tape2tapevideo 0 Posted January 26, 2005 Yes, I think 847084 has explained the position re-an/a before h correctly. It used to be the case that a word beginning with h was always preceeded by an, but this has now fallen out of favour and it is generally the case that an would only be used where the h is silent. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> ok I will make sure I cover astings in our book correctly! norbold 7,098 Posted January 26, 2005 Of course, with us cockneys, what tends to happen is that the 'h' word drops the h and begins with n instead, as in a notel or a nistorian.....

Gemini 4,894 Posted January 27, 2005 (edited) HI GEMDidn't rain today Oh. Dear! I never thought you would look in here Addy. Much too young and beautiful for Years Gone By. Not surprised by Kevin's appearance though. I'm fairly sure hotel is actually an hotel Gem. Going by the explanation overleaf you've got to make sure you drop the "H" Kev. so as long as you say an otel you are correct. I'm getting the ang of this now. Gemini 4,894 Posted January 28, 2005 At least I've learnt a bit about when to use "an" and "a", although even that advice seems contradictory. I blame Kevin for saying it's an hotel. "We are going to book an hotel for the weekend." "We are going to book a hotel for the weekend." Just practising....
