Followers of cycle speedway are mourning the passing of legendary Mancunian and former national champion Derek Garnett. A true gentleman who succumbed to a long illness last Monday. Condolences to family and friends.

That is really sad news. Being in the Manchester league Mid-late 1960’s, I raced against Derek many times (losing the majority of them). A good team man who will have helped many younger riders to fulfil their ambitions, he was that sort of guy. A brilliant individual rider as well,  must have won almost everything in his time.

Any one know when Derek finally retired?  Or did he.

Very sad news...

My lad rode with Ben, Derek's grandson, for a few years for Stockport..

RIP Derek....
