Well said.  Yep very sad news to wake up to today.  I got to know him via the old email forums donkeys years ago and in later years when i moved up to london spent a good few nights out and about.  He was still a big fan even many years after his involvement ended and was a lovely chap.  Will be missed by many.

Back to lurk mode for me now but just wanted to comment. Cheers.

Ah, the email mailing list - I remember it well , and yes that was where i initially met him, and then with his sponsorship of both Wiggy & Chris before he came to Lynn. The outpouring of grief on his Facebook page is very strong, and its obvious from there just how highly respected he was in his chosen profession.

  2. He was a top bloke. I loved chatting to him at meetings - he always had time to speak. I have been to a couple of his photography exhibitions too in London, and he was a very talented photographer, and we did keep in contact on social media. Who can forget his planning and presentation of the opening night for the when he & Waggy took over.......

    RIP Brian

Attached is one of his photos that he was commissioned to take recording the rebuilding of St Pancras station by LCR ( London & Continental Railways)

  3. It is being widely reported on Social Media that ex-promoter. and all round speedway fan, Brian Griffin has passed away in his sleep. As a promoter, Brian was (in my opinion) ahead of his time and I'm confident in saying that the opening night at King's Lynn when Brian & Waggy were the promoters was probably the most lavish & spectacular presentation you will ever see of any speedway meeting. Brian used his connections within the film & TV business to put on a show that was considered by many to be outrageous, but spectacular it was. I was travelling from the South that night having been working in London and the 'Movie Premiere Searchlights' could be seen for miles away. Nobody within a 10 mile radius of Saddlebow Road that night would not have known it was the beginning of a new era for King's Lynn speedway, albeit as the Knights, rather than the stars. It has to be said that several riders, notably Simon Wigg & Chris Louis benefitted from Brian's friendship.

Not everybodies cup of tea, but I for one think that speedway could do with more Brian Griffin's (and indeed Grahan Drury - its been a bad week for Speedway promotion).

RIP Brian, thank you for the memories

Currently Buster has nothing to sell and any potential buyer has nothing to buy, that has been the case all season, even the air fence needs replacing after this season. If a 2-3 year lease could be negotiated then that puts things into a different perspective, Buster could sell (or carry on), a buyer could buy and 2-3 years could be spent securing land and building a new track and facilities which according to the local plan the developers will have to pay for. With the best will in the world, nothing will be built where the track is for a long time. If AEPG would agree to 2-3 years it would get them much positive PR and everyone would (sort of) be happy (except the local residents, of which I am one).  At the moment AEPG are getting pelters and it is only going to get a lot lot worse for them. AEPG say they aren’t bothered by the local outrage, but they definitely are, they are not liking the non stop criticism and watching objections filed every day with not one single positive comment. They have misjudged Peterborough people big time and it’s moving towards a watershed moment for Peterborough City Council.

I think you are right Mick. Air fences don’t come cheap I suspect, and then of course there is the BSPL bond that would need to be paid. Even if Buster was to sell ‘Peterborough Speedway’ for a pittance, the startup costs for any purchaser would run into many, many Thousands I would expect, without even considering signing riders

  5. I have submitted my objections to both applications, but it set me thinking. Should we in some way be getting other showground users involved too ? The obvious one is Truckfest as its their flagship event, and I believe one of the premier events world wide of this type. Also the camping & caravan show..... I'm sure there are many others too. If we could show its truly multi purpose then there would be more objections and a greater chance of success ?

you need to look for a video of a challenge match between Newcastle and a Swedish team getingarner, something like that, back in the early eighties, started snowing halfway thru the meeting by the end of the night it was like a blizzard, they still rode and i had travelled up for a second half ride, from Manchester, and they still let us go out.:D, i would of been fuming if they didn't.

That will be Getingarna, from Stockholm. That tour marked the first appearance of Jimmy Nilsen & Per Jonson in the UK if I recall. I was in the pits for that meeting as mechanic for rickard Hellsen and it is one of the meetings taht sticks in my memory. I remember them using rakes to clear snow right by the edge of the fence so that the riders could see where the fence was as the rest of the track was white with snow. My other memory was Tommy Nilsson with his twin cam Jawa screaming away. The journey back to Norfolk was quite interesting too with heavy snow on the way back

  7. In the Swedish league in the mid to late 90's, the visiting team were given an opportunity for a short practice (I seem to remember 10 minutes but I may be wrong) at Elite League meetings, I'm not sure about the allsvenskan though. This used tto happen an hour before the scheduled start and it seemed to work quite well.

My Dad who's 81 is now facing this dilemma as he wants that streaming package for the season, has a proper old TV and also bog standard broadband, ive told him he needs to upgrade to a smart TV and probably also get super fast fibre if he wants to watch it, least he has Sky Q so can access Discovery Plus tho, mind you saying that im not even sure Discovery Plus will work well without buffering if he doesn't upgrade to super fast fibre coz his speeds with standard broadband are woeful.

Unfortunatley Sky Q's Discovery + doesnt imclude Sports, so that wont work for him

  9. I fear we may be in for a tough time trying to watch our sport this coming year. Its obvious that there are significant issues with Discovery + as a service, with very mixed results on their output and support. Its noticeable, as mentioned previously, that there is no sports offering on the SKY version of the Discovery + app and it doesn't appear to be coming to that any time soon, if at all. I was quite interested to read the reviews of the Discovery + service on Trustpilot that were relating to the Australian Open tennis that has recently been on, and the issues that were encountered in terms of lack of broadcast, lack of graphics and lack of commentary. I cannot believe that Discovery + won't take some of that criticism on board given that their current rating on trust pilot is 86% Bad, and hopefully that may help us in the not too distant future. (these reviews are for the UK service - not sure if its the same elsewhere)

  10. Some of my friends in Sweden have recently been to a moto cross meeting that was entirely on electric bikes, and were very impressed. I specifically asked them about the lack of noise and they said that initially you missed it, but as the race developed it became less noticeable. The racing was equally as good as it was with IC bikes, and they feel that particular sport has a strong future. Could it be the same for speedway ?
