Teesside Silver Helmet @ Redcar - 14/9

Scott Nicholls announced as first rider for what should be a good meeting. Will be joined by 6 of the Bears, with Danny Ayres riding for Cradley that night.

 

Bears are hoping to announce another big name rider very soon.

It's a very different silver helmet. It was first raced for in 1928. The actual helmet has been missing since the early 1990's. It possibly went overseas.

There was no Silver Helmet raced for back in '28 or '29 ! But a Golden Helmet race was staged regularly, by heats and a Final in 1928, and by a weekly challenge in 1929. All results were reported in 'The Auto' of the day.

 

The first mention of a Silver Helmet competition, again a 2nd-Half event, was in October 1945, won by Bill kitchen.

Obviously the full face helmet of today isn't that one.

Allegedly it is the oldest prize in speedway. that was how it was always promoted. How true it is I don't know, but it is a very old piece of kit. In the style of the very first riders.

Lewis Kerr has withdrawn as he now has a guest booking for Sheffield on same night - his replacement will be announced soon. format is 20 heats, with top two going straight to final and 3-6 in a semi final.

Due to his injuries suffered last week, Jason Garrity will no longer be riding in this. Newcastles Ashley Morris will take his place.
