    Oxford Spires 2024

Can I point out that our closing had absolutely nothing to do whatsoever with crowd levels. It had everything to do with 1 of the 2 promoters that also ran another club. He did not pay anyone, riders (in fact a couple of mates who were in the team were going to refuse to race as they hadn’t received any payment for the whole time they were racing and were told they would be withholding their services and face a 28 day ban) medics, rent (speedway and the gym set-up) and rent on a house. There were massive debts left behind from memory to continue at the stadium (under the guy that was trying to get Exeter a new place) they wanted a 5 figure payment before they would talk about running speedway. That is the truth but all the gate money was taken. I am sure that this also hindered us getting back into the stadium sooner. If they did have falling crowds some of that is the way fans were treated and things that were said.

    Playoff Final

I was there and unfortunately had a birdseye clear and unobstructed view of Max’s accident and whilst there were elbows at the start, the way his bike took off/launched itself looked more like a throttle issue. No disrespect meant to Max by this comment but he hasn’t had the best of results at Oxford this year but he’s still learning. More importantly he was literally just a passenger when the bike took off and I don’t think even the GP boys would have been able to do anything either get off or stop the inevitable outcome, it was that quick.

    Playoff Final

We have quite a few medics at the track (two ambulances and a rapid response car) so there would have been cover. However I’m unsure (even if the rain hadn’t started to fall whilst Max was being treated) whether the riders would have wanted to continue considering the horrific injuries Max was first feared to have had, had this been the case I am sure none of the fans would have objected we could see it was serious, and most of these are young guys that may not have been in this situation before. Sadly everybody is fixated on the track and conditions, Max’s accident had nothing to do with the track, from the start there were elbows out but at the entrance to 1st bend his bike took off (it looked like his throttle stuck open) and went straight into the fence and he couldn’t get away from the bike, it was a freak accident that nobody could have predicted or stopped from happening.

    Playoff Final

As an Oxford fan to be quite honest I didn’t give a monkeys about the league title after Max’s crash. It almost looked like the throttle stuck open and was horrifying, the bike hitting him the way it did probably made things worse. But it was obvious it was serious. Dan Thompson stayed with Max the whole time he was on track and helped carry the stretcher to the ambulance, considering his age that was an incredible thing to do especially with Max suffering from the injuries he has.

    Leicester vs Oxford - NDL - 23/09

I hope Max Perry is ok the accident he has just had was horrific. He was on the track for 1/2 hour and in an ambulance in the pits for 10-15mins being treated and is still there. All medics are with him. From the gates I don’t know if Max clipped a bike or throttle jammed he went in full pelt to the air fence which lifted on impact. Unfortunately he couldn’t clear the bike and it looked like it came down onto him. Credit to Dan Thompson who stayed with him the whole time even helping carry the stretcher. Update: 21:25 ambulance has now left the stadium.
  6. He hasn’t posted anything on his instagram or Facebook that I can see. Think he is now in Oz and seems to be plugging his music. At least Freddie acknowledged and did a video for the fans.
  7. He has posted a video on Facebook.
  8. I think one of my favourite memories of Monmore was when we scored about 29 points, Vanessa Purchase came out to us as we were on chauffeur duties, apologised and told us they would be late coming back to the vans. She went and found out where the control for the hot water was in the showers and turned it off making it extremely cold, she then stormed into the showers and gave them a right rollicking.
  9. Hope the riders and fans are ready, there’ll be no hot water or celebratory fireworks at Wimborne Road tonight!!! Go Glasgow.
  10. He was there not shouting at the riders, either that or God help us he’s been cloned. He was shown on camera andTatum mentioned that the CEO of British speedway was there as well.
  11. Does anyone know how Doyle is, I’ve seen on a few different Facebook pages that he was seen getting into and being taken away from Foxhall in an ambulance. It’s also rumoured he may not be able to take part in Thursdays meeting. He’s had a few nasty accidents recently so hope it’s just precautionary.
  12. I don’t use twitter/X so wouldn’t know what he has said on that. All I was saying was that it depends which contract he signed first and as GP dates are released nearly a year in advance he was possibly already signed up for this meeting. It’s no different to a Polish meeting taking president over a re-scheduled match. There has been mention on other forums that Tarasenko hadn’t flown in today for the meeting, and others claiming it was dry in Glasgow I have no idea what is correct but all adds fuel to the fire.
  13. You are questioning his integrity when you are saying he should give up the tv contract (that he would have locked in way before this fixture existed), saying nobody would miss him from tv coverage that’s your opinion which you are entitled to, I actually like Scott presenting and think he’s one of the best rider presenters there is. The world team cup presentation was poorer without him. You have to remember that Discovery are a multi-billion dollar company, they do contracts for years at a time so say he signed a contract for 3 years, but is on a season by season racing contract, do you expect him to breach his contract. British speedway is going to the dogs and that’s gutting.
  14. Are you serious?! Please don’t question Scott’s integrity he has been nothing but professional at Oxford this year. He has ridden through some devastating times for him and his family, when many others would have pulled out of meetings. How do you know when he signed his contract with Discovery may be that was first. I’m Oxford through and through and yes I would love for Scott to be able to ride but if he is contracted to be with Discovery I understand that as the GP dates have been fixed for 12 months at least.

