    Season 1977 Queries (may)

Hi there. As part of my research into the 1977 season, I am looking for the correct heat results for the following meetings: 16 May 1977 Scunthorpe v Coatbridge (NL) - The heat 13 result appears to be misreported, problem is with the Scunthorpe riders in this heat. Speedway Star states Collins, Baugh, White (f exc), Richardson (exc), S.Sheldrick (fell), I am not sure how White has managed to appear in this heat. The report states White was with Sheldrick in the original running of the heat with no mention of Baugh ! Does anybody have the programme to confirm the correct result and what happened ? 26 May 1977 Oxford v Midenhall (CH). According to the Speedway Star (and yearbook) Martin Yeates scored 10 and Kevin Young 9 points, Heat results in the Speedway Star advise Yeates scored 11 and Young 8 points. It looks likely the placings was reversed in either heat 1, 6 or 10. Again does anybody have a completed programme to confirm the correct placings ? Cheers Steve

You're good at picking up the missing meetings ! Just when I had updated the 1976 file last night with the missing Swindon details !! I will post the heat details on the forum tonight and yet again update my file. (I presume this is the NL meeting ?) Steve

    Swindon V Reading 3rd July 1976

It's me that's responsible for this oversight ! Myself and a friend prepare the whole season files (from 1965) on the researcher website. I normally check for missing matches and this meeting "slipped the net". I will post the details shortly and of course update the Season file on the website. Steve

    Stoke V Boston March 19 1977

Hi there. As part of my research into the 1977 season, I am trying to resolve the scores for Boston's Chris Emery and Paul Gilbert's points scored in this meeting. The Speedway Star states that Emery scored 6 and Gilbert 3 points and the published heat details in the Star tallies with these totals. However, Peter Oakes's yearbook advises that Emery scored 5 and Gilbert 4 points. It is possible therefore that in one of the heats the placings may have been reversed. I am unable to clarify the correct scores from this meeting as this is an challenge match, Unfortunately the Speedway Mail completely missed reporting on this meeting so i can't check this ! Does anybody have a completed programme from this meeting to confirm the correct heat placings/scores ? I hope someone can help. Thanks for reading Steve

    Help Needed...1984 Stoke V Ornanrna

Just for interest the Speedway Mail also advises Pullen scored 7 and Bishop 3 points. Again I am not sure if the details were "obtained" from the Speedway Star reporter at the time, or are actually correct. I have spoken to Tony MacDonald (the editor of the Speedway Mail) about this and he did confirm that for several tracks the same reporter was also employed by the Speedway Star, therefore potentially duplicating any "errors" ! No heat results were published in the Mail to advise, as mentioned by Dave a marked programme is required to clarify. Steve

    Season 1976 Queries

Hi there I have the following queries regarding my research into the 1976 Season Pete Smith Testimonial - Poole 8 August Clarification of Brian Collins's score - according to the Speedway Star and the 1977 Yearbook Brian Collins scores 1 point. The published heat results in the Star and Mail advise that he scored no points. Does anybody have a marked programme from this meeting to confirm Brian Collins's score and in which heat the point was scored (if applicable) ? Golden Helmet- Belle Vue 21 August Chris Morton beat Malcolm Simmons 2-1 in the second leg, no heat results for the match race were published in the Speedway Star, does anybody have this information including the race times ? Thanks for reading Steve

    Boston V Weymouth July 25 1976

Hi there. As part of my research into the 1976 season I am looking for clarification of Stuart Cope's and Danny Kennedy's placings in this meeting. The Speedway Star (and Speedway Mail) records Kennedy (Weymouth) scoring 4 and Cope (Boston) 4 points but the heat results advise Kennedy scores 5 and Cope 3 points. It looks likely that Cope finished ahead of Kennedy in heat 2 or 11. Does anybody have a completed programme from this meeting to clarify ? Thanks for reading Steve

    Speedway Riders History And Results.

