But speedway fans will always rally around the indefensible, and thats why things will never get any better. Wake up a smell the coffee, Nicholls as poor as he has been this year is Ipswich's number 1, Danny King is Ipswich's number 4, and him and Bridger scored ONE point from SEVEN rides, the reason we are not in the final is as clear as day, but don't let your delusions hold you back. So are you saying that with Nicholls in the team we would have gone through? I think that the manager's plan to go with youth has worked to the extent that they now know what it takes to compete at the highest level. Some of tonight's team, but reallistically not all of them, will take the experience and go on to bigger and better things, I'm sure. Let's not kid ourselves we will not win the World Cup in a couple of years. A long hard road is ahead and this was a very small first step. But looking at teams like Sweden and Denmark tonight we do not have that far to catch up. Congratulations to Rob and the boys, you did your best and did not let anybody down. Personally I didn't think we'd do as well as we did, but it's a forward step for me rather than a backward one, and Jason Crump agrees with that, as he stated Monday and tonight. Eeeeerrmmmm ..........so we should also say that the Danes blew it but not using Bjarne in view of his experience / past track record / blah blah ?? Blooding the youngesters was a brave move ........IMHO a very good move and much better than using the "same old" just cos they've been around a bit and are someone's no. 1 (but riding well off form / below capabilities). The team did bloody well and we should all be very proud instead of moaning - we nearly got to the final FFS - much better than last year. Seems there is no pleasing some people. Nobody gave us a prayer tonight but the lads only lost out in the last few heats when a full strength Swedish team finally showed up. and before anyone comments,yes i too am gutted....................that we are second rate at everything I would much rather be a second rate team with promise than a second rate team with none, ie last year's side. Bridger and King were as abject as expected and Lyon's ridiculous policy cost us a final place Who would you have picked instead? Kennett was dreadful on Monday, and Nicholls obviously doesn't want to be involved after being dropped for the first meeting. Lyon came across as a cat in the headlights , particularly in the gate position fiasco Nonsense. His official FIM programme had the gates down as per the first running of the heat. And he is a bloke who keeps his cool rather than ranting and raving all over the place. Cool heads are needed in pressure situations. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
bluebee 199 Posted July 16, 2009 I have seen Scott Nicholls a number of times this season and he's been nowhere near as good as he was last year and what did he do then? Let's give credit where it is due: Lyons's strategy wasn't that far from being a big success. He's lfted expectations and given some of the younger riders useful experience. An out of form Nichoills is still better than a busting a gut King or Bridger at the moment. And to compare a precocious talent like Ward to the likes of King is frankly ridiculous! rabbit 1 Posted July 16, 2009 Battling performance that saw us right in it for much longer than I thought. I don't buy the 'rider x should've been picked' theory - you can't second guess what would've happened with a different set of riders and if you apply it to our team, you should do the same for the Danes and even the Swedes. Plenty of positives to take forward to next year, and thankfully a team all working together. Just a shame that Lewis never really go the chance to get going tonight...that I think is the difference between us being in the final and sitting here now doing the post-mortem. Forget Nicholls, had Lewis' head not dropped after his dodgy start, we might've picked up those vital couple of extra points. No blame attached to him, it's a team effort, but he'll learn from this and hopefully come back in 2010 a stronger rider at this level as with all the lads. The Danes did it a few years back and everyone took the mickey out of them being 'weak' initially - didn't do them any harm in the intervening years. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I agree that I do not think we will win the World Cup in the next 2 or 3 years. I also feel that Rob Lyon as a person is the correct man for the job. He seems to manage to get riders together and bond. Look at his role at Kings Lynn over the last few seasons. He has constantly managed to bring the best out of the riders he employs. There is fantastic team spirit at Kings Lynn, everyone gets on, they socialise together and they BOND. I believe this is one of the most important starting blocks to a successful team, as has been proved by Rob at KL. But Kings Lynn are only in the Premier League I hear you all shout - speedway riders are speedway riders whatever league they ride in, they are still only flesh and blood, whether they be a World Champion or a National League Reserve.
