And not much about it, but Newport visit the Island, on what I believe is the Islanders final meeting of the season... Will be updates in the usual place. Any thoughts, comments, opinions, etc, or is that being overly optimistic?

Tony will return to action on Sunday in the home NT clash with Buxton so it's R/R for him . Aaron Baseby comes in for JWW at No. 6 for the Hornets

Newport winning the toss taking gates 1 & 3 in Heat 1.

 

Heat 01: Simmons, Kurtz, Priest, Felton, 3-3, 3-3, 69.1

Line Up: Paul Starke R/R - Nick Simmons, Dean Felton, Todd Kurtz, Luke Priest

Comments: Newport gate a 5-1, but Simmons is quickly past Priest on the back straight. Immediately onto the back of Kurtz, before hurtling around the outside of him on the 4th bend, lap 2. Superb. Simmons won by almost half a lap in the end!

Heat 02: Hill, Baseby, Resch, 4-2, 7-5, 73.7

Line Up: John Resch, Tom Hill, Aaron Baseby, Tom Young

Comments: Great gate from Resch, before Hill moves inside the Hornets to join him. Young fell, but remounted. Resch looked to have a problem down the back straight, and let Baseby through, before chasing him down again, strange. Young retired.

Heat 03: Warwick, Priest, Webster, Smethills, 3-3, 10-8, 71.4

Line Up: Danny Warwick, Lee Smethills, Tim Webster, Tony Atkin R/R - Luke Priest

Comments: Pretty even gate, but Warwick seems to get the drive coming out of the bend to lead, whilst Smethills struggles a bit. Riders seem to be a bit wary early on. From gate.

Heat 04: Simmons, Newman, Hill, 4-2, 14-10, 70.3

Line Up: Nick Simmons, Tom Hill, Kyle Newman, Tom Young

Comments: IoW again rubbish from the gate, conceding a 1-5, but are on a 4-2 by the end of the first lap, as Simmons again blasts round the outside of the Newport man on bend 4, moments ahead of Hill doing the same thing. Young retired soon after. Great moves from the I.o.W.

Heat 05: Warwick, Priest, Kurtz, Smethills, 3-3, 17-13, 71.4

Line Up: Danny Warwick, Lee Smethills, Todd Kurtz, Luke Priest

Comments: A rare event as Warwic gets outgated by Priest, but a little nudge gets him underneath and in front of him, before setting off into the distance. Smethills disappointing at the back though. From gate.

Heat 06: Re-Run: Newman, Felton, Baseby, 2-4, 19-17, 72.8

Line Up: Paul Starke R/R - Danny Warwick, Dean Felton, Kyle Newman, Aaron Baseby

Comments: Newman with an absolute flyer, which is rightly called back.

Re-Run: This time Warwick gets the break, and Felton wins a hard fought battle on the early part of the back straight for an Islanders 5-1, until Newman re-takes Felton on the back straight 2nd time round, just as Warwick retires from the lead!

Heat 07: Re-Run: Simmons, Resch, Baseby, 5-1, 24-18, 70.8

Line Up: Nick Simmons, John Resch, Tim Webster Aaron Baseby, Tony Atkin R/R - Tom Young

Comments: Simmons makes a gate in his weakest heat, but Resch is stuck at the back. Disaster for the Hornets as Young lost it going into the 3rd bend, causing Webster to lay it down and collide with Young. Yellow exc, to be rerun.

Update: Tractor out whilst Webster being checked over. Young up.

Update @ 8.34pm: Waiting on ambulances for both riders.

Update @ 8.46pm: Ambulances arrived and taking the unlucky Hornets to hospital. Best wishes to both; hope its nothing serious.

Re-Run: Young Excluded, Baseby in for Webster.

Good gate from the islanders into a 5-1, where they stayed.

Heat 08: Felton, Priest, Hill, Baseby, 4-2, 28-20, 72.6

Line Up: Dean Felton, Tom Hill, Luke Priest, Tom Young Aaron Baseby

Comments: Tassles (Hill) away well on the inside with plenty of elbows as well, but Felton and Priest go past on 3/4th bends.

Comments: No Baseby in Yellow; 3 riders only.

Smethills away well, with Warwick at the back. Newman gets past Smethills on back straight, as does Warwick on 4th bend. Warwick really flying into bends to catch Newman, but to no avail.

Comments: Islanders gate, but Newman spot a gap on the inside to charge through and romp away. From gate, spread out.

Comments: Simmons and Kurtz both rear off the start, Priest gets into first, but again Simmons simply flies around the outside of bend 4 to take the lead, brilliant stuff considering we have seen 2 riders off to hospital. Well clear by the chequered flag.

Heat 12: Re-Run: Warwick, Baseby, Hill, 4-2, 41-31, 73.3

Line Up: Danny Warwick, Tom Hill, Tim Webster, Aaron Baseby

Comments: No rider in white. Hill touches tapes, goes off 15m in re-run.

Re-Run: Warwick away well, too well for Hills liking as he leaves Baseby and Hill to it! Hill getting closer and closer, and gets past on the 4th bend, only to be pipped on the line by Baseby, good race.

Comments: Newman on a Tactical Ride.

Newman away with Simmons in hot pursuit. Simmons feints outside on bend 4, before cutting up the inside on bend 1, and going past on the inside of Newman on back straight, quite magnificent!

Fog now really starting to cover the 3rd bend!!!

Heat 14: Smethills, Baseby, Hill, 4-2, 48-38, 71.7

Line Up: Lee Smethills, John Resch Tom Hill, Tony Atkin R/R - Aaron Baseby, Tom Young

Comments: No rider in yellow.

Smethills gated, with Hill going wide, and Baseby splitting them. Close between Hill and Baseby going into 1/2nd bend 2nd time round, and Hill falls, but gets up to secure the 3rd point. Got his tassles dirty there!

Line-up: Danny Warwick, Nick Simmons, Luke Priest, Kyle Newman

Comments: IOW win toss taking gates 1&3. Fog cleared a little now.

Priest away well, but Simmons switches to outside to take the lead. Warwick round Priest as well on 4th bend, before Newman takes Priest on that bend next time round. Newman gettin close to Warwick, but Simmons is away and gone! Priest retired.

Before we begin tonight on this seasons final meeting for the Islanders, I'd just like to say its been fun updating most of the Isle of Wight home meetings this year, so thanks to Rusty for the updates and those people (that behaved ) who have joined me throughout the year.

 

Not a good sized crowd, sadly!

 

Dry day on the Island getting chillier tonight.. track is well watered.

 

Thanks to Rusty for the updates and well done on the Islanders for winning, and Newport for putting on a good effort with only 4 team members left. Hope Tim & Tom are OK.

 

And for this season, it's goodbye to the Islanders... Reminder for IOW fans that the end of season do is on Saturday October 9th.
