I recall Harry Edwards riding for Wolves at the end of his career in 64,think he rode for Norwich also-right starghost??
-
I'm relying on you here speedyguy!! I recall Harry more than Bert but am very interested in him nonetheless!
-
Speedyguy. what was your take on Bert both as a personality(Tough guy/nice guy etc??)-his persona in the Speedway Star was a jolly sort of person. and as a rider(e.g. do you think he fulfilled his potential /good second string etc) also was he Harry's younger or older brother-I guess Bert would have been well in his thirties when you knew him but kept riding at a high level.Where did he live in later life and what did he do after riding-anybody know.RIP Bert.

I recall seeing Lex Milloy's name on a film credit not so long ago-maybe the comedy "Robin Hood Men in Tights" anyone know where Lex Milloy is now or any other movies he has been associated with.
-
What a shame, I think he was Harry Edwards brother(younger??)-he used to be featured in the Speedway Star a lot , seemed to be a happy go lucky person.Anyone have any other memories to add.

I think you are right Steve -"Joe" Gooddy didn't start till the 50's

Having read the wonderful memories of Waterden Road-my track was Somerton Park. I realise it was not a popular track but I have many happy recollections of the meetings there and the enthusiatic crowds -particularly in 1964 and 1965-and it was a great place then-anybody out in forumland have similar memories.I recall Alby Golden(RIP) breaking the track record; the guy we all loved to hate(Ivor Brown-God bless him); and the tremendous fan base in Waspland; Ron How of Oxford being unbeatable there ditto Jimmy Gooch and how excited we all were when he joined the Wasps. I recall when I lived in Champaign, Illinois, USA(hi chunky in Kahokia) trying to explain to my girlfriend -from Oklahoma-about the Newport Wasps. She thought it was hilarious because in the US,WASPS is short hand for White, Anglo-Saxon Protestants. It would have been like having a team called Reading RC's. I recall drinking Whitbread Trophy beer in the bar behind the stand opposite the starting gate-you had to join the Newport County F.C. Supportes Club to get in. By the way what happened to Whitbread Trophy and Watney's Red Barrel-was in UK recently and you can't buy it anymore.Happy days I wish I could bring them back-anyone out there have Somerton Park memories like this.

That is amazing-I think perhaps he had injuries earlier in his career then-perhaps at Ipswish?Coventry? When did Les pass away-anyone know??
-
Where was Les McGillivray when he retired-I recall him for Hackney-I thought he was injured/sick a lot so did he really never miss a British League match?-was he ever present in 1965 for example? When did Les pass away??
-
Has Jim passed away??
-
Jim has passed away hasn't he-didn't he die quite young, Stan has been dead many years I think.
-
No Cyril Brine did not ride in the 70's -he finished in around 1962-interesting thread this!!
-
Wot about Cyril Brine-did he ride in the 30's??
-
Ditto Jimmy Squibb I think
-
Didn't Bobby Dugard also ride for them a couple of times before he quit(1965)
-
Ta Norbold.
-
I think Ian must be referring to 65 the year they did the double-what was the team now,I think Ken, Sverre, Norman Hunter, Malcom Simmons, Brian Leonard and Ted Ede/Don Smith???Is that right.
-
What about Mark Wynter-or did he sing "Venus in Blue Jeans"??
-
Well this just proves my point-Savalas Clouting is also living forever on this site-didn't he famously beat Ray Wilson at Long Eaton in 1965-I think Rim Malskaitis finished third. Thanks Norbold for bringing his name forward again-perhaps you can update us on his current whereabouts.

After I heard of Vladimir Paznikov's death I mentioned that I was aware of only 2 World Finalists(not riders just talking about World Finalists-[i'm thinking of the one-off World Finals here which I wish were still around]) who had committed suicide- besides VP (if true) I could only think of Kenny Carter, I sadly had forgotten Billy Sanders-so I reckon just 3 WF'ists had died this way. I honestly can't think of any others-so is 3 the number all you speedway historians out there.

Graham Miles will live forever on this site!!
