Top 20 Riders In The World 2016

Recommended Posts

Back with updated ranking system, my view on top 20 riders in the world for 2016 to date. Takes into account performances across all major competitions (top flight domestic leagues - top 2 for Poland, Sweden and UK), GPs and qualifiers, SWC, National finals, SEC Euro champs):

1 Tai Woffinden 9.96 2 Greg Hancock 9.72 3 Patryk Dudek 9.24 4 Jason Doyle 9.19 5 Grigoriy Laguta 8.85 6 Bartosz Zmarzlik 8.58 7 Krzysztof Kasprzak 8.51 8 Emil Sajfutdinov 8.45 9 Martin Smolinski 8.42 10 Niels-Kristian Iversen 8.39 11 Piotr Pawlicki 8.35 12 Antonio Lindbäck 8.33 13 Chris Holder 8.29 14 Andreas Jonsson 8.13 15 Artem Laguta 7.80 16 Joonas Kylmäkorpi 7.75 17 Tomasz Gollob 7.72 18 Piotr Protasiewicz 7.71 19 Matej Zagar 7.71 20 Nicki Pedersen 7.65

No surprises at the top. Only surprise inclusions in the top 20 are Smolinski (who is an anomaly) and Gollob.

GP riders just outside the top 20 include Lindgren (22nd) and Magic (24th). Harris is the lowest ranked GP rider in 69th. Danny King the best Brit (apart from Tai) in 33rd ahead of Cook in 37th. Max Fricke the highest of the riders currently contesting the u21 world champs, in 31st.

I wouldn`t call Smolinski an anomaly- I would call it a mistake. He doesn`t ride any meaningful leagues nor the SEC, so I`m struggling to think of anything he has going for him. Are you sure the martin you meant wasn`t Vaculik ;)

Ranking for smoli comes from bundesliga, swc and sec/gp qualifiers. Take out the bundlesliga and he still ranks 14th. He's outperformed some pretty big names in the gp qualifiers and was pretty impressive in the swc. But certainly it's too high, pretty much guaranteed one such rider in the 20. Dolgins rankings have him at 37th which would seem about right.

Sure if you asked Martin he would think that was at the very least his position in the worlds best :P He did beat Jonsson and Holder in the SWC,so i guess around their position is about right.maybe just behind rather than just in front though,as i am not sure he could really be so consistent. On the other hand, you look at most of the top riders and they are quite inconsistent now

Vavulik comes in at 27th. Good performances in Poland (13th in averages) and The Euros, but only average in Sweden (33rd) and the GP qualifiers.

Updated rankings heading into the final GP in Melbourne.

1 Jason Doyle 9.59 2 Greg Hancock 9.54 3 Tai Woffinden 9.36 4 Bartosz Zmarzlik 8.98 5 Patryk Dudek 8.97 6 Grigoriy Laguta 8.94 7 Chris Holder 8.51 8 Niels-Kristian Iversen 8.25 9 Krzysztof Kasprzak 8.23 10 Piotr Pawlicki 8.22 11 Martin Smolinski 8.14 12 Emil Sajfutdinov 8.08 13 Nicki Pedersen 7.95 14 Antonio Lindbäck 7.82 15 Martin Vaculik 7.79 16 Andreas Jonsson 7.71 17 Fredrik Lindgren 7.68 18 Kenneth Bjerre 7.62 19 Artem Laguta 7.56 20 Piotr Protasiewicz 7.53

Smolinski the only real anomaly in there, though in fairness he performed solidly in the GP qualifiers and SWC, outperforming some much more accomplished name.

Next best Brit was Edward Kennet in 23rd spot.

GP riders just outside the top 20 include Zagar (24th) and Janoswki (26th). Harris the lowest ranked at 64th. Fricke the top ranked rider from the U21 series, in 29th spot.

Great to see the Swindon skip at number 1, 4 years ago he was a Robins reserve...fantastic achievement by Jase, who should have been in Melbs being crowned world champ.

I thought I'd add in my rankings to this thread.

These are only up to last weekend and don't include National Championships yet which the OPs do and also include a few more leagues than his but they shouldn't make too much difference as few if any of the top guys race in the extra leagues I have included.

The actual rating value is supposed to be able to be used to directly compare riders in a head to head. If 2 riders have the same value they have a 50/50 chance of winning against each other so, as you can see, the top 4 are very close. Much closer than in previous years I have tried this rating system.

1 Greg Hancock 25,094.69
2 Bartosz Zmarzlik 25,002.43
3 Jason Doyle 24,555.35
4 Tai Woffinden 24,099.30
5 Patryk Dudek 2
0,002.91
6 Chris Holder 17,253.11
7 Niels K Iversen 16,757.95
8 Grigoriy Laguta 16,289.12
9 Krzysztof Kasprzak 15,373.96
10 Nicki Pedersen 15,122.61
11 Antonio Lindbäck 14,765.13
12 Martin Vaculik 13,888.86
13 Emil Sajfutdinov 13,219.45
14 Janusz Kolodziej 13,212.64
15 Przemek
Pawlicki 12,897.99
16 Piotr Pawlicki 12,541.47
17 Piotr Protasiewicz 12,459.32
18 Vaclav Milik 12,440.65
19 Fredrik Lindgren 11,940.69
20 Leon Madsen 11,627.19
