Havvy was everything we wanted from a world champion , young , stylish , patriotic and diplomatic , not a tramp covered in tattoes who looks like mickey the monkey and is an embarrassment to Britiain

Well said speedibee. As with his predecessors British riders who were also world champions, Gary Havelock was a dignified world champion. Sadly, times have moved on and not well in the opinion of many speedway devotees in regard to the most recent - and potentially again - British world champion.

Would u consider Mike lee a dignified world champion?

Both he and Havvy had bans as riders for drug use. Lees subsequent issues are well documented.

Would be interesting to note what you believe Tai has done that compares him unfavourably with those two riders?

Even Peter Collins took some time out of racing in the U.K. , and also refused to ride for the England team in 85 (although apparently wanted to ride in the pairs).

Couldn't agree more. Essentially the above posters are arguing about fashion. Dreadlocks? Tattoos? Who cares? I dare say in their era there were a few stuffy old boys offended by Split Waterman's brylcreemed barnet or Chris Pusey's porkchop sideburns.

The irony is that those who are so quick to condemn any modern rider for anything remotely non-conventional are the first to bemoan the "lack of characters these days...." :D

Exactly - Havvy's dreads were considered "out there" in 1992 if I remember correctly!

You pretty much are a kn0b of the highest order.

Havvy the drug taker was a far better role model dont you think. Dreadlocks as well?

Nice to see you condone drug taking in sport......is Lance Armstrong or Ben Johnson your hero.

A typical don't let the past rest comment. Havvy's offence was 28 years ago. He served a one year suspension for the offence, then went on to be a world champion. IMO it's time to move on and put the old offence very much on the so-called back burner.

However, this is speedway and for many BSF posters the past is never allowed to rest - even when misdeeds have been punished as is the case with Gary Havelock.

Er,this section is years gone by,so mentioning something that happened years ago is relevant to the topic and section!!!!

As it is you are just miffed that you said speedibees post was 'well said' and probably didn't know about the drugs as you have no real interest other than to try and put Tai down

You still haven't confirmed what misdeeds Tai has performed that make you compare him so unfavourably to a "dignified" world champ like Havvy or Lee?

Really?

So when you get a grade a prat like speedibee having a pop at Tai but then lording Havelock in the same sentence , its quite important to put his hat on straight
