    Zenon Plech RIP

So sad to hear this. Zenon was one of my first speedway heroes as a kid at Waterden Rd. A spectacular rider and such a nice guy. I still have the yellow NGK Spark plugs cap he handed to me through the bars of the Hackney pits..A treasured possession. RIP Zenon, you will always be Poland's number 1 in my eyes.
  3. Poor old Hughie broke his leg in his own testimonial meeting. How unlucky can you get!
  4. That's right. Thommo took over in 75, up til 81 when he joined Crayford, and Finn Thomsen was skipper for the last three years in the BL.

Yuk, It looks like a transformer. Oh for the days of the Winged Wheel.
  11. Yes that match was the catalyst. Len stormed into the dressing room ready to give the team the blasting of their lives, only to find that they were as upset as he was. As you say it was onwards and upwards from that point on. Losing at home to Cradley at the start of October ended our challenge unfortunately, but after finishing bottom for the previous two seasons it was still a great year.
  12. That 79 match was the only time I recall sections of the crowd turning on Len Silver. It was a depressing year all round, (losing Vic, finishing bottom.) Zenon's World Final performance being the only high point. Weirdly enough, although the Dons did the double over us that year we won the London Cup, and they won it the following year even though the Hawks did the double over them.

    Polish Extraleague 2020

A shame Gorzow couldn't get a 6-8 point lead. But winning on the night seemed unlikely early on. Great meeting and roll on Sunday!

    Unusual individual meetings

Five riders tied on 12 points in the 1981 Continental Final, although that was the amount that qualified for Wembley. They still had a series of run-offs which Egon Muller won from Ales Dryml, Edward Jancarz, Jiri Stancl and Zenon Plech.
  23. That was a terrible decision to exclude Tony in Sweden after Mark clearly knocked him off.(I would add that that I don't believe it was deliberate, as Mark wasn't that kind of rider. He just misjudged the pass.) The second incident with Stefan Danno I believe could have gone either way. Rickardsson did seem out of control when Sullivan passed him and Danno did keep to his line. Loram admitted he was a bit lucky that year, with Tony a little below his brilliant best.
  24. Exactly. I consider Barry Thomas to be the greatest rider ever Tony Rickardsson would be number 1 for me for two reasons. He was a whisker away from winning 5 consecutive world titles, (ok technically he finished 3rd in 2000, but does anybody honestly believe that he wouldn't have won the final if Mark Loram hadn't got the second place he needed in the consolation final?) Secondly for his astonishing performance in the 2005 series. 6 wins, one 2nd and a 3rd from 9 rounds. In league racing however, it's got to be Hans Nielsen. He was just a points machine!
