Punch Up's

Recommended Posts

Barney Kennett - Canterbury

Kelvin Mullarkey - Rye House

I remember Barney having punch ups with Kelvin when Rye house visited . Later as team mates they were polite to each other!

Barney could take on all comers due to his size and strength, and the presence of Barney at a meeting meant there would be fireworks on and off the track ! Without Barney, the 70,s and early 80,s at Kingsmead would have been far less of the great spectacle it was !

I am of course a Barney Kennett fan and still have all the old photos, rosettes etc!!!

Starghost do you recall the date of the meeting as weren't there a few Oxford- Norwich meetings that season-NL, Britannia Shield? etc-and didn't teams meet twice home and twice away in the NL at that time.??

They sure did...

It's hard to believe we've reached nearly fifty posts on the subject of punch-ips and the name "Templeton" has no featured yet!

I was at the most remarkable punch-up in speedway history back in the 1970s at Rayleigh. The visiting Berwick team featured both Templeton brothers, Doug and Willie. Rayleigh had a Kiwi newcomer called Ivan Miller, who I think was a former scrambles champion.

Somewhere around heat 10 an over-exuberant Ivan Miller knocked Willie off on the second lap and the referee allowed the race to continue. As Miller came round the pits bend on lap 3 he found Doug, who had vaulted the safety fence, standing in mid-track waiting for him. Miller attempted to ride past him, but Doug threw himself at man and machine and wrestled him to the ground. Summary justice was then extracted.

In forty-odd years of watching speedway I've never seen anything quite like it, and I don't suppose I ever will again. I had a discussion a few years back about this incident with Dick Barrie who was also there; he tells me that they ended up the best of mates in the bar afterwards. I don't think Ivan Miller ever came back for a second British season though.

A serial offender was Shirra. Remember seeing him do the same thing to the Start Marshall at Poole.

I think that he was banned from speedway for a period as a result.

And i remember him getting locked up for the night by the local police

Ian's post reminds me of a "memorable" disagreement at Weymouth in 1974 when Eastbourne were the visitors. Kelvin Mullarkey went inside of Mike Sampson on the then 2nd bend with Mike coming off. On the next lap there was Mike waiting for Kelvin to come past and as he did so he just dragged him from his bike!

Kelvin was not one to let a little thing like being dragged from his bike when at full throttle bother him so he immediately "retaliated". They were parted and "escorted" back across the centre green with much shouting and scuffling by the two and their various helpers until they got back to the pits where things really kicked off with a general free for all involving anyone who wanted to join in!

From then on Eastbourne were always regarded as "the enemy" at the old Wessex and Mike could always expect a very hot reception from the Weymouth supporters.

The Templetons were a couple of my favourite riders, even though i hardly got to see them.During harvesting time i think they hardly done away meetings(?)

But there was the incident when Holta and Kasprzak clashed and then KK's brother and some of the team were on the track and attacking Rune while he was lying on the ground.Plus didn't T.Gollob attack Bajerski after Bajerski clashed with Jacek Gollob?

I remember a big punch up at a Hackney -v- Stoke match in the late 80's. I think Louis Carr and Gary Tagg were involved in an on-track incident and then all and sundry got involved!

Re Oxford v Norwich 1964

The teams met Home & Away in the Britannia Cup, National Trophy and National League. 6 matches in all.

The last match was on 27 August, in the League. This one featured the title fight "Bishop v Levai"

Oxford won all the trophies that season except the early season Easter Cup which Norwich won.

Only a few weeks after that night at Oxford Norwich were "wiped out by the builders"

Didn't James Cockle and his old man and a few mechanics go into the crowd at Plough Lane for a punch-up with Dons fans ?

Remember seeing Oxford and Swindon fans fighting at a local derby at Cowley in the 70s .
