    1973 International Series

I remember this because it was my first Wembley meeting, It was probably the first time England (gb) didnot contain certain new zealanders IM BB RM etc; Peter Collins was the new up and coming superstar and Michanek the established super hero(world champion1974?). Looking at the replay now it does not looklike much of a shunt. But on the night the crowd were to a man on there feet screaming off at Michanek. I think the classic race at hyde road, between the two was shortly after this meeting. I seem to remember it was a double header also featuring a second half gb versus the rest of world. Maybe the powers that be considered the main event was not strong enough. Was it the next year we was back at wembley to see an all english riders win in the world team cup.

    Perfect Night's Speedway

Racer Don, I think I was there that night, If not then, other nights just like that. I was 18 with more hair also, and lots less weight. But my fantasy meeting; Track Arlington /Eastbourne. Day Sunday afternoon 3.30pm Team captain, Gordon Kennett Other riders Paul Woods Martin Dugard Malcolm Simmons Kelly Moran Roger Johns Keith Pritchard Davy Kennett Tommy Jansson Barry Briggs Ole Olsen Ivan Mauger Peter Collins Larry Ross Kia Niemi , Think I got too many But this is my fantasy so butt out!! Oh!! and Ronnie Moore and Phil Crump and how could I forget steady Eddie Jancarz If the polish authorites let him get there on time. Referee; Frank Ebdon, if only to sort out the mess of over booked amount of riders. Announcer: Not keen on any really, Mike Bennett was a revelation after years of Ken Tozer I quite like Bryn Williams. Promotor; Bob( its my track I'll do it my way) Dugard The weather would be sunny not to humid (just enough to keep the Bars going) Of course Ebdon would ensure the meeting progressed at a reasonable speed. Then into Hastings, find me and the missis's favourite fish restuarant, and have a nice supper before the long drive back home.
  3. During the commentary on the final, they stated that the stadium was full and they were turning people away. The wife claims that they said the ground held 40.000 and 80.000 had turned up. My response being that I did not think Vojens held more than 15.000 to 18.000 people maximum. "Well that's what they said". she hissed, in her best (don't believe me at your peril) tone. So please can any one help!!! I have tried the vojens site and they don't mention capacity. Her only other comments on this years World cup series, have been a) gb were rubbish(coventry) and Tai Woffinden brilliant(after his heat win in the run offs). I need to find something she got wrong this week!!!!!!!. Help!!!!!!
  4. Not bothered who wins just hope the racing is good, and the weather does not cause too many problems or stop the meeting.

    The Future Of British Riders

Some tracks have no option for training, and quite often have only time to prepare a track just before a meeting . then shut down early, in case they lose there license. There are training tracks out there, Iwade(sittingbourne) and Eastbourne have there small track, Lots of good riders have come from there, Ed Kennett and Louis Bridger being only the latest to emerge from there. To me talent will come through, no matter how easy or how much money or resources is thrown at it. Tennis gets millions from the Wimbledon championship profits, and the FA put millions into there academy, and the lottery gives loads of dosh to athletes. I dont see any heroes or winners on a regular basis coming through Yes you will get the occasional winner come out of the pack, Henman, Murray in tennis, but they would have come through anyway. I dont think I know any Footballers who came through the Academy, Oh maybe Beckham? Don't get me wrong I think speedway should help youngsters to get started in the sport, but I don't feel that you can buy talent, after all they can train monkeys to do tricks. World beaters will emerge and succeed despite formal help, and maybe if given to much help they could be made worse.

    Former Crayford Riders

The Sainsbury at crayford is good for fresh salad etc, it has a Homebase adjunct to it. A very big car park which seems to always be busy. With this little napkin sized stadium as you depart from sainsbury, i question the supposed size of the dog track, and question the viability of a speedway circuit. Its only a ten to fifteen minute drive from where I live, but just not big enough for any kind of speedway with engines, Tuesdays at crayford sadly will never return. Sundays at sainsbury, unfortunately a different story What about paul woods, les rumsey, steve naylor, trevor barnwell, mick pither and of course Mr hackney , ie Barry Thomas, they all rode for the kestrels. My wife has still got a crayford teddy bear complete with body cover.

Tactical Ride / Tactical Substitutes Poll.

Noboby likes tactical replacement rides , unless your team are behind and your number 1 comes out and wins. Does it deter new spectators, there are so many other rules and regulations, ie heat leaders, reserves and riders averages. To make it difficult for newcomers unless they go with someone knows the answers. What else deters newcomers from coming again. Price of admission, speedway is generally cheaper than most Football teams, unless in lower leagues. Facilities, ie seating areas, refreshments, toilets, please note Eastbourne, they are cleaner now but you cant get in and out, either knock down the wall or widen it. So okay I've knocked it , but there are many things that are good, mostly the regular fans who even if you are sitting in thier favourite seat, will greet you and help you understand whats going on, and advise on where to go for refreshments and how to fill out the programme. My older brother first took me to speedway when i was about 7 or 8 years old, at the frying pan in New Cross. So what I hear you say, but if you have not been to see a live meeting recently, but rely on your news and views from the net. SEE IT LIVE, ITS STILL THE BEST INVESTMENT YOU CAN MAKE, WITHOUT LOSING YOUR INTEREST, THATS A PROMISE.GET COMMITTED.
