NEWPORT SPEEDWAY OFFICIAL MEDIA RELEASE HORNETS FACE LEAGUE CHAMPIONS IN A BANK HOLIDAY SPECIAL The Newport Hornets face the reigning National League Champions the Buxton Hitmen in a Bank Holiday Monday fixture at Queensway Meadows with tapes up from 2.30pm The Derbyshire side are spearheaded by the 2010 'National League Rider of the Year' Robert Branford and Ben Taylor who is returning to the sport after a year out with a complicated wrist injury. Not to forget their experienced skipper and one of the fastest starters in the sport - Adam Allott. However, the visitors also run two reserves John MacPhail and newcomer Ryan Blacklock who may find the Hornets reserve pairing of David Gough and Richard Andrews too hot to handle around Newport's 285-metre shale oval. With the Hornets also tracking a strong top two in Jay Herne and Todd Kurtz then this intriguing contest may be settled in the middle order of each team with James White-Williams and Matthew Bates taking on ex-Hornet Luke Priest and veteran Dean Felton for the balance of the minor race places. A space has been left in anticipation of another overseas unknown putting himself in the shop window for the 2011 season. The Trophy will be contested over 12 qualifying heats, two semi-finals for the top eight scorers and the four-rider Grand Final for the title. Commented Newport stalwart Craig Watson: 'It is a chance for the team which has gelled so well and really turned the season around to say goodbye to our loyal fans. 6. NEWPORT SPEEDWAY OFFICIAL MEDIA RELEASE STRENGTHENED HORNETS ON VERGE OF PLAY-OFF FINAL The Newport Hornets race the Bournemouth Buccaneers at Queensway Meadows this Sunday afternoon at 1pm in the second leg of the National League Play Off Semi-Final. The Hornets defeated the Buccaneers in the first leg at Poole Speedway on October 6th by 49 points to 36 and will have the plus of Kyle Newman and Luke Priest returning to the line-up after their absence last Sunday with James White-Williams and Tom Young reverting to their normal reserve partnership. With Todd Kurtz required for the Newport Wasps Young Shield away leg at Rye House the same afternoon then former Newport Wasp Nick Simmons will guest for the young Aussie. Despite that home reverse the Buccaneers have a strong heat leader trio in Jay Herne, James Brundle and Mark Baseby. Jay is the son of former 1970s Wasps star Phil Herne and has recovered well from serious back injuries sustained at Queensway Meadows in March while Brundle has previous Premier League experience with Kings Lynn and also rode for Eastbourne in the Elite League. The overall winner of this semi-final will meet the winners of the Buxton Hitmen versus Dudley Heathens clash in the other semi-final for the National League title itself. Commented Laurence Rogers who will take charge of the Hornets with Kevin Brown away with the Wasps at Rye House: 'We were only caught out last week at home against Kings Lynn because of the unavoidable absence of several riders. We don't have that problem this week plus Nick Simmons knows his way around our circuit and will prove an adequate cover for Todd Kurtz. We are on the verge of an appearance in the Play Off Final and we deserve it after the season we have enjoyed. We are determined not to let the Buccaneers off the hook.' 7. MEETING IS NOW ON SUNDAY 10TH AT 2.30 PM NEWPORT SPEEDWAY OFFICIAL MEDIA RELEASE HORNETS IN CUP QUEST The Newport Hornets take on the Kings Lynn Young Stars in the second leg of the National League's Knock Out Cup Semi-Final at Queensway Meadows on Sunday afternoon at 2.30pm. Newport will be without Kyle Newman who is on Premier League duty with Birmingham and so operate the rider replacement rule for him while Scunthorpe's Ashley Birks will guest for the injured Tim Webster. James White-Williams and Tom Young returned to the Hornets side in their 49-38 away victory against the Bournemouth Buccaneers at Poole Speedway on Wednesday in the first leg of the play-off semi-finals. James steps up to the number two spot in the riding order to replace Luke Priest who has a prior commitment. Kings Lynn will also be missing a rider who is required by his Premier League club so the absent Simon Lambert will be replaced by Plymouth's Mark Simmonds. The Norfolk side truly are young stars with the bulk of their septet being teenagers in the first stages of their sporting career as are a number of the home side. Team captain Tony Atkin recognises what a crucial part of the season this is: 'The Hornets have done well all season and we are now so close to appearing in two finals. We must not let the opportunity slip and I will be rallying the boys to give all they have got. I'm toward the end of my long career so I fancy some silverware but it is the loyal Newport fans who deserve it.' NEWPORT 'WESSEX BUS' HORNETS: 1. Todd Kurtz 2. James White-Williams 3. 