  1. Hi Sid! I was there on both occasions and I do recall being at Swindon when the late Toni Kasper (as you refer) rode very well but can't remember the number of points he scored...great days!

Do you recall the occasion when Gordon Kennett scored a 21 point maximum and Kai Niemi scored 19 whilst riding for Eastbourne...and still finished on the losing side!

Yes i remember pretty well Kennett i really believed we should of signed him , at the Abbey he was one of the best visiting riders of the early eighties. We signed Bastable fair anough he did become BC but the rumours over those couple of years was we could of signed Kennett/Lee .Steve do you remember Collins/Morton scoring loads at the Abbey just like Kennett/Niemi i think Belle Vue had R/R for a overated false averaged Derek Richardson PC /Mort both took seven rides each i think.?

  2. Doesn't apply to me always liked Freddie as a rider, just think KK is a better at this moment in time.

For me i have crtitisised K.K but for me KK has always been a quality act,I remember seeing KK at a press day for the Robins he was quality a young lad then oozing class. Now Freddie is in front? and again i like F.L but KK could still and has the ability to get back in the series.

  3. That's quite the norm. I remember having a weekly gig at a club in Bournemouth. Did every Friday night and built it up from nothing, and I mean nothing, to having it packed out every Friday. The place was very popular. I had a 'mate' who used to look after the decks while I took a p break and got a drink. Then the club changed hands and closed for a month for a refit.

I popped in a week before it was due to open to see how things were coming along, to be told my services were no longer required. My "mate" had been in and told the new owner he could do the same as me for beer money. (I took half the door money). So I paid the 'mate' a visit and asked him what he was up to. The bloke didn't know where to put his face.

Needless to say he didn't have a clue and the night died on its feet very quickly. I got a call asking if I wanted it back and got great joy in telling the new owners where to shove it.

Any chance of BIGGING your self up anymore? cringeworthy😅

  4. When KK guested for Poole at Poole near the end of last season, who got the max? I'll give you a clue, it wasn't Holder..

Lisa even you know Chris was not happy last year the EL was his last priority. Now in there career Holder is a level above KK he always has been anyway hence why he is a former WC.KK away from home will he go missing now and again? can't wait to see what happens.

  5. I said one of, if not the best. I didn't say he was the best, though certainly he is around Poole.

Kings Lynn look very good and Wolves will give a decent account of themselves, but I think it will be between Poole and Rye House for the title.

I would be very confident of a revved up Holder and a FIT again Doyle beating KK out of a best of 10 races at Wimborne Rd both far more consistent KK can he prove me wrong?he has the talent to do so i enjoy watching him ride.

  6. For me Gustix it is nearly impossible to compile top 20 lists for those two era's. (ie) i have not seen nearly all of those riders so to pick by research only is a no/no.I will say though out of those two era's named i would be happy with the No 1s i have chosen 1929/48 1.VIC HUXLEY 1949/68 1.OVE FUNDIN.

  7. Just watched the 1981 Overseas Final from White City. Interesting to see the infamous clash between Penhall and Carter after all these years. Just before they both came down there was some elbowing down the straight as Carter squeezed thru' a gap between Penhalll and the fence. Entering the bend Carter appeared to close down Penhall rather hard which, in my opinion, compromised Penhall and a coming together was the end result. Who was to blame? Difficult one to call (Penhall was excluding) but obviously a prelude of what was to come.

Actually Penhall was attacking bends ruthlessly and made things very difficult for Dave Jessup in an attempt to move him over but Jessup held his nerve and went on to win the meeting...great stuff and in a superb stadium.

Penhall was a ruthless rider don't be fooled by his looks in 82 he was very lucky to get away with that incident. For me i don't blame either rider the rule in place that someone has to go (excluded) is to blame. How the sport was robbed that year of a great climax and IF Carter had become WC would his life have panned out differently.? who knows.By the way if he had become WC he would of been a terrific WC, unlike Penhall who then just quit and from then on the sport has been on a wet slippery slope.

