Lee Complin

Recommended Posts

  1. Wow have not seen that footage of the Gary Stead meeting, all the best for the future Lee.
  2. Lee said in the SS that he was in debt to the sum of £5k and together with the injuries could not carry on, also said someting needed to be done to reduce the costs in Speedway as a lot of tracks were suffering financially.

Not much further than he actually did. He was an entertainer and as many have already stated he delivered that and more.

He'll be a miss and hard to replace

He probably would have been replaced at Berwick next season hopefully by Robin Aspergren. Still wish him luck in his retirement, was really good around Berwick , not so good on many away tracks.

A very entertaining rider when on form, a joy to watch.

When he first returned I thought if he hadn't of packed in for 5 years, he would of been a superstar although now I am not so sure.

Seemed to be the type of rider who was superb on a big deep track but often found wanting away from home apart from the odd meeting.

Will never forget the 19 points he got at Newport in 2007 (?) guesting for Edinburgh at reserve for Wethers who convieniently injured himself somewhere the night before despite completing all his rides, it was well known Wethers hated Newport.

Good luck in your retirement.

A real shame as he was always a rider I looked forward to seeing. Couldn't gate for toffee but never knew when he was beaten. Was often the most entertaining rider from the away ranks at Brough. He didn't mind a bit of dirt.

Apart from Newcastle, Sheffield, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stoke, Newport, Birmingham, Hull, Redcar…. He wasn’t good on away tracks.

His problem on away track wasn’t that he wasn’t good, he just lacked consistency on them.

Complin is made out to be a novice around some places, he wasn’t, he could score 4 in a meeting, but have been involved in every race he was in and about 10 yards away from scoring 13, he was just that kind of rider.

Complin would have been a decent EL heat leader had it not been for his first retirement and away from track incidents IMO. He was the absolute dogs bollocks when he first started at Sheffield.

Dont agree.

Seen Complin at Newport look terrible at the back never in contention, and have read many posts on here over the years stating the same from fans of other teams.

Whilst at Berwick in particular I imagine the gulf between his home/away average was one of the biggest in the league.

An entertainer, decent enough guy but his away form was never going to see him become the full package.

He almost joined Newport in 2009 when the Malletts took over but we went with Lemon instead

I think if more tracks had been prepared with a bit more dirt on them(as they should be IMO) Lee would have been a real top performer everwhere.Great entertainer.

A 4pt score away from home is a 4pt score away from, being beat by 10 yards or 10 miles all means the same, its perfectly true to say Coplins scores away from home bare no comparison to his scores at Berwick, but that should not take anything away from the fact that entertainers like Complin are a dying breed in speedway these days and the sport is all the poorer for it.

You can use the excuse he should of scored more a couple of times but over the course of a career like Complins then i think its fair to say he would only score 4 as thats all he was capable of.

If that was the case, then Berwick have a ready made replacement in Klaus Jakobsen.

Whether Complin was at the front or at the back, there was always the possibility of some entertainment.

Rntertainment was / is the point of being there after all. Complin will be a big miss.

We were spoiled when Lee Complin rode for Stoke, Complin and Barker made a formidable pair. PL heatleader was probably as far as he could afford to go, which was a shame as he could have been up there with the EL 6/7 pointers on the right machinery, IMO.

The “he could score 4 thing” wasn’t to be taken literally but as always someone takes things a tad too seriously….

To put it another way…

You can also read and see posts where he has turned in riders at Birmingham and Newcastle against guys like Robson, Lemon and Lyons and passed Lindgren from the back at Sheffield.

So he was capable of not only challenging, but pulling of the spectacular, so it suggest an inconsistency in performance.

His away form wasn’t the same as his Berwick form, that’s natural, very few riders score 9.50 averages both home and away, that being said I will take a guy who can score 13 and 15 at home most weeks every time.

Even with his “home/away” spilt, he still turned in paid 16 scores at places like Sheffield and Newcastle this year, 13 at Leicester last year, and 7+ around Rye Ipswich, Edinburgh and Glasgow this season, looking back further there is the 19 at Newport, and a further 15 point maximum to go with that when guesting for Berwick.

That’s before you even go into his early form for Sheffield, some of his performances for Stoke etc.

Its perfectly true to say Lee Complin, at one time or another has scored a barrel load of points and produced rides folks will talk about in 10 years time around most tracks in the country.