8. HORNETS IN FLOODLIT MATCH THIS SUNDAY It is Sunday evening racing at Queensway Meadows this week as the Newport Hornets face bogey side the Buxton Hitmen in National Trophy action with the riders on parade from 6.30pm. The Hornets are waiting on fitness reports for their home-grown reserves James White-Williams and Tom Young while Tim Webster will definitely be absent after suffering a broken ankle in the collision with team partner Young at the Isle of Wight Speedway, Ryde on Tuesday evening. Young suffered delayed concussion while White-Williams is still recovering from a crash at Rye House Speedway in Hertfordshire on September 11th. However the good news is that team captain returns to the side after cracking ribs in a fall at Scunthorpe Speedway on September 10th. Explained Hornets' team manager Kevin Brown: 'We are leaving several blanks in the matchday racecard for Sunday as although there is a fair chance that both James and Tom will be fit to race against Buxton we may have to book some guest reserves. With respect to Tim's absence I may operate the rider replacement rule unless we have signed a new rider by then.' Despite injury problems in recent weeks the Hornets still remain as one of the National League's form teams and the National Trophy clash with Buxton is likely to provide another close encounter with the visitors having squeezed a narrow 46 - 44 National League victory at Queensway Meadows on July 23rd with their number one Craig Cook having taken the track record at that level to 59.32 seconds for the four laps. Cook is not the only up and coming youngster in the Hitmen line-up as the Derbyshire club have blooded Australian newcomers Robert Branford and Nick Morris this season plus 2008 British Under-15 Champion Jason Garrity. Branford, Morris and Garrity are a mere 16-years-old each but are already consistent points scorer. That youthful vigour blends well with the experience of skipper Adam Allott who is regarded as having amongst the best reactions in the sport when the tapes rise to begin a speedway race. For the Hornets the switch to a 6.30 start is to allow them experience under the newly installed floodlights before the Cup semi-final against the Kings Lynn Young Stars at Queensway Meadows on the evening of Friday October 1st at 7.30pm and the league play-off leg against the Bournemouth Bucanneers on a date yet to be confirmed. NEWPORT 'WESSEX BUS' HORNETS: 1. Todd Kurtz 2. Luke Priest 3. To be confirmed 4. Tony Atkin © 5. Kyle Newman 6. To be confirmed 7. To be confirmed BUXTON HITMEN: 1. Craig Cook 2. Rider replacement rule for Jonathon Bethell 3. Robert Branford 4. Adam Allott © 5. Nick Morris 6. Lewis Dallaway 7. Jason Garrity Meanwhile the Newport Wasps have qualified for the end-of-season Jack Young Shield and have drawn the Berwick Bandits in the first round. The first leg will take place at Shielfield Park in the Scottish Borders on the evening of Saturday October 2nd with the second leg at Queensway Meadows on the evening of Friday October 8th at 7.30pm. The competition is held in honour of the memory of former World Speedway Champion Jack Young who remains the only rider to have won the sport's ultimate prize while a Second Division rider and the first World Champion to successfully defend his title. 9. NEWPORT SPEEDWAY OFFICIAL MEDIA RELEASE HORNETS TO FACE BOURNEMOUTH IN THE PLAY-OFFS The busy speedway season at Queensway Meadows will continue into October as the Newport Hornets will race the Bournemouth Buccaneers home and away in the first stage of the National League play-offs. Dates are yet to be decided but the latest news is that the opposition have signed Jay Herne as a direct replacement for their injured number one Jerran Hart. Jay, the son of 1970s Wasps star Phil Herne, was blocked from riding for the Rye House Rockets in their Premier League match at Newport this Sunday because of an issue over the deadline for such changes but will be back at the Queensway Meadows circuit early next month. Meanwhile Hornets team boss Kevin Brown has praised his team for their hat-trick of victories last weekend when they won at Scunthorpe on the Friday evening and Rye House on the Saturday evening in the National League and then completed their hectic schedule back in Newport last Sunday with a National Trophy victory over Plymouth. 'Considering that we lost skipper Tony Atkin with rib injuries on Friday and then James White-Williams was knocked unconscious in a major crash on the Saturday the rest of the boys showed great spirit to keep taking the fight to their opponents. Special praise for young Todd Kurtz who actually rode four matches in three days as he also rode for the Wasps at Rye House. We hope that Tony and James will be fit to return for our next away fixture on the Isle of Wight on Tuesday September 21st and we certainly want them back for the play-off and Cup rounds in October.' The next scheduled home fixture for the Hornets is on Sunday September 26th against the Buxton Hitmen in the National Trophy with a 2.30pm start.
