Isle Of Wight Vs Scunthorpe

Recommended Posts

Taken from the Islanders Press Release announcing their recent signing of Ricky Scarborough (who rode yesterday at Kings Lynn for the Islanders):

Action begins at 7.30pm on Tuesday at Smallbrook Stadium, but fans are advised to be early as 4 times World Champion, Barry Briggs, comes to the Island on part of his UK 'Ride' to raise money for wheelchair bound Speedway Riders. Briggs aims to raise over £100,000 on 'The Ride' which started at Wembley Stadium and finishes at Cardiff Millenium in July at the British Speedway Grand Prix.

The former Southampton Rider, know to his fans worldwide as Briggo, rode for Saints in the early '60's and a big presence form the mainland is expected.

It is also armed forces day at Smallbrook next week when all members of the Forces currently holding a warrant card can obtain free admission.

Those travelling from the mainland, will also be able to get free travel from Wightlink and Vectis Bus to the Stadium as part of this 'thank you' to our serving Men and Women.

SCUNTHORPE: ISLE OF WIGHT V SAINTS (NL)

Tuesday June 29, 2010

THE Jotun Paints Scunthorpe Saints make the long journey to the Isle of Wight today to take on the Isle of Wight Islanders in a National League meeting and, not for the first time this season, their line-up could be termed makeshift.

With Luke Chessell on loan to Weymouth and Adam Wrathall out with a fractured leg the Saints have had to call in Newport’s Mark Jones to cover for number one, Mark ‘Buzz’ Burrows, who is on a holiday that was booked before he signed for the club. To make matters worse Benji Compton will not be travelling after getting an infection in a wound.

Coming into the line-up will be Richie Worrall, the twin brother of Steve Worrall who has recently been added to the Scorpions’ side. Richie, like his brother, was a Moto X rider and was competing at national level before recently deciding to switch to speedway. The Islanders, who currently sit two places below the Saints in the National League, have lost three of their four home league meetings have recently made a change to their line-up bringing in former Scorpion and Saint, Ricky Scarboro. He joins two other former Scunthorpe riders in their line-up with Nick Simmons, briefly a Scorpion in 2009, the club’s number one whilst Ben Hopwood has ridden for the Islanders since leaving the Saints at the end of 2008.

The Saints have suffered heavy defeats (60-32 in 2008 and 59-35 in 2009) on their previous two visits to the Smallbrook Stadium with the 385-metre track proving a daunting prospect for many. The meeting starts at 7.30pm and the Saints are in action twice more this week. On Friday they once again head to the South Coast with a trip to Weymouth before taking on the Rye House Cobras in the second part of a double-header meeting at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Sunday (5pm start). The meeting follows a Premier League meeting between the same two clubs.

The full line-ups for tonight’s meeting are expected to be (English unless stated):

Isle of Wight Islanders – 1. Nick Simmons, 2. Ricky Scarboro, 3.Danny Warwick, 4. Brendan Johnson, 5. Ben Hopwood, 6. Dean Felton, 7. Tom Hill

Jotun Paints Scunthorpe Scorpions – 1. Mark Jones (Australia), 2. Rider replacement for Benji Compton, 3. Scott Richardson, 4. Gary Irving, 5. Richie Worrall, 6. Steve Worrall, 7. Ashley Birks

Inclined to agree... IOW reserves =

Dean Felton - 40+ and had his first season riding in 1994

Tom Hill - 24 and first season riding in 2003 - although there are gaps in his career.

Perhaps reserves should be under 18 or in their first 2 season in Speedway...at least under the old grading system for this level of Speedway it couldn't happen...

Heat Results

Isle of Wight win toss, taking gates 1&3.

Heat 01: Jones, Simmons, Worrall, Scarboro, 2-4, 2-4, 70.4

Line Up: Nick Simmons, Ricky Scarboro, Mark Jones, R/R - Steven Worrall

Comments: Scunthorpe away from the tapes, but Simmons outside of S. Worrall on 3rd bend. Track a bit damp early on. Simmons close to Jones on last bend, but to no avail.

