So name these stadiums with the requisite facilities, You'll be wanting 12 of them spread over several countries and given the attendance at the likes of Copenhagen, Gothenburg and Cardiff some of them will need to handle that sort of crowd size.

Interesting to see the interview with Jason Crump who was commenting on a track he admitted he hadn't seen, but the bit about transponders was well made. Speedway must be just about the only motor sport in the 21st century that doesn't use transponders, and whilst Philippe has in the past tried to convince that the cost of these is prohibitively expensive, that's frankly a load of cobblers.

 

 

Name 1 benefit transponders would bring to speedway?

 

From the start? yes they could do away with tapes and use lights and they could determine false starts, well we have seen where that leads.

 

For the finish ? Unnecessary, speedway is rarely, if ever so close as to not be able to be split by a slo mo replay

 

For race times ? yes but speedway doesnt have qualifying determined by lap times and race times are more of an interest than a neccessity so totally pointless.

Here is a list of the worlds speedway tracks, if they can't pick the tracks that are suitable out of these to stage a GP then there is something wrong. So why do they keep struggling to put on a good show at the tempory tracks. Can,t say I have seen one good meeting on any of the tempory tracks they all start to break up to soon. They just don't have enough time to bed down, with hardly any racing on them before hand bar a few practice laps

The truth is that very very few tracks/arenas in Sweden can accommodate a Grand Prix. Eskilstuna have the grand stand

capacity but not the car park capacity anymore. I also doubt that Smederna would be interested in trying again since

the last time they had a GP, the club went bankrupt a few years later.They also had very poor attendance at last

year's Speedway best pairs cup .

 

Vetlanda have the facilties but the track is not particularly good and it is also way to close to Målilla.

Possibly Kumla but let's see first how well their EuroCh. round goes before giving them a GP.

 

A GP also requires more then a good track, grand stand capacity, car parking capacity, generally good facilities...

Any old track won't do. It have to be of fairly good standard.

That list has probably not been updated for at least 10 years - I know because I compiled the original version back in the 90s.

 

There probably are still sufficient permanent speedway venues around to host GPs, most of which wouldn't need stadia more than 15-20K. The problem of course, is that BSI want to extract licence fees from the venues, and most tourist boards are not interested in supporting events held in the middle of fields and forests.

I really don't see the point of having a stadium that can seat 15,000 spectators, if the meeting is a total farce and has to finish before the end of the meeting. Far better to have the meeting in a stadium that has a proven track record, than to have a super glorified 15,000 seater one, with a covered roof, with the pits at the side of the track and no one can hear anything because of the noise, plus gates that fail to work.

Give me a stadium, that gives good racing and a posative to all the points above. For the sake of a few thousand less seats.

If they keep putting on meeting like the one at Warsaw, then they won't need a stadium, with any seating, because no one will bother to go to see the GP's any longer.

 

But it’s not a few thousand less seats, in this case a 15000 seater would have been 40000 less seats. If you got rid of Cardiff you’d drop from 40000 to what – can’t imagine any British track holds more than 6000? There simply are not sufficient permanent tracks with large stadium capacity.

You must have been delighted then when Wembley was lost to speedway, and instead the World Final’s could be held at a permaennt track at Odsal. Only around a 50k drop off in crowds too.

 

OR maybe there is something about holding meetings in world class arenas, with huge crowds – perhaps why so many name the 81 World Final as their favourite meeting, despite the fact that the racing at Odsal in 90 was better?

 

Using world class stadiums is the way to go, and temporary tracks have shown they can produce top racing . The issue at Warsaw wasn’t the track – it was the combination of track, allowing a full meetings worth of practice to be held on said track on the morning of the meeting, the tapes failure (and lack of backup) and inept officiating. If everything else had been ok, the meeting would have completed despite the track, and we’d have been talking about what a success the event was despite a somewhat dodgy surface.

Western Springs is a car speedway track, but apparently that surface is totally unsuitable for bike speedway so it needed totally re-laying at a pretty huge cost (and then converting back afterwards) - one of the reasons Bill Buckley lost so much money! I think Western Springs definitely belongs in the "temporary trck" category, and produced good racing 2 out of 3 years, with the 2014 GP being excellent (2013 was very poor bar a couple of decent races). It;s a super venue, a shame that Auckland council seem intent on driving speedway out, I think 2017 will be the end of motorsport at the Springs, as the council seemingly aim to destryo both motorsport and Rugby League in Auckland.
