Thirteen amateur meetings announced

Scunthorpe Speedway is once again leading the way in rider development with the announcement of thirteen amateur meeting dates. The dates announced, which embrace all ages and abilities allow riders to progress through the ranks, ensure at least one meeting is planned for every month through to the start of the 2013 season.

The Scunthorpe track already offers the most track time in the country with their weekly winter practice sessions and last week they announced two Midland Development League sides will run out of the Eddie Wright Raceway and there will be youth races in every second half they run during the 2012 season.

The latest announcement will take the number of amateur meetings the club has organised since January 2008 to seventy-nine and Promoter Rob Godfrey feels it is the way forward for the club.

“We have a stadium that needs using as much as possible. I’m told we’re going to be heading towards two hundred events here this year which is great. We’re so lucky to have so many volunteers who organise the events but that is the strength of the club and it is great to see riders coming through the ranks and making it in the sport.

“Of course we are trying to put a few coffers in the pot but we are providing a great service to the sport. There are very few riders coming into the National League who haven’t entered our amateur meetings. I think that much more than second halves it is the way into league racing.

“You only have to look at last weekend’s meeting. We had Danny Halsey, Stefan Nielsen, Tom Young and Darryl Ritchings who are established in the National League. The two meetings before that we had Gary Irving plus Steve and Richie Worrall and then we have riders like Oliver Greenwood, Danny Phillips, Josh Bates, Lewis Rose, Liam Carr, Lloyd Barrett and David Holt who are all teenagers who either have or are close to breaking into the National League. It is really surprising that some riders, who complain about not getting National League places, aren’t riding in these meetings because the results are there for all to see”.

“The meeting standard is as good as the National League so riders don’t have to win to impress. There were some good riders towards the bottom of the field last week and they’re learning so much. You can see riders with potential and I honestly don’t think riders are going to get National League places unless they are doing well in amateur meetings like this. We’re not going to give any rider a place without seeing how they ride in these meetings so they just need to get down here, ride in the meetings and develop into riders who are worth team spots. Second halves and practices are all well and good but the abilities can be too varied.

“It was the best thing we ever did was to listen to one of our fans, Andy Harrison, and start running these meetings. We will also run one or two team meetings over the year but our Summer Championships and the Winter Series are where the real competition is, meeting after meeting”.

The thirteen dates for amateur meetings at Scunthorpe, following the already organised Winter Series meeting on Saturday 17th March, are:

Sunday 15th April

Sunday 13th May

Sunday 17th June

Sunday 8th July

Sunday 5th August

Sunday 9th September

Sunday 7th October

Saturday 10th November

Saturday 8th December

2013

Saturday 5th January

Saturday 26th January

Saturday 16th February

Sunday 17th March

Steady on Chris. Bizarrely it sounds like most meetings coincide with the British Youth Championship rounds. There may be a need to tweak some of the dates.

Unfortunately, just a week after announcing the dates for thirteen amateur meetings there is a need to amend the dates of three. Two of the changes are because of clashes with the British Youth Championship.

The amended dates are:

Sunday 22nd April replaces Sunday 15th April

Saturday 16th June replaces Sunday 17th June

Saturday 8th September replaces Sunday 9th September

Simon - I do work closely with Linda at STR to try and avoid clashes but we both have lots of restrictions and this year wwe seemed to have more problems. We have a plan in place to, hopefully, reduce the clashes in 2013.