  10. Newport Speedway Official Media Release HORNETS ON TRAIL OF MORE SUCCESS The Newport Hornets pursue more silverware this Sunday afternoon from 2.30pm when the Plymouth Devils visit in the National Trophy competition. The Hornets are already in a strong position to take part in the National League play-offs and have a forthcoming Cup semi-final appearance so are keen to keep up their momentum in the National Trophy which is restricted to the independent clubs Plymouth, Weymouth and Buxton as well as the Hornets who are Newport's second team after the Premier League Wasps. The Devils have a strong heat leader trio in the form of Nicki Glanz, Mark Simmonds and Seemond Stephens with Glanz and Simmonds having won the National League Pairs competition at Newport's Queensway Meadows Stadium on August 7th. Newport have named local teenager Tom Young at reserve despite his sustaining a foot injury at Buxton Speedway last Sunday and so are confident of his recovery. For the Lliswerry youngster and his team-mates Sunday's fixture will be the third in three days as they will have ridden at Scunthorpe on Friday evening and Rye House on the Saturday evening. Commented team manager Kevin Brown: 'It is a busy time for the Hornets and this weekend will be a test of men and machinery. However, I suspect the boys are going to continue to do well in all available competitions so a full fixture list looks in prospect into October.' NEWPORT 'WESSEX BUS' HORNETS: 1. Todd Kurtz 2. Luke Priest 3. Tim Webster 4. Tony Atkin © 5. Kyle Newman 6. James White-Williams 7. Tom Young PLYMOUTH DEVILS: 1. Nicki Glanz 2. Jaime Pickard 3. Matthew Bates 4. Seemond Stephens © 5. Mark Simmonds 6. Bob Charles 7. Ben Reade The Newport Wasps will also be in action at Rye House Speedway in Hertfordshire on Saturday evening in a double-header at the Hertfordshire circuit. The Rye House Rockets make the return visit to Queensway Meadows on Sunday September 19th at 2.30pm in Premier League action. Newport Vs Glasgow

NEWPORT SPEEDWAY MEDIA RELEASE LIGHTS ON AS WASPS FACE GLASGOW It will be an historic evening for the speedway stadium at Queensway Meadows on Friday evening when the new floodlights come on during the Premier League match between the Newport Wasps and the Glasgow Tigers with tapes up at 7.45. The sport was run under lights between 1964 and 1977 at the former track at the now defunct Somerton Park Stadium. There was no speedway in the city until its revival at the new site in 1997 and so that is a 33-year gap. To celebrate there will be a Happy Hour in the Wasps Nest Bar between 6pm and 7pm, a firework display at the conclusion of the match and a karoake evening in the bar to follow. Importantly there is a special offer on admission for children aged 5 to 15 of 'Kids for a quid!' Club owner Steve Mallett commented: 'It is a moment we have all looked forward to and I would like to thank Gareth 'Gazza' Ward and his volunteers for turning the project around in only six weeks. We now have more options over our raceday plus we can attract more events to the stadium which is good news for the continuity of the sport in the city.' On track the visitors have what is regarded as the strongest spearhead in the division after the Scottish club signed the former British Champion, England international and Grand Prix rider Joe Screen this Summer to join another rider also riding outside of the Elite League for the first time in his career in the form of Australian Travis McGowan. They will enjoy support from young Australian Josh Grajczonek who has come on in leaps and bounds this season. Newport come into the fixture on the back of four consecutive home victories and confidence is high in the camp despite the strength of the opposition. Unlike many clubs the Newport management have not chopped and changed the team when the results were not consistent and are now bearing the fruit of their investment and patience with first season riders Kim Nilsson, Todd Kurtz, Alex Davies and Robin Aspegren. NEWPORT 'DARLOWS' WASPS: 1. Leigh Lanham © 2. Craig Watson 3. Kim Nilsson 4. Kyle Legault 5. Robin Aspegren 6. Alex Davies 7. Todd Kurtz GLASGOW TIGERS: 1. Joe Screen 2. Lee Dicken © 3. 