Many thanks...you're a star! -
I recall the Boro Promoter (Ron Wilson?) booking Jack for Open Meetings because he knew he would put extra 'bums on seats!'
-
...characters in the sport. Used to get us all talking. They would often bring a dull meeting to life!

Nether saw Gote ride but apparently he was a "sheep in wolf's clothing".

The government’s plan: after “the Great Reset,” Speedway will NEVER return
steve roberts replied to 4thbender's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
In the "Good Old Days" there was always a full programme of meetings at each track encompassing League, Cup, Regional, Individual, Pairs, 4TT, Test matches, Second Halves which kept riders fully engaged without the need to look abroad for extra meetings...but of course over the years that scenario has been severly diluted due to both rider and supporter apathy. Chicken and egg scenario really. -

I agree with some of that however referring to the "day of the week" I can only cite my own example in that I used to travel across to Swindon quite regularly on the Saturday as I did Coventry (as a 'neutral') as it suited my working lifestyle but once they changed to mid-week I rarely went unless Oxford were there. -

Saturday tracks in particular. Got to the stage that tracks were no longer operating on the key night of the week. -

Great days! Due to our promotional tie-up with both Eastbourne and Peterborough we at Oxford got to see many talented riders...not only in the main body of the team but during the very competitive second halves. -
I'd heard this story also...
-
Yes during my three years following the "Rebels" used to enjoy the local derbies and visits to London. Not quite the same but Oxford's nearest National League rivals were Milton Keynes...another venue long gone.
-
Thanks! Works a treat!
-
What with both Oxford and Reading long departed and now the immanent closure (?) of Swindon sad times indeed. Great local derbies over the years.

I use Firefox...where do I access the adblocker please as they're driving me mad!
-
...Thanfully he didn't get away with it at Cowley during the middle seventies although time seems to have caught up at Oxford although I hope that I'm proved wrong with that observation.

Very impressive! -
Likewise...done!
-
...and wasn't he involved with the ill-conceived return of Bristol Speedway although plaudeted at the time? Planning permission was never granted if memory serves hence its closure after two short years?
-
I'm sure you are correct but Osbourne has history whist at Oxford until the SOS Committee stepped in!
-
...and keeping people in the dark as regards my intentions fobbing them off with all sorts or excuses.

I've attempted to drag the image across but apparently the file size is too large? -
Yes and he nearly sold us down the river then! Seem to recall he once took to the track in a race car and had a race with Gordon Kennett around Cowley or am I imagining that?

I'll try but not being a computer boffin I have experienced problems attempting to in the past! -
Do tell!

Of the "Rebels" starting line-up sadly gone are Garry Middleton (suicide), Svein Kassa (killed on track after leaving Oxford), Oyvind S.Berg, Ken McKinlay and Colin Gooddy who have all died. Only remaining two are Rick Timmo and Norman Strachan. Preben Rosenkilde was brought in as a replacement for Svein but didn't stay very long. Oxford then began to adopt a youth policy and gave rides to sister club's assets "Mad" Malcolm Ballard (an interview with him would prove interesting!) and Gordon Kennett. Simon's brother Julian Wigg had the occasional ride. Great days!

Trouble is I anticipated this when I started a simiar thread some five plus years ago when news was first leaked regarding the proposed development of the stadium. The whole situation has been poorly handled with constant contradictory information/press releases and the Swindon faithful sold down the river.
