Best Five Never To Have Raced League Speedway In Uk

Recommended Posts

The swede that rode at the world team cup final was lars ake Andersson.

I would put jack white who rode against English test teams in Australia in the late 60s, far as I remember never rode over here and Laurie hodgson who was coming over here but had a bad crash and was wheelchair bound

I seem to recall that Wimbledon were discussing the possibility of Mike Bast riding for them in 1975 but, again, nothing came of it.

The Mike Bast view on speedway in Britain (from his AMA profile): By the early 1970s, several U.S. riders, such as Scott Autrey and Dewayne Keeter, were leaving America to race Speedway in the British League, to qualify to contest the World Finals. Bast went to England to check it out.

“It was cold, miserable, the food was bad and there was no money,” he said. “I was making 50 to 60 thousand a year in America living at the beach."

That was Lars Jansson. I think you will find. I am positive Lars-Ake Andersson never rode in the UK.

My top five would be

Igor Plechanov

Boris Samorodov

Rune Holta

Andrzej Wyglenda

Art Pechar (although he rode in the UK, I am sure he never rode league)

Honourable mentions for Lubos Tomicek Sr, Valeri Klementiev, Timo Laine...

An interesting list chunky and I was impressed to notice in the 'honourable mentions' the name of Timo Laine (Finland). I saw him riding in Holland in the 1950s and he was a very good, proficient rider. Sadly, he is a name virtually unknown to British supporters.

Ake Andersson of Glasgow 1968 and Lars-Ake Andersson were not the same person.

My 5, in no particular order:

Igor Plechanov

Boris Samorodov

Mieczyslaw Polukard

Andrzej Pogorzelski

Andrzej Wyglenda

Phew, everyone is posting Andrzej Wyglenda now. I was worried when I posted him and no-one else had that I was missing something and he did have a British club somewhere.

All the best

Gene Woods had a short spell at Birmingham and Wimbledon and Christian never ventured over here i think he might of nearly signed for Sheffield once though.?

Now you've mentioned it, that seems to ring a bell, although I don't know what stage talks got to. Round about the time we were meant to be signing Keith Chrisco from Birmingham, I think he (Chrisco) had agreed terms and then decided about a week before the start of the season that he was going to stay in the States.

Think a mention for Wieslaw Jagus is missing. Was a bit erratic in his GP season, but made a few semi finals and one final.Bit unfashionable, but could possibly be placed in the top 5 instead of another Pole?I woud definitely have Boris and Igor, just for the names alone

Can remember the Chrisco speculation and he would of been a very good rider i think a very exciting rider.