Compost's comments make some interesting reading. Regarding the compilation of the season files from 1965, yes the heat results rely heavily on the Speedway Star but they are only as accurate as the published results. I try to resolve any individual match queries by the BSF or trying to obtain a completed match programme. I have checked points scorers over the season and they should equal the "Complete History of the British League" averages/Speedway Star track reviews. (Particularly from Season 1966 when Bryan Seery prepared them - for season 1965 I don't know who prepared the Speedway Star end of season averages for this season so I can't vouch for completely accurancy. These were also completed before the publication of Peter Oakes' book in the early 90's). The problem lies in fourth place finishers and exclusions, where it is more difficult to verify. Exclusions are a "minefield" where a tapes exclusion counts as a ride and a two minute exclusion does not !!. Just let to you know even "official" averages can cause problems, in completing the 1965 season file I found a query in the Swindon scorers in the KOC match v Glasgow where I keep getting conflicting information so I don't know what's right. As advised in my files, if anybody finds any errors (I'm sure there is a lot) I am quite happy to amend these. You just have to e-mail me with "corrections". Anyway, I will keep plugging away with the complete 1976 season results.

    Speedway Riders History And Results.

Sidney Regarding the Ivan Mauger's 1969 average. It depends on whether you include league matches and knock-out cup matches. With League matches only (35 to be be exact), Ivan's average was 11.74 (just 12 points dropped !), include the two KO matches (with a further point dropped) reduces to the average to mere 11.67 ! A staggering 22 full and a further 3 paid maximums were recorded in his league fixtures and with another full maximum in the KO cup makes pretty impressive reading. Steve

    Speedway Riders History And Results.

Hi Sidney The Speedway Star is predominently used when producing the heat results in my Season files. As advised in my earlier e-mail the rider's points scored in league and KO matches ARE checked against the the end of season averages published in the "Star" or in Peter Oakes's History of British League 1965-1990 book. Therefore the points scorers for "official" meetings will be accurate (any errors or queries found in them I would like to know about !). Any differences in the individual riders points against the end of season averages are printed on the last page of the respective season file. When preparing the heat results problems do arise when 1) a 2 mins or tapes exclusion in the published heat results are unreported (this happens quite a lot in the Star), 2) an incorrectly reported 4th rider, it is more difficult to vouch for 4 place finishers (as they score nil points !) and 3) they are non official meetings, such as challenges, individuals, pairs meetings, etc. Unfortunately these records cannot be verified as there is no "official" record to compare against. I would like to think that the files I have produced contain a high degree of accurancy and can be trusted for anyone to look back at, use and reminisce (if they wish). Regarding your query regarding Ivan Mauger's 1969 average I will check this out and let you know my findings shortly. Steve

    Speedway Riders History And Results.

I completely agree with Moxey 63 comments. I am responsible for the complete Season files on the Speedway Researcher website from 1965 to 1976. The information for my files are taken from programmes and various magazines (and this forum) to obtain the most accurate details possible, all the official league match point scorers are checked against the end of season averages for accurancy. However, It is exceptionally difficult to verify all meetings for this period due to the passage of time and lack of "official" record keeping. Thank heavens for Bryan Seery who did manage (before computers !) to keep accurate records in the Speedway Star and programmes. Unfortunately, the speedway authorities do not realise (or care) that our great sport has a history and don't appear to "keep" any records relating to previous seasons. The BSPA has finally recognized this and now has a history page on its web page. (hopefully this will develop -but won't rival the Speedway Researcher website).

    Season 1976 Queries

Hi there I am in the process of compiling the full heat results for the 1976 season. Can anybody help me resolve any of the following: 1. Who was non riding reserve for New Zealand in the World Cup qualifier at Ipswich on May 16 ? 2. Eastbourne v Hackney June 13. There are 3 reported Eastbourne riders in heat 8, Sampson wins the heat but is it Colin Richardson or Steve Naylor (f exc) in fourth place? 3. Peterborough v Weymouth v Boston v Mildenhall on June 18, Vic Harding rides in heats 9 and 12, is this correct - shouldn't have Martin Yeates rode in heat 12 ? Possible error in the race formula as this was the first season the NL 4's was run. 4. Wolverhampton v Birmingham June 27. I need to know the riding order for Birmingham, I can't work out what position Arthur Browning rides at (possibly at number 2 - excluded somewhere during the first 4 heats ?) Rider replacement also in operation for Birmingham for Alan Grahame or Soren Sjosten ? If you have a marked programme from any of these meetings I would be very grateful. Thanks for reading. Steve

    Season 1976 Queries

Hi Leicester Hunter. Thanks for that - I never would have worked that out with double R/R in operation ! Hey - that sounds like a good idea for the modern day promoters to consider in this month's conference !!!! Thanks Steve Charley replaced Yeates in heat 16 - otherwise everything else is ok. (Harding did ride 4 times) I think I need a copy of the race formula used in the 1976 NL4's qualifiers to review this. Can anybody help with this ? - I am sure this was changed in the following season. Steve