    Emil Sayfutdinov

We first saw Emil race in the under 21 final in Pardubice, we said then that he was one to watch didn’t gate but my god did he race and win. Role on to the GP’s we have stayed in a few hotels that riders use, Emil (and his crew) have always been friendly as have his team with or without him present, they made time to talk to everyone even at breakfast, a true gent, unlike some other riders. He is someone I think a lot of “professional riders” could learn from, he understands and respects the fans regardless of club or nationality, he makes time for fans wherever he goes. You don’t hear of him swearing, ignoring people or brattish behaviour. I am sure he has his moments but I have not seen that. I have and always will support Emil, shame he took time out of the GP’s otherwise I think he would been world champ multiple times.
  16. I have heard that Freddie did not want him excluded and spoke up for him as did other riders. Freddie would not want to win a title like this (providing he does well tonight)

    Redcar 2023

I know some years ago Charles would not have met the criteria for an application to our Ben fund. It used to be that you could make a claim only if your accident was in the UK and the promoter had to apply on the riders behalf. If I remember rightly Darcy Ward wasn’t entitled to anything when he came back to the UK from Poland and there were a few that weren’t happy with this. I assume this is still the case if you think about it they have to draw the line somewhere. I don’t mean this to be unkind but these guys ride in (Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Czech, Finland, France etc) the Ben fund can’t cover everyone everywhere. So I think this is why it was stipulated that it was for accidents in the UK. I am not aware of a Polish equivalent to our Ben fund (but there maybe one), unfortunately this is why they have to take out insurance to race and I see someone has started a go fund me page for Charles.
  18. “Yet to see this young lad ride but there’s been lots of trumpeting of his name. So I looked up his scoring and there’s nothing there to see. Seems many are getting carried away and for a young lad to have his own thread for scoring zero is ridiculous. Let him learn at his own pace and if he’s any good in a few seasons then that’s great. But at the moment he seems out of his depth in the Championship, never mind the PL.” Guess you have changed your mind now then!
  19. I was just using them as an example. But if you look at when they report wrong and they have made some massive howlers. A smaller company can’t take the risk of getting it wrong.

    Ashton Boughen

He has full support at Oxford, Peter, Jamie obviously have confidence in him and Peter and Lewis have helped him learn the craft of speedway also Jamie is a champion of the British youth system. I understand there was a lot of interest in signing him but he wanted to be at Oxford with the people and set up around him he already has. He can learn a lot from Sam, Scott, Lewis and the boys, who genuinely want to see the younger lads making it in the sport. Hence me saying elsewhere that if you have the chance to ride with the top boys the experience is worth it. He has a good attitude, not putting too much pressure on himself and getting the most out of racing that he can. He is a young kid, last night he worked for every point and in at least one heat him dropping points wasn’t entirely his fault. For some people to judge a rider on scores alone does not tell you what a rider is like ion track for example it doesn’t reflect the riders ability to block opposition, team ride, attitude on track etc.

