The 1971 season file on Speedway Researcher lists the Halifax side as 1. Eric Boocock 2. Greg Kentwell 3. Dave Younghusband 4. Dave Durham 5. .Paul O'Neil 6. Malcolm Mackay 7. Terry Lee Heat 7 is noted as Boocock, Keen, O'Neil, Broadbank. However Halifax are not 6 behind at this point so Boocock could only have ridden as rider replacement. I suspect Dave Durham is at #8 but who was R/R in operation for? I also suspect Paul O'Neil actually rode at #4 with R/R at #5. Can anyone confirm the Halifax line-up?

The first time I saw Paul was in what was probably the biggest meeting of his career. He was meeting reserve for the 1984 N.L.R.C. at Wimbledon and he got a ride when Steve Lawson touched the tapes in heat 4. I seem to recall him arriving with his family in an old red Avenger with the bike strapped to the back.

The Southern Area League is causing me some issues in the for/against points department. California appear to be balanced but i've got odd points kicking with Brafield, Eastbourne, Ringwood and Rye House. California may be affected as those four shake themselves out. The ten completed Aldershot fixtures are also out of kilter. I'll come back to them in due course. Regarding 18/04 Ringwood v Brafield, the result is on the Brafield Speedway Researcher file but not on the Ringwood file. Though shown as a S.A.L. match it obviously wasn't - so was it just a challenge? Regarding Rigwood v Aldershot, I have a league fixture being raced on 20/06 result 50-33. Was this actually a challenge match? I have an Aldershot v Ringwood fixture in the Metropolitan League on 24/04, result 48-36. Did the Metro League become the S.A.L.? The 17/04 Aldershot v Eastbourne is also shown as the Metro League and this now seems to be a S.A.L. fixture. The good news is the for/against points totals are now balanced across the board.

Cheers. I hadn't thought to check the League Cup fixtures out, I had wrongly assumed it was just an unfinished competition with only 4 fixtures.

With regards to the league cup, were the 2 semi-finals one-legged affairs with Rye House defeating Southern Rovers 58-50 on 10th June and California defeating Eastbourne 61-46 on the 17th?

Where are CSI: Aldershot when you need them? I forgot to mention the Colin Pratt "error" (a word I'm reluctant to use because I fully appreciate the difficulty in ascertaining the facts from back in the day). All I can add at this point is the 59-23 result tallies with the S.A.L. table on the SGB website, which will do nicely for my purposes.

Good stuff, thank you. I spent a while double checking the Researcher files last night and discovered that in the 07/09 report Dave Slater is missing from the individual scorechart. He scores 2 (0, 0, 1, 1). It didn't resolve the extra point issue of course but perhaps it could be a lead.

The Oxford files on Speedway Researcher show no track records were set in 1972. However in 1973 George Hunter is credited with a TR of 65.4 in heat 2 of the Midland Riders QR on 10/05/1973. So it appears the track was changed between the 72 & 73 seasons. Ole Olsen lowered it to 65.2 in heat 6 of the Champions' £100 Trophy on 19th July.

As always I'm looking for help with the following: 04/04 Oxford - programme says Easter Cup Trophy won by Jack Young but I have a fixture entitled North v South with result 44-52. No mention of any event on this date in Speedway Researcher file. Can anyone shed light on this one? 26/05 Wimbledon - fixture described merely as 'Open'.
