Certainly did Sid! I remember the time in 1977 when he was about to walk out of the Knock Out Cup Semi-Final meeting due to constant engine problems but was sweet talked back into riding by Martin Rogers on the centre green right in front of us...as these things do if Michael had carried out his threat the "Rebels" may well have taken the double that year?

Also saw his bow riding for England against the Rest of the World (yes England were that good back then!) at Wood Lane.

I first see Michael ride at the Abbey in the September 1975 he scored 10 points .Not the prettiest to watch but you knew he had class Gollob/ Ward are the only other two riders who rival him for natural talent  in my book. And to this day Craven, Collins, Lee, Woffinden are my top four English riders of alltime.

I saw a 14 year old Michael give interval demonstration rides against an equally young Colin Richardson at Cowley...easy to say who went on to be the better rider although Colin did show plenty of potential for one so young.

You must of seen Mike plenty of times at White City over the years Steve? i was fortunate anough to see him ride quite often.Have acquired quite alot of the 1983 footage of Michael and it still gives me great pleasure in seeing him reinvent himself after the 81/82 disaster seasons( a great 81 Longtrack victory though).

    Hi Sid,

Right about Lee that year. He picked himself up and gave a very good account of himself at Norden (I was there)...shame it all went wrong agian the following season. He should have been a major force for most of the eighties giving the Danes a run for their money but alas his "demons" got the better of him.

The meetings that stick out for me were his paid 17 against Denmark 1983 at Hackney he was very good at the wick. Also beating Gundersen  at Dudley numerous times ( including golden helmet  ( and Carter 4.0 helmet) 1983.Just imagine a fit Carter and motiavated Lee they would of been competetive against Hans/ Erik.Having said that Hans improved when he moved to Cowley really frustrated how Lee,s career ended we all know just how good he was.In a way Steve we were both lucky we both see quite a bit of a young Michael and have good and bad memories  that still remain being stopped to ride in the 1984 British Final when cleared of the charges finished his career.

  4. Can anyone give me the heat details of Poole v Belle Vue ( h) and Belle Vue (a) and Halifax ( a) much appreciated can’t be bothered to dig out my speedway stars.Lee  that year was very good beat Hans/Erik easily at times also Kenny was sublime too.

Gaters paradise good win for us good crowd just poor speedway .

For me Ray the entertainment element always comes before the result it should do anyway.A great result for the Pirates against a confident Glasgow side really nice to see young Nathan score a couple of points in which has been a tough season for him.He will learn quite alot from this year he must be tough mentally and i hope he sticks at it.For Glasgow for me Basso and Brennan are key to there season you don’t always know what you are going to get from them ten points between them not really good anough for there ability.

Danyon has surprised me this season, thought initially it was a strange signing, but he is having a good season and is a shrewd signing.

He has done really well ; acquitted himself well in the Prem to,Just needs to be lucky in injury the progress is there the thing is his home form has been good away it has been excellent,

  7. What really struck home to me  last night was Danyon Hume alot of Brum supporters on this forum loved him,all of them I respect. He had a few injuries along the way but with  Bacon/ Flint was very good for the Brum  before Covid great lad exciting to watch .He got frozen out really because of his average he has really come on  improved just thinking Brum would be a track he goes back to in the future ?( if open) we will see.

  8. I don’t know how Poole fans feel but the team does seem to be a unbalanced unit. They were very unfortunate on losing the very promising Basso but for me there biggest mistake was not retaining Hume. Now Glasgow are reaping the benefit of Hume’s year at Poole  going back to the team things could still turn they have some very good riders maybe a spark from something will change things.

Having the 2nd Division too strong also stifles growth...

At least 3 of the septets per team should be NDL HL level, with one, at most, Div 1 HL level...

You could be right but the old National league years ago had riders who could of been full time BL performers for a prolonged period..( ie) Perks, Sansom,Sampson, Jackson, Owen x2 ) Hunter,Sheilds,  as examples .For me now the leagues are reasonably close the Prem for me is a poor product something needs to change.

Typical BSF negativity. Great 2022 season so far, with most clubs doing good business.  Thank goodness those on here are not reflective of those enjoying their speedway on the terraces.

Surely Sam you can understand why there is negativity as most people know the sport could be in better shape the potential is there.Great to see that clubs are moving on since Covid great really terrific news. But you could see in the Belle Vue v Ipswich fixture crowd wise not everything is rosy in the garden. And as being a Swindon fan why would i not be downhearted as all us fans have been led a merry dance.

