   Max James 05/07/2007
    41   Ashton Boughen 21/08/2007

Every single one of these riders should be given the opportunity to ride in the BRITISH development league, regardless of average, attitude, height, hair length, toe count whatever... They're young British riders and they deserve every single opportunity they get to race and show their worth.

41 riders CURRENTLY riding in the British leagues who are younger than Dan Bewley (I may have missed some, and yes you could argue some (JPB) aren't riding anymore, but he seems to come and go and you could say some riders don't deserve to be on this list, but that's how so many young lads have been frozen out in the past, they've been discounted and not given the opportunities they deserve).

39 (Minue Bewley and JPB)/7 = nearly 6 full teams of ONLY under Bewley age... Not to mention all the other NL riders who are aged above who deserve a spot in the NL just as much... It's not the lack of riders that is the problem IMO, it's the rules of the league. The NL needs to be strengthened, it's too far away from the CL level, numerous young riders throughout the years haven't been able to make such a big leap and have been frozen out and lost to the sport... Open your eyes!!

There's 5 riders born in 2007, 5 riders born in 2006, 11 riders born in 2004... All of these riders are still teenagers!! I would say British speedway hasn't looked this bright in decades?? Obviously there's way more Poles and quite possibly more Danes about, but I refuse to believe there's that many young Swedes or Aussies... I do look into that sort of thing because that's the kind of thing that (sadly) fascinates me... Who will be the big nation of the future...?

That's not even including some of the younger riders who are only a year or two out.

    William Cairns

    Billy Budd

    Ashton Vale

    Jody Scott

    Stene Pijper

    I'm sure there's more...

Who knows which 4-8 year olds are going about their day to day lives without realizing that they're the next big British speedway star... Time will tell.

As you can probably tell I'm at work and there's not a lot going on...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Edinburgh's main issue is funds and geography...?

Could add Katie Gordon who I think expressed a desire to move onto NDL.

Seem to recall that when Exeter were trying to return I think  Racecourse,  there was in the area a home for retired firefighters. Hired top legal help,  noise tests carried out, not  detected at all at said home ,

I think it was near the airport and still got a thumbs down.

Would that not rule out the need for noise tests?

Noise carries across lands/fields and may annoy, say farmers with animals. On the IOW I am informed that they are restricted to an 9.30pm end for racing for noise reasons, but there is a lady councellor who lives miles down the valley from the track who carefully monitors the noise after 9.30pm. A lot of promotions are monitored especially if there are people/organisations who can take advantage of the noise problems.

Need to support home grown talent but we had Nathan Ablitt last season and he scored more points for Belle Vue Colts last season than Milford and never won a race for Poole but with lower team building points limit he may win a race or two so could be a good signing or go for Nathan he has ridden all the tracks and would be a better bet going On league track experience.

Mulford  didn't start the season with BV as he was a late replacement for Parkinson Blackburn. Nathan started the season and missed the last meeting at Edinburgh.

All looks well on paper but once Mulford has a couple of 3 ride nights the mood in camp will change. Im with the Shanes weak link camp and once he drops to reserve its a poor trapping 6&7. That said if all riders click this team will dish out some hammerings both home and away.

Certainly doubtful that Mulford will stay as a reserve after the first set of averages with him being on a 2 start.

  13. Decent team especially with the HL trio who will score at all tracks. Normally that would mean a weak back end but not in this case. Hume is good value for his average, and it could be helpful his relationship with Danny K from Ipswich. Shanes should do OK especially on big tracks and the home track, whilst Edwards is a known quantity and is on a upward path. Don't understand the criticism about Mulford as, with me following the Colts last year, I know he has fast engines, rides big tracks well and after say a poor first ride on small tracks he will turn it around and finish well.

Decent side and will do well.

What did he do to destroy the track, dig it up with a JCB?

All the track fittings like the air fence, panels, start gate and electrics, machinery, all the pits have been removed by selling them off. The shale was being advertised for sale, but I don't know if it was sold off by the deadline that the owners gave Grant.

Any Diamonds fans out there inspired to do a Worky? I know land is a problem, but most fans have shovels in their sheds.

The shovels aren't the problem but, it's getting the land in the right place and at an acceptable price that will be acceptable to the authorities to run speedway on.

Any Newcastle fans who get the SPEEDWAY star if I was you I'd skip the track review ( in this week's issue) on the diamonds season unless you want a good laugh & that's not a dig at the riders BTW

I think a lot of it must be tongue in cheek. Apparently our number 1 got injured at the start of the season and hence our downfall. No mention of him getting a real injury almost 2 years ago in the GP qualifier at Glasgow. We signed him injured full stop. Agree about us missing Weathers, but no mention of how many team managers we went through, or the number of times Grant overturned Steve's decisions.

All gone now and the least missed person will be Grant.

Am sure know about the 'inner circle' Dave,,, maybe you were put in the 'ever decreasing circles' section? :t:

I was never in it when and after Grant bought the club. We never spoke and youth training was never discussed hence why we almost  lost the will to encourage the youngsters. He certainly left a legacy though.

Wonder if he got it in his head that he could just cruise through after his successful youth days. Even the best have to work harder than nearly everyone else.

I just hope he can fix it as he is truly a great rider like when he has been for GB.

ALL prospective Promoters have to go through the interview process and I'm pretty sure that both Steve and Dave went through the same process as everyone else who wanted to become a promoter, but, I'm sure were are well aware of this anyway.

Yes but I never knew or heard if they had or not.

I think it’s that fans want to see him do better as they think he could be at the next level if he really pushed himself. I’m a bit like that; I never get the impression he’s that bothered. He might be perfectly happy where he is which is the important thing but he has the talent to push on like Brennan and Flint IMO.

Despite the success Drew has had with U19 and U21, and some of world meetings with Brennan and Bewley, it really is a mystery that in league matches he performs so poorly. Might be the bike, but I tend to think like you that sometimes he can't really be bothered.