    Drugs - Just Say No!

That doesn’t lower your inhibition’s though, one of the reasons for using cocaine for example (and going on what other rider have said) is that it gives you a false sense of confidence which means you go for gaps that any other rider would not dream of taking.

    Drugs - Just Say No!

Happened at Oxford last year where a rider arrived with less than 20 mins, yet had been in Oxford and at a pub in the afternoon and couldn’t say they didn’t know where the stadium was as they rode here.
  23. I think is should be obvious, yes you are aware what is happening but if for any reason you got a name wrong or an implication is made that turn out to be false or an error you would leave yourselves wide open to being sued. Therefore you guys can’t say anything until you receive an official communication of what has happened. For example the BBC has to have a story they are covering confirmed from at least two sources before they can report something.
  24. At the end of the day it is down to the rider to know what they are taking legally/illegally they are meant to be professional. I assume when taking out a license there is a box or something that says you agree/are aware of drugs policy. If you don’t know ask, Alexa, Google, your team management a Dr. There really isn’t an excuse, if it is pain killers because of an injury should you be riding in the first place? I have seen comments from riders past and present that this is the tip of the iceberg and they could name plenty of other riders using banned substances, so how many officials are also aware of this but turn a blind eye? Yet again though it is the paying fans be it at the track or BSN that are ripped off by these situations, they have paid to view a meeting with a minimum of 12 riders, but have been left with this situation. Would it not be obvious that a rider coming back from a ban for failing a drug test previously, would be “randomly” tested more frequently?!

    Drugs - Just Say No!

Won’t happen it has been going on for at least 30 years that I have known of, excuses including pot laced fruit cake, spiked drinks, cough medication and still is now, if you are lucky they admit when they have been found to have taken harder substances. The argument for drinking someone brought it for me and I didn’t know what was in it, I only had a pint, I used a hand sanitiser etc. When Darcy was done for drinking at the Latvian gp, another rider was interviewed and said it’s all well and good testing for alcohol but drug tests needed to be conducted more regularly and how many years ago was that? If it had been the year before I could have told you several names that were up ‘til 2am doing shots in Latvia, that would have been banned. You are very wrong in thinking it is the more elite riders that are the only ones to gain. Think about it the more you can score (points that is) the more money you get, you may not do it every meeting trying not to draw to much attention but how many riders have you seen over the years who have been riding badly then have a maximum the next week. I am not saying this is the case for all riders in that situation but you are left with a question over it. I have seen posts on other sites from ex-riders saying it’s the tip of the iceberg and they could tell you the names of many riders that are taking drugs. Let’s face it, it’s that well known amongst the riders then in some cases officials at the club also see what is happening. What I don’t understand is if it’s that well known who is abusing the rules why is nobody informing on them? What they are doing endangers everyone on the centre (medics, track staff, riders, photographers etc.). The question that you will never know the answer to is how many accidents have been caused as a result of someone who has taken something on the banned list alcohol/drugs? How many careers have been ended or life changing injuries caused because of this? Also why do the drug test just at the start of the meeting, if you are going to try and beat the system as some do, some riders/mechanics get warning calls that there are tests being done at that meeting (then suddenly you hear the van has broken down, food poisoning, traffic jams etc.). Would you turn up under the influence or once you know the test has been done or is not happening what’s to stop you from taking something then, some drugs are absorbed into the system quicker than others. The bottom line is that all riders know the license conditions and what drugs (legal or otherwise, including alcohol) they can or cannot take and even if they don’t it is their responsibility to make sure they comply with the regulations.
