What the hell is hypocritical about not particularly liking his style of commentary whilst he was alive, and also being shocked, saddened and sending genuine condolences about the poor man’s death?

So if at any time in the past, you’ve commented on here that you’re not a fan of his commentary, you shouldn’t then come on here and send your condolences for the man’s sudden passing because it’s “hypocritical”, or as Diamondboy was implying, some are shedding crocodile tears because obviously they don’t care the man is dead because they’ve been on here criticising his style of commentating in the past?

What a pathetic and pretty crass point of view.

    100% spot on

Personally i think Newcastle have almost got the team building right on a budget (potentially Congreve on a 4.00 rather than a brit and more for final heat leader could be a blooper but....) built a team of home specialists and dependable riders. Starke and BWD might not be grand marquee signings but Brum would be delighted with either at the present time.

Really? For me Newcastle’s team looks awful.

  3. Reading a biography of the travel writer Norman Lewis, who raced Bugatti cars in the 1920s and 30s.

He also tried his hand at speedway at what was said to be the first meeting in England at High Beech, Epping Forest, in February 1928 before tracks became established at Harringay and White City.

The meeting was said not to have been advertised but it drew a crowd of 25,000 and 42 riders rode in 50 races.

Before his engine “exploded” Norman came last in every race he rode, bar one when “two of the four contestants crashed”. I assume he came second!

No idea how accurate this is!

You don't stop learning once you leave school... I've learnt many things since I left school

I agree, but that wasn’t the point I was making.

If my uncle hadn’t taken me to speedway when I was 13 I would never have gone and would never have heard of it until my thirties when I started buying the local paper, the Swindon Advertiser, which, unlike the national media, does very good speedway coverage.

I don't see much rock climbing or canoeing on TV or attracting crowds in excess of 1,000 every week. I have heard of the activities but not because I can do them at home or at training camps... I'm not sure what your point is?

My original reply was to Grachan’s post that said many people do not know what speedway is, so if they do not have any experience of it at school (unlike the possibility of canoeing etc) or cannot do it at home we’re reliant on publicity (very little in the British media) or older fans taken their children.

...what would have been good was a group of kids spending an afternoon/evening behind the scenes watching riders go about their business preparing their bikes and all that entails and watching the racing from the inside etc, But, of course, H&S wouldn't allow any of that now...imagine doing a work experience at the speedway?

Speedway clubs need to get into schools and arrange free, behind the scenes trips to meetings and promote have a go camps.

You say you can't do Speedway at home and then go on to compare it to a load of other activities you also can't do at home, the only real things you can do at home are ball sports or sports that don't require some sort of apparatus, like running.

Speedway is available in training camps and available to children.

    What I said was:

“One of the reasons being it’s not a sport that you can do at school or at home.  Practically every other one is, even if they’re restricted to summer camps or trips out to try canoeing or horse riding.  And while motor sports are generally not available to children they’re familiar with cars and motorbikes on the road.”

While speedway might be available in training camps it doesn’t make it onto the list of extra-curricular sports offered by schools in trips to outdoor activity centres that do canoeing, rock climbing and horse riding.

I would imagine that Speedway's popularity in Poland is similar to how it was in England in the 1970's.

Nationwide coverage on World of Sport, second most popular spectator sport in the country, front page of the Daily Mirror when Peter Collins won the World title.

But still you would find many people who had no idea what it was.

One of the reasons being it’s not a sport that you can do at school or at home.

Practically every other one is, even if they’re restricted to summer camps or trips out to try canoeing or horse riding.  And while motor sports are generally not available to children they’re familiar with cars and motorbikes on the road.

You might think that but BWitcher’s just PMed me to say I’m definitely not part of his clique!  :D

Is it just me or is this behaviour just beyond bizarre... I genuinely think this guy needs help. Does anybody on this forum actually know BWitcher in person? Because I think you need to carry out an intervention. I can't make up my mind whether he's a bully or mentally ill, maybe a bit of both. PLEASE! this guy needs your help.

BWitcher I plead with you, please go see a doctor... when the NHS reopens of course

Bwitcher is right about Covid and he has given compelling arguments, citing government figures.

Those who argue with him cite opinions, not facts, and consequently they are poor debaters and ultimately resort to insults rather than admit that they are wrong.

Someone who is always right and obsessed with stats......hmmm, who might that be?

It’s quite a leap to suggest that someone who presents and comments upon stats might be a paedophile and sex offender!

Steve mentioned Erik in the original post...

Thing is, there are MANY riders who rode for only one British club, but only had one or two seasons in the UK. They do fit the criteria, but cannot be classed as "servants". Riders like Kafel, Szczepanik, Olkiewicz, Zabik, Grubmuller, Marzotto etc. Even Brad Oxley...

Didn’t Zabik ride for Peterborough and Poole?

They could but wont.    Will 2m distancing be required come August. No one knows.  Leave decision as late as possible.

Government said they hoped schools can reopen June 1st.  Not 100% but a very hopeful reality.   Look what trouble that caused.

Trouble can be caused by springing things on people; that’s why I suggested more advanced notice and guidance that’s based on a measurable criteria.

Wanted to write that, not 24

Thing is how does it work. As far as I know here, you have to be out of the country 73 hours, before you have to go into quarantine. So a quick trip to another country would be ok

Haven’t seen that mentioned but Patel did say there would be some exceptions.

14 days quarantine required here from 8 June but of course that could well be lifted by July.

Personally I would like to see the government state now whether or not it intends for spectator events to recommence on 1 August.

That would give the BSPA a chance to plan for a three month season.
