MIDLAND DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE 2024
The MDL 2024 will be contested by three clubs .. Birmingham DUCTAIR Bulls, Birmingham SUPPORTERS CLUB Buffaloes and the Leicester Cubs.
It was hoped that a few other clubs would contest the league but unfortunately they are not committing to it despite interest from them. Some may be offering some challenge second halves later in the season so the three teams in the MDL should get additional fixtures.
Last year the two Birmingham sides dominated the MDL finishing joint top but a planned play off was lost to the weather and the two sides are having a decider early season at Perry Barr to claim bragging rights for the new campaign!
Birmingham will run MDL strength second halves all season with individuals and challenges for their expanding squads with several newcomers joining the ranks at Perry Barr with recruits from the local grass track scene where the club have a tie up with the Formula Grass Association . Additionally the club have a new recruit from moto cross joining their ranks having been tempted to give speedway a try.
The teams will meet home and away twice. Under a change to the rules clubs can use a National League rider up to a 5 point average but will give chances to young riders aiming to put themselves in the shop window for the NL.
League co-ordinator Laurence Rogers is looking forward to giving as many young riders important track time as possible, “ It would have been good to have had a few more clubs joining our ranks but some have decided to just do their own thing. The league is a stepping stone for young riders and the more track time they get the better and thank you to Leicester for coming on board to ensure this league survived . There are lots of young riders out there and at Birmingham we do what we can to develop them and give them the opportunity to ride in a team. We will be running two teams again with separate squads and continue the friendly rivalry we have between the Bulls and the Buffaloes and look forward to the clashes with the Leicester Cubs.”

The 2023 British Under 19 Final, which was cancelled after heat 4 on the 28th June due to rain, has been rearranged to be again be hosted at Official Birmingham Speedway on Wednesday 25th October.The revised line up is as follows (in draw order)1. 2 guests ?? Billy Budd was a guest. Ashton Vale is eligible for MDL and not in any other side ? Jake Breeze has been riding for Buffaloes .
This fixture could have been run when Birmingham were at Redcar a few weeks before but there was a NJL match and on that occasion the Buffaloes had a full side available . This was a one off when the squad were not able to travel

Seriously....... Thank you for bringing this to our notice. I, honestly didn't know the MDL was running. It's good to see some new names coming into the sport (even from the FGA).
There will be a one off play off final ... there will be a toss of a coin to decide who is the "home " team in red and blue and the "away" team in white and yellow and which side of the pits they get!!

BIRMINGHAM BUFFALOES WIN AT REDCAR TIES UP TOP OF TABLE WITH BIRMINHAM BULLS ,… TITLE TO BE DECIDED AS PLAY OFF FINAL
The two Birmingham MDL sides will meet in a play off final at the Alan Grahame Memorial meeting against Cradley after the SUPPORTERS CLUB BUFFALOES took victory at Redcar 21-15 to finish level in the table with the DUCTAIR BULLS.
The final fixture at Redcar saw the Buffaloes without the majority of their squad for various reasons and they ended up with a 3 man team when Jack Shimelt was unavailable due to work commitments. The trio included 15 year old Ashton Vale making his MDL debut and the Kent Royals recruit notched up 11 points defeated only by Redcar debutant Senna Summers, son of former rider Aaron Summers.
Bulls skipper 16 year old Billy Budd guested for the Buffaloes with 9+2 with Summers spoiling his maximum chances in heat 6. But amazingly this was the Redcar’s first competitive speedway rides and the youngster looks to be a good prospect.
Jake Breeze , a newcomer to speedway this year and recruited through the club’s tie up with the Formula Grass Association (FGA) , got better with each ride getting his confidence back after a bad crash on the grass . He claimed his first points in heat 6 and is another one for the future.

BULLS END THEIR MDL FIXTURES IN STYLE ---WITH 3 UNBEATEN RIDERS IN 26-10 WIN.Putting themselves into top position aiming to retain their title the Birmingham DUCTAIR Bulls recorded a resounding 26-10 over Redcar Bear Cubs . With three unbeaten riders the Bulls dominated the meeting.Bulls young skipper Billy Budd got his paid maximum despite touching the tapes in heat 2 and came off 15 metres to work his way through to link with Eli Meadows for a 5-1. Kai Ward was in top form with a full maximum from his 3 rides . Meadows had two paid wins on top of his heat 2 race victory.15 year old Midlander Joe Crewe notched 2 points improving each time he rides for Birmingham. For the Bear Cubs Edward Davison battled with 4 hard earned points whilst Lee Harrison was top scorer with 5 points.With Birmingham Buffaloes having one meeting left away at Redcar the 2023 MDL title is still up for grabs. BIRMINGHAM are back in action at Perry Barr this Wednesday (August 9, 7.30) when they host Redcar - and there will be plenty of additional attractions for junior supporters to enjoy.
It will be the first home meeting of the school summer holidays for the Curtis Sport Brummies and club chiefs have moved to make sure there’s plenty to keep the kids entertained from the moment they arrive at the stadium with doors opening at 6pm.
There will be a children’s entertainer providing plenty of fun and activities, including a picture trail hunt, whilst Brummie Bear will be joined by TV’s very own Bluey and Marshall from Paw Patrol.
The pits will also be open until 6.45 where riders will be available for photographs and autographs.
Even once the night of enthralling Speedway racing commences, there will be a further opportunity to take part in the interval entertainment on the infield.
A reminder it’s FREE admission for all children aged 11 and under at Perry Barr in 2023 while Juniors aged 12-16 will be admitted for just £3.-

