My last post on the subject... If anyone is interested in seeing extended video highlights from the US Open Series in NY from labor day weekend, my videos are now up. Champion Speedway event is here and includes the last 3 of the 4 'A' Finals and the two lap run-off. 2010 U.s. Open Series, New York

Paul, NY Speedway mtgs these days can get close to 700-1,000 I have heard, but the meetings I have been to are around the 300-500 mark. California speedway tracks can get much larger crowds for the bigger meetings. The Canadian tracks are approx the same as the NY tracks - and remember, these tracks are not just running speedway bikes on the program but include Quads, Flat Trackers, Go Karts etc.

What Me Miss About 70s Speedway

To think - if they had made the main character in the series 'Life on Mars' - a speedway fan instead of a footie fan, it would have been so easy to film at a current speedway track and replicate the 70's :-) Not many changes needed at most tracks, incl the fashions being worn by the fans !

Trees - I first went to Lynn in 1973. I will never forget the walk each saturday night from the South Gates to the track going down saddlebow road past the Beet factory (before the A47 by pass was built) I was too young to own a sar and would catch a bus into Lynn from Middleton. Standing on the apex of bends 3&4 with my large perspex sheet/programme holder so I didn't have to pop my head down when the bikes came past Getting excited at seeing cars with bikes on the back as we drove past them on motorways when we were on holidays. Large Stickers across the top of windscreens Collecting yellow fixture sheets from the office to stick up at the village post office and bus shelter (man I wish I had kept a couple) And Lynn progs definitely had an aroma ! Amazing what you remember. Exotic foreign riders, like rare Poles coming over for Pride of the East. Talking of which - Pride of the East in late October and car tailbacks snaking into Lynn.....

  7. Briefly... This past weekend saw the running of the 2010 US Open Series in New York. The series is two nights of racing run at (current) NY tracks Action Park, Greene and Champion Speedway in Owego. On Saturday night at Action Park the main final was won by NY's Adam 'the missile' Mittl. Some of you may remember Adam as a member of the USA Dream Team back in 2006. Tommy Hedden of CA. (the 2009 US Open Champion) was second, Casey Donholt NY was third, Mike Faria fourth and Josh Larsen trailed off in fifth place On Sunday night the racing was tremendous and the 'A' Final was run over 4 heats, featuring, Josh Larsen, Tommy Hedden, Mike Faria, Adam Mittl and Casey Donholt, the top 4 riders each taking a turn on different gates. And after four heats, Tommy Hedden and Josh Larsen finished level on overall series points. A run-off was required. In the first attempt at the two lap run-off, Larsen took the lead but Hedden got caught up in Larsen's machinery and took both of them to the ground. So we had a re-start with both riders, no penalty for Hedden and the reigning US Open Champion didn't make a mistake the second time, holding Larsen at bay to hold on to his crown. Larsen rode brilliantly for someone who hadn't been on a bike for over two years and obviously still loves his speedway judging from his smiling face throughout the two days. NY's Mikey Buman who will be riding in the UK for the USA Touring Team this October finished 7th overall (2nd in the B Final) and was on and off both nights. I have seen him ride much better than this in the past. There are great pictures from Saturday night's racing at http://tinyurl.com/282csm4. I have some pictures from the Sunday event (incl many of Larsen and Dukie Ermolenko) which will be up on my blog soon. I will post a link in this thread when they are up there...

    Len Silver On Tactical Subs

"My heart is still banging from the excitement of last Friday's thrilling encounter with the Poole Pirates. At one stage I really thought we'd about had it, and all because of the existing Tactical Substitute rule which allows a star man to replace a lower scoring rider when the team is only 6 pts in arrear. For some years now I have considered this rule in its exisiting form to be patently unfair because if a strongish team, racing at either a very 'unbiased track' or at the home of a weak team, finds itself 6 pts behind, by the use of tacticals, that team can easily be 2 pts AHEAD within 2 races and win a match that otherwise they would have lost. A couple of seasons back it happened to us about 6 times and pushed us down the league table to a placing we definitely did not deserve. I believe the Tactical Substitute rule should be changed to make it more difficult (but not impossible) to win a match by its use and therefore remove the injustice that presently exists. Of course very strong clubs,or those like Ipswich, with tremendous home advantage, love the rule as it is because they, if ever, suffer its injustices and often benefit from it when away from home. So, when I proposed changes in the past, my suggestions have been voted out by those who enjoy the benefits of the rule. Nonetheless I am intending once again to try and get things altered this winter." This was Len Silver's editorial in the programme for the Hackney Metro Fours events on 2nd September 1983. I wonder what he really things about double pointed mickey mouse joker tacticals ?

    Americans In British Speedway (1970-90)

I was fortunate to chat with Dukie a number of times over the past few years when he comes out to the NY tracks. And me being a Stars fan the subject of his career there has come up, once. He loved the race track but that crash really did leave a scar that he would rather just not talk about. My 1-2-3 Penhall S Moran Sigalos These days I love watching Shawn McConnell whenever he makes it out to NY. He's doing it for fun but he still loves winning.

Hall Of Fame - What If

I'm bored so forgive the hypothetical post. As many of you know, in North America all major sports (and some minor) have their own 'Hall of Fame'. I have been to 3 (Soccer, Hockey and Baseball) of them - not interested in Basketball of Gridiron football. When a former player is elected by the sportswriters, into their respective hall of fame, one of the questions asked is what hat or shirt will be displayed for them, as the team that they enter the hall in. In the mdoern age, many players move around clubs, very few staying in one place their whole career. Recently, in Baseball, there was talk of which cap would be used for Roger Clemens, the Red Sox, for whom he pitched for most of his career or the Yankees, for whom he finished his career and won a world series with. Clemens had said he wanted a Yankees cap, as the Boston media and fans had given him a hard time after he left the club. And now he will never get in following all the drug allegations. So in Speedway - if a national hall of fame existed just what body colour would be used for the superstars of the sport ? And especially now when some riders get to ride for so many many clubs in the space of a few years. Here are my starters for 10... Norman Hunter - West Ham, Wolves Swindon ? Ivan Mauger - is he Belle Vue or Exeter or ? Ole Olsen - Wolves or Coventry ? Malcom Simmons - Kings Lynn or Poole ? Dave Jessup - Reading or Kings Lynn or Wimbledon or ? or does he get in :-) Tony Rickardsson - Ipswich, Kings Lynn or Poole ? Bobby Schwartz - if he got in - Cradley or Reading or ? Shawn Moran - if he got in ?

    Mystery Men Retro Photos

Tracy (This is an edited reply - as I initiallly claimed Doug White hadn't ridden for the Stars - silly me forgot all about him) Do you mean Wimbledon Junior -1 on the last page ? Doug White rode for Lynn in 1967 - 24 rides in all. That rider is definitely wearing a Dons body colour and the photo is listed as 1976. The 1976 Stars body colour had Kings Lynn printed on it - with a total of 5 stars - check the teams gallery page on the Retro site.

Wow - I could have sworn it was him.. but perhaps it's either Brian Paddington or Brian Emery ?

Isn't the Kings Lynn rider Kelvin Mullarkey - younger, all cleaned up and hair combed ?

    American Speedway Online

..... and given the way the US$ is worth buttons - this is cheap viewing for those who buy things in quids or Euro's ! Somewhere on the site amongst the free videos is one of a Shawn 'Mad Dog' McConnell helmet cam race. Watch as he picks off opponents one by one, from the back in his handicap race. Pretty cool.
