£40 ON the books. 'Cash in hand' back-handers OFF the books.

Seriously, what world do you live in pal?

signing a contract for £40 a point does not mean he can't have "sponsors" , case re-opened !

But he had to ride where ever he was drafted for £40 a point. Its ok saying sponsors and brown envelopes but why would anyone pay their NL draft rider more? He's already signed his contract.

Depends if Coventry wanted him and if he wanted to ride at Coventry. If the answer to both were yes, then he could have entered the draft knowing where he would be selected and having already agreed his finances.

Not saying either answer would be yes, but it is the scenario where the extras would be relevant.

More relevant though, I doubt many riders will stay with their EL team if they are earning just £120 a match. Whilst we may argue that's a reasonable guarantee, and with no costs isn't a bad earner for a youngster, it's the associated expenses of a speedway rider that is the issue. How many matches would it take to replace a blown motor in a reserve's first heat of the season?

Is there a job where the income per week, ability to work (e.g. injury), temporary unemployment (e.g. team reshuffles), weekly equipment costs and unexpected costs (e.g. new motors) are so varied?

I'd suspect many riders would ride for far less (including for free - especially in the lower divisions) if there were no costs associated to their job, especially the unexpected costs.

Do you imagine that blown motors don't occur in NL or PL matches ? The other side of your argument is that if a motor is blown in a NL/PL match the extra income from the EL will be very handy in replacing it. Add to that the experience gained on set-ups, etc from riding in the EL is likely to have a beneficial knock-on effect in the points scored (and therefore money earned) in the lower leagues..

The way I see it any fiddle (if there even is one planned) can only happen if the collective allow it.

Choices have to be from a certain position off the allocated list.

If the rider isnt on the list he isnt an option or if he isnt low enough in the ranking he isnt an option.

Be strong with the list and there can be no manipulation anyway even if desired.

No, but there are plenty of hobbies or semi professional sports like that. Merely owning a bike doesn't give a rider the right to earn a living from it.

These are young kids and it could be a valuable opportunity to progress.

In its current position speedway, for all but the very top riders, should be semi pro, and at the very lower end just an expensive hobby

Most riders including Nigel Boocock had jobs outside of speedway in the 60s 70s and went to meetings with one bike on the back of there car plus a track spare at the track maintained by the promoter riders need to get realistic

Plenty of riders have jobs now. Be interesting to see what the fans on here would say if a rider continually turned up with one cheap bike and expected to borrow one whenever he had problems, perhaps it's the fans not the riders that need to get realistic!

Are you saying that Nigel's bike was cheap I know he rode some rubbish some times but he was one of the top half dozen riders in the world at that time they didn't borrow bikes they used the track spare as it was called.Fundin Briggs Craven etc all had one bike at the time

Sounds like Matt Ford is already thinking how he can fiddle the reserve berths and dump Lee Smart. ...Robert Lambert in?

From Bournemouth Echo.

"However, Ford revealed the makeup of Poole's tail end could yet change, depending on Smart's availability.

Ford added: 'I have yet to speak to Lee and we need to discuss the balance of his commitments. The reserve system is new to everybody and there might be some teething problems.

There are one or two riders still about so we will see what the next few weeks bring.'"

You get sadder by the day Leslie. Thats correct its exactly what it says on the Tin, reguardless how your warped mind reads into it..

Are you guys not forgetting something.........Robert Lambert does not even come in to the equation yet as he is not 16 til later in the year which makes him ineligible to ride EL and PL anyway............

I am in no doubt, even at this early stage , that Lamberts immediate future has already been decided. And Matt Ford, with the biggest pot of gold, his twisted political antics or his rule bending, had no relevance on that decision at all.

Would have thought R.Lambert could only replace Newman both being in the top grade of the riders .. I presume Lambert will be available after his birthday when he is old enough to ride..Then watch the scramble for his signature,,Who has the biggest cheque book,???

Nothing new there!!

Reading the Speedway Star interview it is clear he will be in the EL in a 1-5 next season.

Poole must be favourites, unless he is sticking to his Kings Lynn roots of this season.

If the Stars sign him then they are already looking like favourites with the best 2 reserves as well.
