COVENTRY are delighted to confirm the return of City Gearboxes as title sponsors of their National League team for the coming season.

City Gearboxes (Coventry) Ltd have backed the Storm since their inception in 2013, with owner Gary Drinkwater and wife Lorraine offering major support to the riders and the club.

Gary began his involvement in speedway with sponsorship in the Midland Development League, where Coventry also field a team after senior matches at Brandon, and Lorraine is in charge of the stadium Track Shop.

Gary had been in talks with club owner Mick Horton over the last few months and he was very honoured to be asked by Mick once again to have the team of his choosing, along with help from Team Manager Laurence Rogers.

Gary said: “It’s great to have been able to build a team with some of the 2015 team members, and also to be using Coventry assets.

“Being part of the STORM is like an extension to our family. Our priority, as it always has been, is to ensure that these youngsters have all the support that they need to be able to do what they love – SPEEDWAY!

“We hope that our support, not just financial, helps them towards achieving their goals.

“The lads are a great bunch, and Lorraine and I both look forward to an action-packed season ahead.”

Gary and Lorraine also would like to thank all the fans that support TEAM STORM and we look forward to seeing you all again in March.

The City Gearboxes Storm are likely to race their first match at Brandon on Easter Monday, March 28, and they will be on track along with the senior team at Press and Practice on Friday March 11.

Great news for the Storm

COVENTY Storm will open their season with home matches against the top two clubs from last year’s National League.

The City Gearboxes Storm will be in action at Brandon on Easter Monday, March 28 (4pm start) when 2015 runners-up Eastbourne provide the opposition.

And then defending champions Birmingham visit on Friday April 15 on a busy weekend which also includes Coventry’s first trip to the new National Speedway Stadium to face Belle Vue the following evening.

Last year, a combination of circumstances meant the Storm did not race a home league fixture until mid-July – but this season’s fixture list provides much greater continuity of racing.

The Storm are competing in a 12-team National League – with the top four advancing to the play-offs – and they will also face a Knockout Cup quarter-final against the winners of the Kent/Isle of Wight first-round tie.

And Coventry stage one of the prestige events of the season, the National League Fours, at Brandon on Sunday August 14 which will feature eight clubs including the Storm.

With Knuckey, Carr and Halder now sadly all out for a while with broken bones, will Coventry look at bringing in riders to replace them for the foreseeable future or use guests for the next 4-6 weeks?

Are Sarjeant, Stefan or Bates averages too high to ride NL?

Sarjeant is too high, Stefan was almost signed by Eastbourne but Plymouth re opened making it not allowed by the silly rules. I reckon Bates can though. Richard Andrews would have been available but I think he's still got wrist problems. What about Daniel spiller he wasn't allowed over until June because of final exams which are now finished... Bates' average is too high also and he's injured anyway.

Bates is due back from injury next week. How did he ride for Birmingham last year?

Spiller would be a very good option

His PL average was lower than it is now. It was around 4.2 then or something like that. He's on 5.86 now.

JAMIE Halder's injury from Mildenhall yesterday has been confirmed as a fracture to his arm.

The break is to the radius bone at the elbow. His wrist is not broken as originally thought, but it was the force of landing on the wrist which caused the break.

Jamie is likely to be facing around four weeks out of action, and we wish him well for his recovery.

An update on Martin Knuckey, who was due for surgery to his broken leg on Monday, will be provided as soon as we can.

Meanwhile there is better news on Liam Carr, who came through a practice session on Saturday after his recent scaphoid injury, and he now expects to make a racing comeback for Berwick this weekend.

His PL average was lower than it is now. It was around 4.2 then or something like that. He's on 5.86 now.

Thanks. What is the average limit then for a PL rider to ride NL? 👍🏻 Edited by mdmc82

I think it's now 4.50 if you start the season with a PL team and 6.00 if you don't start the season without a PL team (so someone like Morris can stay in the NL & DU). So Bates, Nielsen etc would fall into the first category.

Thanks. So if Sarjeant had signed before 1st June he would fit as his PL average is 4.41 (goes to 4.58 after) although no time really now.

Lewis Rose would have possibly fit.

I thought it was if you had a NL average higher than the converted PL average you couldn't ride
