MDL

The second staging of the Midland Development League Riders’ Championship at Leicester was another success with a top class night of racing. Stoke’s Shaun Tedham recovered from a last race to fall in the qualifying heats to take the title after Belle Vue’s Max Clegg had crashed out in the Final and Coventry’s James Shanes unable to avoid him. Clegg hurt his shoulder whilst Shanes suffered a hand and knee injury and a bent bike which all but lost him his chance in the re-run.

Kings Lynn’s Connor Mountain topped the qualifying scores with 13 with Clegg and Shanes on 12 apiece. Coventry’s Ryan Terry-Daley was fourth highest scorer on 10 with Redcar’s Danny Phillips and Shaun Tedham on 9. Three riders tied on 8 with Kings Lynn’s Adam Kirby missing out on a semi-final spot on countback with Castleford’s Nathan Greaves and Long Eaton’s Jez Pestell pipping him for a spot in the top eight.

Semi-Final one was a hard fought battle with Phillips and Shanes taking the honours whilst in the second semi Clegg and Tedham ensured their spots in the Grand Final.

The first staging of the Final saw all four gunning for glory with not much between them before Clegg fell .

In the re-run Tedham shot past Phillips and held on for the win with the battered and bruised Shanes settling for third.

Guests of honour Peter and Les Collins handed out the highly impressive hand carved trophies kindly made and supplied by Mick Chapman Trophies of Ashford Kent.

Les had earlier taken to the track along with son Aiden in two Formula2 demo races that created a lot of interest.

The young guns were also well represented by four 125cc racers in the Thompson twins , Dan and Joe along with Jamie Halder and Jordan Jenkins.

MDL Co-ordinator Kelvin Lapworth was brimming with pride after the event , “ what a great night again. The fans were treated to some superb racing and all the lads did themselves and their clubs proud. Our second staging of the MDLRC was highly successful and we must thank the Leicester promotion and staff for hosting the meeting again.”

“ We once again had some superb sponsorship for the event which Laurence Rogers worked so hard in obtaining and we must thank all the race and rider sponsors along with the main sponsors who supported us. Dave Roscoe kindly supplied every rider with their methanol whilst Nick Mallett provided the body colours though TNM Designs. Team KP –The Sliding Sisters gave a generous sponsorship that covered the rider medals , a race sponsorship and the prizes on the Final. The Sliding Sisters are twins Francesca and Hannah Kirtley-Paine who ride in amateur meetings and training schools and a big thank you to them and their father Gary for their support. Gary Drinkwater at City Gearboxes sponsored the 125cc lads and all riders from all this backing were presented with vouchers to spend on the Cov-Comp spares van.”

I thought it was probably the most entertaining speedway I have seen at BP in one meeting. Often such meetings are dominated by one or two riders, but all of the semi-finalists and one or two others had a realistic chance of getting onto the rostrum or even winning. There were several exciting races as the riders pushed themselves to the limit and beyond in some cases, with some remarkable bike control on display at times. A few spills are inevitable in a meeting like this, but they obviously came from genuine attempts to try just a bit too hard. It all adds to the entertainment, provided everyone walks away of course.

Shame more people don't take an interest in this level of racing Tom , Leicester fans usually stay in fair numbers , but most other places there's little interest . the initial premise has got lost a little along the way and the rule book such as it is ,has far too many Loopholes . but in general I would say the midland league has been a success , the list of riders who have gained team places on the strength of their MDL exposure is getting longer . if it were not for curfews wet weather and a few reluctant referees and promoters It would almost be like the training academies of other sports , money of course ruins everything but it would be nice if a big league sponsor could be found to give all the lads a little bit of help .

Seems to me that ongoing help is the next step. Leagues such as the MDL encourage young riders and give them excellent initial opportunities, but when a rider shows the ability to go further it seems to me he is left to develop his own skills and is put into so many meetings at varying levels that he burns himself out or gets badly injured. At least 10 of those MDL final riders would surely benefit from a structured development programme that could take them beyond MDL level. It would need sponsorship to set up some type of academy, and the right ex-riders to pass on the skills, but the benefits would be quick and meaningful. Maybe even link up with other countries such as Denmark to share the facilities and development opportunities?

that is what Jan O Pedersen is attempting to do. But to make it work it needs support and financing ...but the take up on membership for the Academy has been slow ....which is a great pity as Jan O has so much to offer and is willing to do it

maybe jano could teach these riders how to lay a bike down, then maybe your precious mr shanes could have avoided a bent bike and a swollen hand.....what a shame for max clegg after his last four rides he was the quickest rider for sure, but well done to shaun for the win,and to all riders that took part, really enjoyed the whole meeting.