  8. As a dad. I think that even 'Briggo' admits that he may well have been to pushy in Tony's career.

Can't be easy being the son of a multi World Champion.

I can remember that bollocking that he gave Tony at the Abbey. But i can always remember Barry saying Tony had more ability than him at the same age huge praise eh Briggo senior is certainly in my top 7 of all time.

  9.

I was there. Cracking meeting............but nowhere near as good as Scunny v Edinburgh. That was just amazing.

God i envy you then Halifax 😅i will make the effort and try to get to Scunny a few times this year certainly for the Ipswich fixture.

  10. About the size of a tree trunk.

I lived over an hour from Poole. Doesn't stop me going. I have a family. Doesn't stop me going. Speedway is hardly expensive, is it?

If someone can't afford to go to speedway every week, they are clearly in the wrong job. Time to go back to education and train for a proper job or skill. Being Arthur Daley but working for someone is no proper job.

What a pathetic and arrogant post😬.

  11. I can make Sundays but I prefer Friday nights, too (although Sundays means I can do Belle Vue as well, rather than having to choose).

Thing is Rob Godfrey made it clear why he switched and I couldn't argue with his reasoning.

One thing is certainly true : the quality of the speedway at the best racing track in the country didn't deteriorate one iota.

Went only once last year to Scunny v Somerset and that was the best nights racing i saw all year.

  12. Just wondered how far Tony Briggs could of gone in speedway if it was not for his serious neck injuries.I remember seeing him first at Reading in the Sarjeants tools two legged affair with Swindon he looked a prospect a real tough act to follow in Briggo seniors footsteps. One thing i do remember was he was a very poor gater and often had to scrap for points from the back.I remember one race in particular a second half race at the Abbey with Holloway,Robert Craven,Tony in it Holloway won it Tony came back into the pits and got one hell of a roasting from his dad.I wondered what other forum members opinion was of Tony a hard one really but i have a hunch he would of turned out as a very good rider.

  13. I do remember Lofqvist being named in one or two Wimbledon programmes, but he never turned up.And i do seem to remember Bast riding after one meeting.Think it was also suggested that Ivan was coming back to Plough Lane and it was almost a done deal, before he went to Exeter

Lofqvist i think then went and signed for Hackney i was a real fan of Christer a really exciting rider class.Bast in 77 came over for White City and i remember him moaning that he did not get the practice laps that he required to be competetive at White City. Who would of predicted in 77 that Penhall would end up being a double WC in the future.!!???

  14. The issue with you Gav for several Poole fans is that you used the word 'struggling' when describing particularly Brady's efforts.

IMO 'struggling' is very different to being 'below par'. 'Struggling' is not reflected in Brady reaching 2 B finals.

In any case while you lot were all arguing last night I'm pleased to report another 'sold out' Game Show quiz night at Poole Stadium Champs Bar, with some insightful comments from 'Phone a Friend' - Aussie Team Manager Mark Lemon - who when asked about Jack and Brady's performances, reminded people that they are still only 20 years old!! He expects Jack to take the Premiership 'by storm' and Brady to just about hold his own on tracks that he has now ridden a couple of times at least - being more of a 'slow-burner'!!

Also another good interview with Kyle Newman, who said he is well on course with his mechanical and physical fitness and looking forward to the season at both clubs.

He referred to Ipswich as a well-run Championship club - a bit like a 'smaller Poole'!! (I had to smile when he said that!) lol

Strange comment Kurtz really did well in his first couple of PL seasons alot better than Jack. With Holder i suppose the problems Plymouth had were endless so maybe that had something to do with his average as i expected alot better.Holder i think is a real rider will tear it up at Peterborough and do well in his maiden senior campaign Kurtz also will do well a talented lad.

  15. Was it rumoured that he about to sign for 'The Dons' prior to the start of the 1975 season but it fell thru' for whatever the reason?

Wimbledon did have some bad luck were they not suppose to of signed Christer Lofqvist once ? and later missed out on Bast i actually think Bast might of done a few laps at Plough Lane.??