BIRMINGHAM bosses have made the early decision to rearrange Wednesday’s (August 2) scheduled home fixture against Plymouth.
The Curtis Sport Brummies were due to meet the Gladiators in the Cab Direct Championship at Perry Barr.
But with the track already sodden and several forecasts showing thundery showers from Tuesday night and throughout the whole of Wednesday, bosses have made the decision early to minimise inconvenience for all.
The two clubs have swiftly agreed a restaging date and the two will now meet at Perry Barr on Wednesday, September 6.
It means the Curtis Sport Brummies will begin a hectic schedule at home to Redcar on Wednesday, August 9 (7.30) - that will be their first of eight meetings in the space of five weeks.

don't park at one stop as restrictions in place due to new owners . The stadium car park by the old car wash is £3 opens about 5.30 with gates open at 6 . Just round corner on A34 there is room for 45 cars outside Bracebridge Engineering and Kalsi Kitchens with a sign showing this and a volunteer manning it .

BATTLE OF THE BIRMINGHAM SIDES SEE BULLS DRAW LEVEL AT TOP OF TBLE WITH BUFFALOES
The Birmingham DUCTAIR Bulls drew level at the top of the MIDLAND DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE with the Birmingham SUPPORTERS CLUB Buffaloes after a hard fought battle that saw the Bulls triumph 19-17.
The Buffaloes young skipper Max James had a lucky escape in heat 3 when crashing by the starting gate with his bike clearing the fence but he was thankfully all ok. This was the 16 year old’s first dropped points of the season losing his perfect 12 point average. The resultant 5-1 to the Bulls in the end was vital . the Buffaloes bounced back from that 5-1 loss to level the scores with 5-1 of their own in 4 from Eli Meadows and Tim Colley. They then posted a 4-2 in heat 5 to restore a two point lead at 16-14. With the result all resting on the final race the Bulls skipper Billy Budd made a dream start followed by his team mate Kai Ward to record his maiden MDL race win with the 5-1 giving his dide victory.
There was a MDL debut in Buffaloes colours for young grass track rider Jake Breeze coming up against another Formula Grass Track rider Joe Crewe in the Bulls side as Birmingham give chances to new up and coming riders. This also is now extended along with the 125cc heats to a new electric bike group pre-meeting with exhibitions on REVVI bikes which the fans are loving watching.

BUFFALOES COME OUT ON TOP IN BATTLE OF THE BIRMINGHAM MDL SIDES
The top of the table MDL clash between the two Birmingham sides saw the Birmingham Supporters club BUFFALOES come out on top against the DUCTAIR Bulls.
The Bulls were hit by the loss of Kai Ward, Billy Budd and Luke Harrison from the clash but the quartet of Bulls battled hard but their rivals had the edge over them taking the clash 21-15 to go top of the table. 15 year old Joe Crewe made his debut having recently started riding speedway.
Max James led his side with a 9 point maximum backed up by Eli Meadows who had his maximum chances dashed by Tim Colley in heat 5. Bulls skipper Bailey Fellows missed his last ride after sustaining bike damage laying down in heat 3 avoiding team partner Tim Colley.
The sides will meet again on July 12th when the Buffaloes will be the home side.

BIRMINGHAM stage the British Under-19 Final at Perry Barr on Wednesday, June 28 (7.30) – and the 16-rider line-up has now been confirmed.
Brummies reserve Joe Thompson will be among the favourites on his home track with twin brother Dan, who is also set to re-sign for the club as an injury replacement in a couple of weeks, also included.
Jake Mulford who, like the Thompson twins, is a Rising Star in the Sports Insure Premiership, and finished runner-up in last year’s event, will also fancy his chances.
Ashton Boughen, who went through the card in the British Youth Championships at Perry Barr on Wednesday night, will also be looking to make an impression.

Leon had a night to forget .. puncture before his first ride , two chain breaks on the line then a fall ..... all part of the joys of speedway ! Steve had paid 6 from 3 rides but then fell in the same spot that had caught several riders out inc Emil !