Sponsored by www.enjaydesigns.net

Heat 02: Hill, Birks, Felton, R Worrall, 4-2, 6-6, 72.7

Line Up: Dean Felton, Tom Hill, Richie Worrall, Ashley Birks

Comments: R Worrall away well, but Hill round him on 2nd bend, before Felton followed suit on outside of 3rd bend! R Worrall then dropped right off, leaving Birks to chase Felton, and he gets him on the last bend, with a great outside swoop!

Heat 03: Re-Run: Warwick, Johnson, 5-0, 11-6, 69.8

Line Up: Brendan Johnson, Danny Warwick, Scott Richardson, Gary Irving

Comments: Great start from Wanny on the inside, but Irving fell off, apparently on his own, so the race was stopped. Irving threw his hands up, but was excluded anyway.

Re-Run: Warwick away quickly again, and gone, leaving Richardson and Johnson to slug it out. Was a close battle, with Johnson possibly going through anyway, until Richardson retired on the home straight, 2nd time round to leave an easy 5-0 :)

Heat 04: S Worrall, Hill, R Worrall, Hopwood, 2-4, 13-10, 70.7

Line Up: Ben Hopwood, Tom Hill, Steven Worrall, Ashley Birks R Worrall

Comments: Birks excluded under 2 mins, replaced by R Worrall.

Good gate from Hill, but S Worrall just had the legs to keep him behind him. Hopwood outside of Hill on 2nd bend to try and get after S Worrall, but hit the fence and fell. Up and remounted to finish last, S Worall finishing clear. Slight excitement at end, and R Worrall had a sick bike, and just beat Hopwood to the line!

Heat 05: Warwick, Johnson, Jones, Irving, 5-1, 18-11, 69.9

Line Up: Brendan Johnson, Danny Warwick, Mark Jones, R/R - Gary Irving

Comments: Warwick away like a rocket, with Johnson squeezing under Jones along the back straight. Jones around outside on 3rd bend, but good defensive line kept him at bay. Tried it again on 3rd lap, and nearly put himself in stands on home straight! Irving a distant last.

Sponsored by Splod

Heat 06: Simmons, Birks, Scarboro, 4-2, 22-13 69.7

Line Up: Nick Simmons, Ricky Scarboro, Steven Worrall, Richie Worrall Ashley Birks

Comments: Reserve change in Yellow with Birks in for R Worrall.

Simmons got the jump and led into the back straight, with Scarboro at the back. But S Worrall locked up on 4th bend allowing him through, and then set about getting his place back. Packed up on bend 2, lap 4, though, with Scarboro pushing him all the way.

Heat 07: Re-Run: Hopwood, Felton, Richardson, Irving, 5-1, 27-14, 71.3

Line Up: Ben Hopwood, Dean Felton, Scott Richardson, Gary Irving

Comments: Felton the ringer left at the tapes, but Irving got (another) knock and fell off. Rerun with all 4.

Re-Run: Both islanders away, and almost tripping over each other down the back striaght, as Richardson and Irving toil in the dust. Richardson closer to Felton towards the end, 1 more lap and he would've had him.

Sponsored by Merlin

Heat 08: JONES, Birks, Scarboro, 1-8, 28-22, 71.3

Line Up: Ricky Scarboro, Tom Hill, R/R - Mark Jones, Ashley Birks

Comments: Mark Jones out on a Tactical on the R/R.

Birks with a flyer, soon joined by double points Jones. Scarboro going high and wide to try for second place, but just lacking the speed. Hill got fed up at the back and tried to overtake him, with his bike going bang causing him to retire, hope its not too serious.

Heat 09: Warwick, S Worrall, R Worrall, 3-3, 31-25, 71.7

Line Up: Brendan Johnson, Danny Warwick, Steven Worrall, Richie Worrall

Comments: Warwick with another smart gate into the lead, with Johnson going under S Worrall, before S Worrall went back under him on 3rd bend. Not sure about any contact, but Johnson went into the fence, before remounting for last. Johnson retired. S Worrall looking quick, but not as quick as Warwick! R Worrall looking slow.