14. Official Media Release HORNETS AIM TO KEEP UP MOMENTUM The Newport Hornets aim to keep up their recent unbeaten run when they face the Buxton Hitmen in a National League fixture at Queensway Meadows on Friday evening with tapes up at 7pm. However, there is no complacency in the camp and this is reflected by 17-year-old number one Todd Kurtz. 'We have excellent team talks from our veteran skipper Tony Atkin in which he keeps all talk of being top of the league in the background and makes us concentrate on the immediate match we are about to race. Each match at a time is genuinely how we are dealing with our season and we do not underestimate anybody.' Good advice as Buxton have the League Riders' Champion Craig Cook at number one and the experienced Adam Allott in support at the top end of the team while Nick Morris and Robert Branford are two young Australians who have made quite an impact in their first full season in British Speedway. Kyle Newman returns to the Hornets line-up after being on Premier League duty with Birmingham and so a solid one to seven is on track. NEWPORT HORNETS: 1. Todd Kurtz 2. Mark Jones 3. Tim Webster 4. Lewis Dallaway 7. Jason Garrity The match will be followed in the Wasps Nest bar by a special fund raising event for the new floodlights. Nick Mallett and track curator David Dean will be subjected to 'THE BIG WAX' with both having bravely volunteered to have their chests waxed at £5 a strip !!!!! There is more speedway action on the Sunday afternoon when the Newport Wasps take on the Scunthorpe Scorpions in Premier League action with tapes up at 2.30pm. FROM OFFICIAL MEDIA RELEASE HORNETS SEEK CUP GLORY: It's a busy weekend for speedway fans in South Wales starting with the Newport Hornets facing the Weymouth Wildcats in the second leg of the second round of the National League Knock Out Cup on Friday evening at Queensway Meadows with tapes up at 7pm. The Hornets are the form team of the division this season and are eight points ahead going into this tie having won by 49 points to 41 at the Wessex Stadium in the first leg. With the publication of new averages teenager Todd Kurtz moves to number one in the riding order having achieved 9.37 in this his first full season in British Speedway. He forms a strong opening partnership with fellow Aussie Mark Jones who has been given a spot in the 16-man line up for the Welsh Open Championship at Newport Speedway on Sunday afternoon from 1pm. Weymouth are skippered by Pontypool's Tom Brown who forms a spearhead with the only South African racing in British Speedway - Byron Bekker. Tom is an ex-Newport rider as is reserve Richard Andrews who was in the Hornets squad last season. NEWPORT 'WESSEX BUS' HORNETS: 1. Todd Kurtz 2. Mark Jones 3. Tim Webster 4. Tony Atkin © 5. Luke Chessell Speedway continues at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff for the British Grand Prix at 5pm on Saturday and on Sunday gates at Newport Speedway will be open at 11am in readiness for the Welsh Open Championship when 16 riders compete over 20 heats to qualify for a 21st heat Grand Final that has £2,250 worth of prize money.
