More Strokes Than The Oxford And Cambridge Boat Race

Recommended Posts

Meetings postponed on the back of dodgy weather forecasts, Riders averages massaged, even have riders break the tapes on purpose. It’s safe to say that over the years the majority of promoters have tried things to give their team the edge. While at the time these strokes have the fans up in arms calling foul. There as some that when we look back make us smile and wish we’d had the nerve to pull them off ourselves and I’m sure every team as them. For example Ian Thomas managing to get R/R for the whole 1977 season to replace Egon Muller who had only ridden for Hull a handful of times in 1976

So lets hear your favourites

R/R for Tara O`Callaghan for Reading all season in 1997 after he broke his leg in the 1st match of the season was pretty clever. Don`t know who thought of that one ;) .

two more from the Ian Thomas play book were

getting a young Shawn Moran to ride under the name Dave East to get around paper work problems.

Proving the start and finish straight of the Hull track met with the minimum width requirements of the day using a doctored surveyor's tape

And who was the guy who couldn't find Peter Ravn's name in the programme?

Blimmin' fiddling Racers

One to top that, though. Oxford recalling the reigning NLRC champion Troy Butler in 1989... on a four-year-old BL average of 3.00 :D Dear old Bernard - never one to miss a trick!

All the best

Another tale worth re-counting and Arnie will know the year. Dave Mullett returned late in the season after his horrific accident at Smallmead with Andre Compton. he was understandingly very tentative and with the following season in mind a certain team manager give him 4 rides at Exeter( a track Dave normally loved riding at) when he scored 0 and then went out in heat 15 as well- also finishing last !!!!!! Dave was on a 3.5 ave approx. to start the following season-happy days !!!!!

Correction: Dag Lovaas R/R (for whole year) was White City 1977.

Also, Oxford followed the rulebook in 2001. On the other hand, Poole were twice given permission to break the points limit. Zetterstrom replacing Andersen, and subsequently Andersen coming back in towards the end of the season. If Oxford were selective in the use of R/R for Dryml in September and October, it was because big-mouth Havelock suggested it in the Sun newspaper in August. ;)

...as were Hackney and Hull that particular season.

Old 'Motormouth' himself!

...as he did for Robbie Gardner one year although he had retired and didn't even figure in the team's top three until it was pointed out to the referee by Tony Coupland (Middlesbrough/Teesside Team Manager)!