Heat 10: Re-Run: Simmons, Richardson, Birks, 3-3, 34-28, 70.6

Line Up: Nick Simmons, Ricky Scarboro, Scott Richardson, Gary Irving Ashley Birks

Comments: Ashley Birks in for Gary Irving.

Scarboro with an awful gate, and Simmons was pushed to outside, very lucky not to fall, to put the Scorpions into a 5-1, but Scarboro went outside him on back straight, but coming onto the home straight, Scarboro picked up some drive and looped, and how the 2 riders behind him missed him is anybodies guess, bike cartwheeling down the track!! Up gingerly though, but race stopped, and he was excluded. 3 riders only.

Re-Run: Simmons with decent start, but Richardson pushed him wide all the way round the 1st and 2nd bends, Simmons keeping it wound on down the straightaway to take the lead (Ermolenko impression!) Easy 3-3.

Sponsored by

Heat 11: Hopwood, Richardson, Jones, Felton, 3-3, 37-31, 71.3

Line Up: Ben Hopwood, Dean Felton, Mark Jones, R/R - Scott Richardson

Comments: Abysmal gate from the islanders, but Hopwood is riding some terrific inside lines to first pass Jones, then Richardson in successive laps. I think Jones may have got a touch on the way through, but they shook hands afterwards, great ride from Hopwood, if only he could gate!!!

Sponsored by

Heat 12: Johnson, Richardson, Hill, 4-2, 41-33, 71.9

Line Up: Brendan Johnson, Tom Hill, Scott Richardson, Richie Worrall Ashley Birks

Comments: Ashley Birks in Yellow for Richie Worrall.

Even break, with Richardson getting the nod down the back straight. Johnson stormed round him lap 2, bend 2, before Hill got past Birks when he fell on 4th bend on his own. Then retired. 2-4 turned into a 4-2, hooray!

*** Interval ***

Heat 13: Hopwood, Simmons, Jones, S Worrall, 5-1, 46-34, 70.2

Line Up: Nick Simmons, Ben Hopwood, Mark Jones, Steven Worrall

Comments: Hopwood with a great gate around the outside, whilst Simmons clamps Jones on the inside, really good bend from the Island pair. They were more interested in fighting each other, than looking out for the scorpions!! 5-1.

Sponsored by Art and Stitch for all your sewing and art supplies www.artandstitch.co.uk

Heat 14: Warwick, Felton, BIRKS, Irving, 5-1, 51-35, 71.7

Line Up: Danny Warwick, Dean Felton, Gary Irving, Ashley Birks

Comments: Ashley Birks on a Tactical Ride.

Carbon copy of ht 13, as the islanders romp away, Felton tucking in nicely behind Warwick. No double points for Birks in this one.

Sponsored by

Heat 15: Warwick, Simmons, Richardson, 5-1, 56-36, 71.4

Line-up: Danny Warwick, Nick Simmons, Mark Jones, Scott Richardson

Comments: Scunthorpe won the toss taking gates 2&4.

Very close 1st bend, Warwick just getting the lead, with Simmons taking flak from the Scorpion pair, but coming out in second place behind Warwick. Jones falls on his own, 1st bend, lap 2, but clears the track, full max for Warwick!!! Jones up and ok.

I was there last night & it was good to see some smiling faces in the IOW pits.

TBH, the Saints looked on paper a very makeshift, even weak, side.

However, to be fair, they put up a good fight & if it were not for the three 5-1's at the end, the result would (obviously I guess!) have been much closeer.

Saying that, IOW never really looked like losing this one.

Good to see danny getting his max....the only time he ever looked in trouble was when they nearly dropped him giving him the bumps after heat 15!

I just want to comment on the "live scores updates" on this thread.

They sum up perfectly how the night went and look like an excellent description of events.

Well done to the team who put in so much effort to supply them.
