MDL Play –Off Final 2nd Leg –Sat 8th October 6pm

CITY GEARBOXES Coventry Vikings (19) v Buxton Junior Hitmen (11)

The 2016 Midland Development League champions will be crowned at Coventry on Saturday (October 8th) prior to the Elite league Riders Championship. The MDL Play-Off Final 2nd leg between Coventry Vikings and Buxton Junior Hitmen will take place at 6pm with the gates at Brandon opening at 5pm.

The presentations to the two section winners plus the trophy and medals will take place on the parade for the ELRC which starts at 7.30 and this is a big honour for the youngsters in front of a large crowd.

The Vikings are 8 points ahead after the first leg at Buxton which was curtailed after heat 5 when a three rider crash in heat 6 saw the meeting abandoned with two riders requiring treatment in the ambulances.

Coventry team manager Laurence Rogers is hopeful his side can bring the championship to the club for the first time, “ The lads we have used this year have been magnificent. We have had a very young side who have done us proud and each one of them who has donned a Vikings race jacket has got us to this final. We have a lead to protect and it was hard choosing the four to represent the side in this all important meeting as they all wanted to be in the play-off final. I know that the ones not in the side on Saturday will be disappointed but will be backing their team mates fully to ensure they take a gold championship medal.”

TEAMS :

City Gearboxes Coventry VIKINGS : 1. Jamie Halder 2. Kyle Roberts. 3. Conor Dwyer 4. Henry Atkins

Buxton Junior Hitmen : 1. Ben Basford 2. Tom Brennan. 3. Ryan Burton. 4. William O’Keefe

Dissapointing to see so many team changes from the first leg and riders who have never ridden for the club in the MDL being brought in

to strengthen the sides.

Well, what a load of cods wallop!

Riding for Buxton in the 1st leg were Rothery, Isherwood, Wright and Dicken Jr.

So how come 4 totally differnt bods are lining up for the 2nd leg?

This is just a farce. Ryan Burton was meant to be riding at No. 4 for the Hitmen last weekend but apparently broke his toe so couldn't start.

So how on earth can he now be calling himself a Junior Hitman. Surely, if you have ridden on a regular basis for the senior team, you should be ineligible?

This kind of stunt just makes a mockery of what started out as a genuine competition and it's no wonder people look at speedway and laugh.

Please don't judge the Northern Junior League by the actions of the managers of these MDL sides.

We do have some loyalty to our riders!

Isn't there supposed to be a rule that riders can only ride in the Final when they have done a certain amount of the league matches?

I have had a quick check through the results, found all but one. (couldn't find one Coventry result)

The riders who deserve to be in the final by number of MDL league appearances are:-

Coventry

Mitchell Beckett 8. Aaron Butcher 6. Kyle Roberts 4. Henry Atkins 4.

Buxton

Sam Wright 8. Josh Embleton 5. Connor Fletcher 3. William O'Keefe 3.

The riders actually in the final with number of MDL league appearances are:-

Coventry

Kyle Roberts 4. Henry Atkins 4. Connor Dwyer 1. Jamie Halder has never ridden for Coventry, but rode for Buxton once!

Buxton

William O'Keefe 3. Ryan Burton 2. Ben Basford and Tom Brennan have never ridden for Buxton at all.

I would never tar everyone with the same brush and I am sure that most teams use a development league correctly.

But when managers start bringing in riders who seem to have little or no connection with the competition, I think that they are extracting the urine!

I am particularly disappointed that a team that I have done my best to support over the past few seasons thinks that this is some kind of smart move.

We need to be getting genuine, keen youngsters into this kind of racing not looking on it as a way to win cardboard trophies.

Disappointed.

With the introduction of the "squad system" this year and despite the reduced number of matches it is still disappointing that from the potential 12 matches available to riders it sad that from the "deserving" list Cov have 2 riders with 4 appearances & Buxton have 2 riders with only 3.

That said hats off to Messers Beckett & Wright for completing 8 each meetings for their respective teams so all is not lost.

Will have to look for the great posting from Mimmo last year as im certain riders were more consistently riding for one club than they have this season......

Below is a rough list of clubs from last year & the riders (with familiar names) who competed in most matches. Would make very interesting reading to see if any riders got near the completion rate of last season? (Yes there were a max of 18 matches per club last year vs 12 this season) but with last years mark of 9 matches for 50% completion vs 6 for this year it would be interesting to see how they stack up......

So, in Jason Pipe's latest monologue he says that Ryan Burton " will have a ride out to see how he feels this Saturday in our MDL final at Coventry".

Is that not a little insulting to the other riders in the competition and indeed to the competition itself to use the occasion as an opportunity to give one of the senior team riders a "ride out"?

How would one of the youngsters who has been plugging away all year feel when they are denied an opportunity to race on the big night because one of the big boys wants to see if his toe hurts?

This makes a mockery of the whole thing and it is sad that there is always some wise guy who is quite happy to ruin it for everyone else.

Just my opinion, obviously.

personally I don't think the make-up of any of the mdl sides matters..as long as some young riders who are willing to take some extra rides in front of an audience do so. It shouldn't be regarded as a competitive league results/table-wise. The league is merely an instrument for formalising 2nd half junior racing (they might all be called challenges tbh).

The second leg was played out in front of a few disinterested early arrivals for the ELRC , Laurence Rodgers' team of ringers took a hollow victory over Pipes similar team of ringers , while the youngsters who had got the teams to the final sat at home disappointed that Burton , Basford , Brennan ,Dwyer and Halder , had stepped in to steal their rightful places on the big night , after the meeting Rodgers went home to polish the trophy he was prepared to go to any length to get his hands on ,while Pipe went in search of his loyalty towards the lads who had ridden each week to get their team to the final , outside that nobody showed any interest .in a meeting which signalled the death Knell of the MDL

Great shame that the urine extractors ruin it for everyone else.

Kids, welcome to the world of speedway where being dedicated and honourable will get you absolutely nowhere.

If you ask for a copy of the MDL rules possibly you will find that any rider who has not made more than 50 National League Appearances is eligible to ride.

The League being used to help up and coming juniors who could not hold down a firm team place by being inconsistent or not having enough track time.