How many of us will reach our death beds regretting our wasted hours at the speedway watching mostly track grading?

I honestly think back now and feel it was only out of habit I attended for so long. Still love the sport, and its history, but can't be bothered with the modern stuff. It ain't the speedway I fell for.

Most on here saying they've stopped attending and don't miss it, are merely echoing what I've been saying for yonks. I was only warning back then the sport needed a big shakeup. Look what level it's down to now.

In Britain the thing that has always stuck in my mind Moxey was John Berry..He certainly was not everyone’s cup of tea but he could of revamped speedway in the Uk someone independent   but that avenue was lost.

Ditto here, I thought I'd miss speedway if I stopped going. The season that broke me was 2010 since then I've gone from almost ever present at home meetings to one maybe two meetings a year.

A shame Cowboy ,i feel ashamed but it does not mean the world to me like it used to.Still see good meetings great and think the buzz will comeback it does for a period but speedway in the Uk  is so frustrating.

It's things like this that make me realise I don't  miss Speedway meetings now.

I feel exactly the same, if you had told me five years ago i would not miss  speedway i would never of believed you.Have only been to a handful of meetings since Covid and with the Swindon fiasco coming to a conclusion cannot see myself going on a regular basis again.I might go to the Poole v Glasgow fixture and get along to Oxford and that is it.I  still do my speedway memorabilia and keep in touch with the sport daily but the sport has stagnated and surprisingly i do not miss it anymore.I did enjoy the Belle Vue v Ipswich fixture and it did keep me interested so surprised Gemini that you don’t visit Leicester speedway anymore anyway hope you are keeping well.

On Thursday Nielsen won heat 2, beating Kemp & Flint.

He then had two last places, losing to Becker / Douglas & Masters / Worrall.

Never raced a reserve again after heat 2. How can anyone expect him to score more than the 3 points he did?

Bates the promoter what a  silly quote he said  we expected  more from Stefan he had done ok.Allen is a very good rider but he has a bit to prove in my book.

Boring meeting  only kept interesting by the close score line .

If that's the best track in the country.. Ipswich must be 2nd. Another track where going the shortest way round wins the race.

Did you watch the same meeting as the rest of us?  some decent racing most of the races had something happening.Zagar superb Kurtz decent  and King showing improved form Doyle on it also thought Hume rode very well for a measly 2 point return.

  16. My favourite programmes are the six BLRC meetings that Briggo won. And a Swindon v Sheffield meeting  in 1976 where Tommy Jansson rode in the second half and rode Crash Ashby in the Golden Helmet.Tommy won at Wimbledon , Crash won the Swindon encounter Tommy then won the decider at Cradley.

Gary Petersen,RIP  being one other sommelier ? as you were a regular at Wolves. They all stick in my mind ;and always think about them all at one time or another .Martin. Hewlett ( bless him ) RIP  a young lad making his way in the sport was the only one i witnesssed.

I think what is fair is that whoever is performing in the race jacket should keep it as such

Based on Danyons last meeting then I would keep him in the side

The only time I would change it back would be if he loses form, or perhaps they are at a track where traditionally Anders goes better

I think Anders is the better long term prospect though

I have followed Anders since his mini track days and  have always liked him but not being at Swindon has halted his progress in my opinion also that knee injury came at the wrong time.I feel at this present time  Danyon is more aggressive, and more of a racer and i think he is capable of beating alot of the second  strings in the Premiership.

Anders is a strange one, still young so benefit of the doubt, he didn't opt in for the rising star berth last season and there was no doubt he starting superbly, then that Injury at Kings Lynn put him back, believe it was a knee but it was said in the off season he was coming back this season fit, so thinking the recovery period has passed you would probably expect him to be one of the better rising star riders based on what he achieved when fit at the start of last season

Seems to have lost his way a little bit, I think really for him to reach a top level someone needs to be really aggressive with him and change this rigid riding style, I think at times its a hinderance, but saying that its the same style that got him banging in points at the start of last season

Really hope he can turn his fortunes around

Would you keep Danyon in Falcon 1983 for a prolonged period ? or do you bring back Anders.A tough call are you loyal or do you say Danyon is a squad member and has  seized his chance.Personally for me if Danyon can stay injury free for his home scoring alone should stay in the side.

Kelvin does a fine job imo, but Ermolenko is a complete embarrassment...

My main point Panther is it is only weeks since Nigel passed yet people still snipe.Look i was never a fan of the modern day presentation yet all  of those named  i have total respect for all of them. With Sam we can see what a decent man he is and he is respected by everyone who is important in speedway.
