Dragons - 21st July

Recommended Posts

The Dragons Speedway Club are staging a meeting at King's Lynn tomorrow, with a start time of 1.00pm. If it's half as entertaining as the Southern Track Riders meeting held at the same venue 2-weeks ago, then no one will leave Norfolk disappointed. Admission is free, with a full match programme available, not just a race-card. I understand that there is quite a large contingent travelling up from Kent to share in the pleasures with us locals.

Myself, BFC and Canterbury Dick will be there! For BFC and I, that makes three amateur meetings in six days - the STRA on the IOW on Tuesday, the Ride 'n Slide Dayz Amateur Champs at Lakeside last night and now the Dragons at Saddlebow tomorrow.

A little piece of nostalgia came to the Norfolk Arena in King's Lynn this afternoon, with four now sadly defunct teams taking to the track in a splendid double-header.

The main event saw the Wembley 'Lions' fight out a humdinger of a match against the White City 'Rebels'

with former Twin Towers side running out 59-51 winners.

Giving support was another tasty clash between Crayford 'Kestrels' and Exeter 'Falcons', in which the Devon side emerged victorious to the tune of 39-32.

Main talking point amongst the officials in the box was the non-appearance of self-confessed Crayford fan 'Parsloes' in support of his beloved Kestrels, totally unforgivable we all agreed!!!

It's nice to see the old team names again. But apart from that bit of nostalgia there's no actual link, so far as I can see, with these famous old teams.

Should there have been in then in this meeting for members of the Dragons Amateur Speedway Club?

Well I just wonder why these club/team names are used like this - no actual link to the original clubs or the areas they represented. Will we soon be seeing Stamford Bridge versus High Beech in this type of racing?

I don't detract anything from those who participate in these meetings and wish them as organsiers and riders every success - but surely using old club names has no creditable value?

Is their any reason why it should have any creditable value 'gustix' any more so than a recent amateur team event involving teams named "Full Throttle", "Spinning Sprockets", "Whizzy Wheels" and "The Clutchplates" ?

My reason for disliking the use of the names of great old teams in "amateur racing" is because I think it demeans the status and prestige they achieved in the sport.

Fair enough but as an ex-chairman of the Crayford Speedway Supporters club, and having been present at many meetings at both Exeter and White City plus having attended many World Finals at Wembley, I personally don't think it's wrong keeping alive memories of these clubs in this way especially given the quality of racing I've witnessed at this and many other amateur meetings.

Yep, I'm with you on that Bryn, although I do respect the thoughts of Gustix too. Stamford Bridge v High Beech.......what a great idea ;)

I would again emphasise, as I said in my original Post, "I don't detract anything from those who participate in these meetings and wish them as organsiers and riders every success."

It's just that I have misgivings at the names of famous old clubs used in this way. Does their use actually keep or bring back memories for modern supporters attending these meetings or are they just names for teams to them?

I fully accept that you personally have the misgivings you've referred to 'gustix' but others, including myself and, no doubt, the club organisers who named the sides, have no such misgivings.

I personally enjoy watching speedway at ALL levels starting with training schools and moving on up from there, and at Amateur Club level feel it is totally inconsequential as to what names are given to sides in any team events organised by them.

Amateur speedway gives the opportunity to riders of various ages and ability to take to the tracks that the clubs hire to stage their meetings and enjoy racing on them.

One worrying aspect for myself though is the realisation that the ageing process has well and truly caught up with me having recently seen, out on track racing bikes at either or both amateur and National League level, the likes of Arron Mogridge, Connor Coles, Kelsey Dugard, Mark Bibby etc., etc who were just a glint in their fathers eyes when I witnessed them from start to finish of their own careers!

I know the feeling: my memories go back to April 1946 at New Cross. I wouldn't try to make a count on father-son careers that I have seen. Age is catching up fast with me these days!

Like you, I DO ENJOY "development speedway" which started with the National League Division Junior League in 1949, and progressed through the days from 1954-59 with the old Southern Area League. Then there was the Conference League period at Wimbledon from 2002-05.

This class of race deserves all the encouragement it can get.