  17. HORNETS IN QUEST TO STAY ON TOP National League table-toppers the Newport Hornets face the Plymouth Devils at Queensway Meadows this Sunday afternoon with tapes up at 2.30pm. The Hornets went top of the table after the combination of an away win on the Isle of Wight followed by a home victory over the Mildenhall Fen Tigers last Sunday. However there is bags of experience in the visitors' line up and a tough tussle is anticipated. Skipper of the Devils is former Cornish Moto-Cross Champion Seemond Stephens who has ridden the bulk of his career since 1997 with West Country clubs St. Austell, Exeter and Plymouth. He forms a strong spearhead with fellow Cornishman Mark Simmonds who spent 15 seasons with the Exeter Falcons and came out of retirement in 2008 to link up with the Devils. The third former Exeter Falcon in the side is Lee Smethills who has ridden for many other Premier League clubs since taking up the sport in 1998. Experience is blended with youth in the second string department with youngsters Paul Starke and Matt Bates achieving high averages whilst there is a local flavour in the first reserve berth with Newportonian and former Newport Maverick David Gough in action. Plymouth are waiting on a fitness report for ex-Hornet Jaime Pickard in the second reserve berth so have left a blank at number seven. Meanwhile the Hornets change their riding order with the fast-starting Tim Webster switching to number two to partner skipper Tony Atkin while Mark Jones moves to number four. Kyle Newman returns to the fold after his absence on Premier League duty with Birmingham last Sunday. Commented team manager Kevin Brown: 'I am glad that we are full strength for Sunday's clash as Plymouth have riders with experience of riding the Newport track in season's past. Now that we have reached pole position in the league table we must keep working to maintain that.' NEWPORT 'WESSEX BUS' HORNETS: 1. Tony Atkin © 2. Tim Webster 3. Todd Kurtz 4. Mark Jones 5. Welsh Open

Doolan won both the Prince of Wales Trophy and the Welsh Open Championship at the Queensway Meadows circuit last season and must be fancied to make the Grand Final again once the initial 20 heats of racing are complete. He will face a competitive field with the news that Jason Doyle of the Poole Pirates and Australia will also be taking part. They join those who have previously been confirmed in the form of David Howe of Scunthorpe and Great Britain, Ryan Fisher of Edinburgh and America, Cory Gathercole of Somerset and Australia, Ty Proctor of Wolverhampton and Australia, Justin Sedgmen of Birmingham and Australia and Chris Slabon of Poland. MORE STARS ANNOUNCED FOR WALES OPEN Three more riders have been confirmed as taking part in the Wales Open Championship at Newport Speedway on Sunday July 11th at 1pm. Chris Slabon from Poland plus Australians Cory Gathercole of the Somerset Rebels and Justin Sedgmen of the Birmingham Brummies join Ryan Fisher of the Edinburgh Monarchs and America, Ty Proctor of the Wolverhampton Wolves and Australia and David Howe of the Scunthorpe Scorpions and Great Britain plus Craig Watson, Leigh Janham and Kyle Legault from the Newport Wasps in forming part of the 16-man field that will contest the event on the afternoon after the British Speedway Grand Prix at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff the night before. Commented meeting co-ordinator Laurence Rogers: 'We are pleased with how the field is assembling and in Chris Slabon we have attracted a rider who has not raced in this country since his days as an Ipswich Witch in the Elite League several seasons ago. With a massive influx of Polish speedway fans into South Wales for the weekend then our stadium at Queensway Meadows could be very busy indeed. I am waiting on the responses from other invitees and we hope to announce the final sixteen soon' It has also been confirmed that six-times World Speedway Champion Ivan Mauger MBE OBE will be at the event to promote and sign copies of his newly published autobiography.

Good PR or not, to change any race day details requires requesting permission from the relevant governing bodies, and I would imagine they will be as accomodating as FIFA would if they were asked to change their arrangements for us You need to record that game with the ball and 40,000 referees lol
