  1. I appreciate that the answer to this question will differ from rider to rider and club to club but in general terms besides being paid to start a race and then the appropriate points money what other items of cost are met by the club?

    I am thinking of:

    • Travel expenses?
    • Tyres?
    • Fuel?
    • Bikes?
    • Engines?
    • Race suits?

and in terms of sponsorship, other than straight cash, what are the most beneficial items a rider could be sponsored with?

Tyres, fuel(methanol) & oil are usually paid by the club, although it's not a given.

The club will always (to the best of my knowledge) make a contribution towards fuel (travel) expenses, although the amount per mile does vary.

Things like kevlars vary a lot from club to club, and is often one of the stumbling blocks in contract discussions.

A van is often provided for the year if the club has a relevant sponsor - Belle Vue, Ipswich, etc.

Clubs sometimes provide money for a race day mechanic - this is often a cash payment.

Some clubs have full time mechanics, too.

In terms of general machinery, it is paid by the rider 99% of the time. Some international riders may be a different kettle of fish. Wealthier clubs (like Glasgow) have been known to provide riders with various necessary machinery.

The clubs often provide accomodation + workshop to Australian (and other foreign riders too).

Clearly stuff like engines or a bike (little bit harder as it has many different components) are the most beneficial for the rider, but there's a whole host of items that can be sponsored if someone prefers to pay for a specific item (rather than cash). Clutch plates, helmet, fork, frame, diamond, mudguards, numerous other bike parts, tear-offs, the list goes on.

  2.

    It's not just Simon's testimonial

It's the way meetings have been run since the return to the top league.

There certainly is far more faffing about than the PL days, it can only really be put down to trying to get the tills dinging through food and drink.

There have been times where intervals have dragged on for near 30mins when in truth no interval is required at all.

The race day schedule should be the same for all and fits in with TV too and be strictly adhered to by the clerk of the course and referee:

    From Ht1 2mins to Ht2 2mins - 5mins

    Ht2 - 5mins

    Ht3 - 5mins

    Ht4 - 5mins

    Break - 5mins (adverts - track grade)

    Ht5 - 5mins

    Ht6 - 5mins

    Ht7 - 5mins

    Ht8 - 5mins

    Break - 5mins (adverts - track grade)

    Ht9 - 5mins

    Ht10 - 5mins

    Ht11 - 5mins

    Ht12 - 5mins

    Break - 5mins (adverts - track grade)

    Ht13 - 5mins

    Ht14 - 5mins

    Ht15 - 10mins (Inc advert, heat line-up, track grade)

    = 1hr35mins

Anyone could accept that, the obvious further delays come with the sport but when things go smoothly there's no need for meetings to go beyond that time scale.

Whilst, on paper, this is fine for the most part (proper interval is missing though). Some tracks even have a similar schedule (with exact times) in the pits, but they very, very rarely keep to them.

Crashes, exclusions, James Sarjeant, track issues, SKY BT, injuries, R/R (2 on a trot), electrical/tape issues, and so on nearly always have an impact on the timings over the course of a meeting.

  3. You were right hs he scored F,2,2,2,0.

Jason did a lot better in the pairs meeting at Torun but he did not have enough backup from Max Fricke. He got through to the final but was beaten by P Pawlicki along with Zmarzlik.

You could argue that Doyle should have looked after his younger team mate in the final instead of passing him & riding off into the distance, which left Fricke somewhat exposed.

  4. I doubt if the gaps in April and May are to allow construction work, would be financial suicide, still fixtures to fit in. The Robins could be bottom of the table early on with all the away matches!

With some very tough matches away aswell at home, they could well be pointless until end of May!

  5. I'm waiting for Starman to say Kyle Newman who has been reserve for 6 seasons and never been anything but a second string I'm the lower league. If Kyle kicks on this season in both leagues then Chris Louis will have achieved what Middlo has failed to do

Newman has been/was heat leader this season for Plymouth.

You are comparing apples to oranges. Middlo and Hawkins are team managers, Louis is not team manager and hasn't been for a few seasons. You should know this since you're an Ipswich fan!!

  6. So the creditors report must be untrue because I trust newman implicitly,Ipswich have got them selfs a belting rider there.

Riders are definitely still owed money.

However, that money is to be paid by BSPA (when they get around to it).

Kurtz and the rest of the Plymouth side were getting paid this season. It was merely happening slower and slower as the season went on, which is usually a bad sign.

  7. Wouldn't be at all surprised to see Buster at Leicester. Didn't Jonathan have a part to play in the return of the Lions?

I seem to recall he was involved in the very early stages.

I'm not a fan of some of the new rules I have to admit, but it's a good job Buster is at the helm this winter. I can't see any of the recent other leaders prepared to pull up their sleeves and get well and truly stuck in like he appears to have done.

  8. That I can't answer, it appears we have done nothing untoward. I expect Andersen will be a 5. Only ever ridden the Danish league from what I can tell (other than the U21 rounds).

If his brother was given an assessed average for 7.00 at Redcar (with no World U21 Finals experience), you would have thought MBA would be given at least the same average, but seems logic is a foreign word in Speedway.

  9. Yes, I am astounded. Any logical assessment would have MBA at 7.00 (6 at a pinch, but certainly not 5.00). Having seen him more than once abroad and the other riders previously named it would be a real slap in the face to British riders to give proven performers in the World Under 21 Final such ridiculously low assessed averages.

Whilst British riders who have ridden in the World U21 Finals are saddled with ridiculous grades trying to get a ride in Denmark.

  10. It's unfair to fully judge until all of the sides have been released.

    But.......

If the obvious 2 signings are made by Poole, they look very impressive. As do Rye House, who have the potential to build up quite a HTA if the side clicks.

Obviously everything is up in air in Coventry (and I hope everything works out for them), but the side they built looked very solid to me. The reserves were strong, and they had enough all round improvement in them to well and truly be in the mix.

But Swindon....it actually looks like Rosco wanted to have his best buds (Doyle and Morris) in the side, and gave minimal thought to the rest of the side.

Weakest side by far to me, and will require at least one rider to have a special season and/or changes.
