Thanx for the memory Shirleybee-Ron and Colin Gooddy were two tough sons of guns-Ron always put on a good show at Newport also
-
Hi Britmet-thanx for the comprehensive info-wish I could have been at a few PLRC finals-partic the 64 one !!
-
In the Internatinale thread was interested in Norbold's posting.First he let slip that he is 2 years younger than me-aaghh!!!-I can't be that old can I(no problem 60 is the new 40). Secondly and more interestingly wonder if you could share us your recollection of that night Norbold e.g. was there a big crowd-did Trev Redmond really stand out , who else made an impression etc. Am v. interested in PLRC and its great to hear from someone who was at the first one at Harringay.
-
Matt-does it include year of birth and death(where applicable) for each rider?
-
Tough on Michanek I thought-why not re run it??
-
That's right midland red-the garage was at Bloxwich-thanx also starghost for reminding us of the unusual situation re reserves for 63 World Final-I'd completely forgotten that. Jim Lightfoot used to be known as Captain Jim-not just because he was the Bees capt. but I think there was a movie called that in the early 60's-funny how Jim seems to have disappeared-recall him riding at Long Eaton after he left the Bees.Incidentally does anyone know when Ron quit riding.
-
OK RONBUTLER-in your case we will make an exception and just knock 10 years off -making you 65 so you get to keep all your privileges-having said that even tho you claim to be only 75-do you recall anything about Ron Mountford or Jim Lightfoot as per other thread??
-
engine man-that is right that Ron had a garage and Rick worked there-how did Rick seem when you saw him that time. I think Jim is still alive but nobody seems to know much.Interestingly enough all 3 of these bees had one World Final app. -Ron as noted in 62, Jim in 63 and Rick in 67.
-
OK that must be the one that Trevor Redmond won-anyone know who was second and third. Also why it was held at CH-after that the venue was always neutral
-
This is a good thread-BUT does anyone know anything about Ron e.g. when did he die, the circumstances etc etc. I got the same result when I asked about Jim Lightfoot once-come on you old Bees fans-Ron was a big name in his day and shouldn't be forgotten!Somebody's got to know something.
-
Spin king-the father of Stuart could have been Jack Mountford-but definitely not Ron I reckon.
-
Don't think they were related spin king.
-
Thanx starghost-forgot that-do you know when Ron was born??
-
I am interested in this myself-I recall Ron was one of the first riders to wear contact lenses-he got to the 1962 World Final I think-I recall he and Rick worked together. Did Ron leave any family-he was a tough customer as I recall-I think he rode only for the Bees. Thank you engine man for bringing Ron's name to this forum-another somewhat forgotten name from the past who should be remembered.
-
Thanx Norbold-you are still younger than me-just not by as much as I thought!!!.One point- if you saw the 61 PLRC at Harringay-where was the 1960 one held-was that at Harringay also??Anyway despite your letter to SS and N all those years ago, am still glad , as a PL supporter that Charlie won the Internationale in 1965!!!!!The fates conspired against him in the Brit Final at West Ham later that year-he should have qualified for the World Final!!

I think I must be getting too old for the forum-questions about the 70's and 80's are cropping up(after my time in UK)-so here is one from the sixties-what has happened to Geoff-his name has cropped up tangentially(good word) on other threads here- e.g. most teams ridden for; Newport speedway etc.I recall Geoff getting his first max around 64 or 65 for Newport-he partnered Dick Bradley till Dick's career ending injury, then not sure for the rest of 65 but certainly in 66 he partnered Gote Nordin-then went to Poole in 67 or 68 I think.Geoff was a cockney I think-had an armchair style of riding-hope he is still in good health .
-
Mystery deepens-perhaps Osama Bin Laden was around then too!!
-
I'm sure many folks must recall the Russian bikes being stolen prior to the 72 WF-subsequently some British riders were charged -and I think convicted- of this dastardly crime. I know that Tony Clark(a tough character -was one)-anybody recall who else and what subsequently happened-anybody go to jail for that??
-
You're right Parsloes re the year and reason for first Internationale-I recall a huge surprise in 65 when Charlie Monk from the old Prov. Lge. won it
-
Hi Odd-how old would Geoff be-70 or so?? What is his favorite falling down water-so I'll know what to buy him if I run across him in a pub-is he drinking like Soren Sjosten or like Billy Graham!!
-
Martin Mauger who was the financially challenged rider you were referring to? Was Mike Broadbanks involved in the Russian bike thing or is my memory playing tricks.
-
Wot about Leo McAuliffe, Alf Hagon, certainly Ron How-most famous of all I'd say.Going from memory here.
-
Have e-mailed Vic -will let u know re reply.
-
Thanx Kev -anybody know where he is now??
-
Did Vic run a car dealership for a long while??
