Brilliant find, a wonderful trip down memory lane. I remember standing there watching Steve Rider doing that interview and when the camera takes a different shot I catch a glimpse of myself. Thanks....

 

 

Great Find Young Trees. You must have been about 6 when that was shown. Lee was fined by Martin Rogers for that non-appearance then Cyril Crane overturned it and the fine was suspended.

 

Shame the feeling of going to Speedway back in those days couldn't be bottled.

 

There was never any love lost between Michael and Martin Rogers. I always felt he resented the adulation Michael received and the power it gave him. But in the situation above, I appreciated Martin's view having laid on a special plane to ferry Michael home. But again it was the BSPA being non-corporative by arranging a nothing meeting on the same weekend as the World Pairs, that created the problem. As soon as the original day was rained off, there was always going to be a clash. After riding and celebrating the re-arranged World Pairs, Michael failed to appear the following day for the nothing meeting, as did 6 other riders, but it was only Michael that was fined. It was Martin's way of telling Lee that it was him who was in charge..... Thankfully, it was eventually squashed...

Now the top riders want 20 bikes, all highly expensively tuned, they have a entourage of full time mechanics and helpers with brand new vans to ferry the bikes to the next meeting. Riders use high quality cars to the many countries they ride. The travel more air miles in a month than most of us do in a year. , and it all comes at a cost. Where once the 'Terry Betts' was seen as the bread and butter of our sport, now we can't finance their existence. "

Sadly, unless the BSPA give up on their dream of having the cream of world speedway riding in the PL, there is little possibility of supporter growth because the cream cannot be supported by the existing fan base while new fans are sought. There is no point in having the cream if promoters do not work Much Harder at real promotion / marketing. UK based new fans have no idea of who Emil S is or Greg H. - they are just rider names like Carl Wilkinson to the uninitiated. 30% of the "lost " fans have passed away or are too old / infirm to return. "big" names will not draw new fans in.

It needs to be one big league with UK based riders only on sensible pay rates and £10 admission. If that is marketed properly it might attract new fans to "speedway racing" per se. Sell on track excitement and new stars emerge from the riders pack naturally. And hasn't the One Over Eight rule stopped the existing big names returning anyway?

Unfortunately there are not anywhere near enough quality riders around to provide competitive racing bearing in mind doubling up could not exist.

Doubling up, does nothing for our sport. All it does is provide another pay packet for the riders, who basically think only of themselves. It makes the sport unsustainable.

 

We need strong leaders with strong ideas. We must forget about competing with the likes of Poland, Sweden and Denmark . We once ruled the roost but have lost out to our neighbours through bad habits. We need to concentrate on survival.

 

We need to forget about 'Fixed Race nights', forget about this '1 over 8' rubbish, forget about having different leagues,, We want one solidary league where all teams race against each other , on any day that suits each club.

 

Only then will we be able to start rebuilding the sport to a existence we can afford. It that means we lose all the top rides than so be it....

. The Stars have survived many seasons without D King in the team , so it won't matter that he's gone elsewhere for next season. Apart from winning the British championship on a wet track , he has never set the world alight.
