NEWPORT SPEEDWAY OFFICIAL MEDIA RELEASE

STRENGTHENED HORNETS ON VERGE OF PLAY-OFF FINAL

The Newport Hornets race the Bournemouth Buccaneers at Queensway Meadows this Sunday afternoon at 1pm in the second leg of the National League Play Off Semi-Final.

The Hornets defeated the Buccaneers in the first leg at Poole Speedway on October 6th by 49 points to 36 and will have the plus of Kyle Newman and Luke Priest returning to the line-up after their absence last Sunday with James White-Williams and Tom Young reverting to their normal reserve partnership. With Todd Kurtz required for the Newport Wasps Young Shield away leg at Rye House the same afternoon then former Newport Wasp Nick Simmons will guest for the young Aussie.

Despite that home reverse the Buccaneers have a strong heat leader trio in Jay Herne, James Brundle and Mark Baseby. Jay is the son of former 1970s Wasps star Phil Herne and has recovered well from serious back injuries sustained at Queensway Meadows in March while Brundle has previous Premier League experience with Kings Lynn and also rode for Eastbourne in the Elite League.

The overall winner of this semi-final will meet the winners of the Buxton Hitmen versus Dudley Heathens clash in the other semi-final for the National League title itself.

Commented Laurence Rogers who will take charge of the Hornets with Kevin Brown away with the Wasps at Rye House: 'We were only caught out last week at home against Kings Lynn because of the unavoidable absence of several riders. We don't have that problem this week plus Nick Simmons knows his way around our circuit and will prove an adequate cover for Todd Kurtz. We are on the verge of an appearance in the Play Off Final and we deserve it after the season we have enjoyed. We are determined not to let the Buccaneers off the hook.'

I understand that the Buccs protest against the Hornets lineup in the 1st leg has been upheld, yet the points not adjusted.

Can anyone confirm?

Er, can this be run past us again...

The appeal that Messrs Baseby junior and Birks were NOT eligible to ride for the Hornets in leg one was upheld but no points adjustment was made..?!

How would that make even the slightest sense even in the alternative universe of the Speedway National League...!!!

Norman Wisdom may sadly have passed away ( ) but British comedy is still clearly alive and kicking!!!

Just trying to remember the result of the investigation into the Tyson Nelson debacle...a similar situation...

Not sure whether the points were eventually deducted after the decision...
