Belle Vue Abroad

Recommended Posts

Looking for Belle Vue scorers for matches in other countries. I know they raced several times in Russia in the 50s etc and Hungary (1991) and need the details for my records, and details of any other trips in other countries the club undertook.

Thanks in advance...

Belle Vue did venture to Europe in the 1950s as I found out thanks to a Google search!

1955 was the year the Aces ventured behind the iron curtain to Poland. The first team from Britain to do so.Ron Johnston was almost arrested as he stepped off the plane as he pulled out a cine camera!!Austrian riders Fritz Dirtl and Jozef Kamper were involved as a 60,000 sell out crowd, with an estimated 20,000 outside saw the Aces win in Wroclaw with 38 to Polands 21 and the Austrian Motor Rennklub last with 12.

Belle Vue won a second meeting in warsaw 66-42.One Polish qualifier for a later world final said he hoped Peter Craven would win as he was the idol of all polish children....

Belle Vue team wasPC,Ron Johnston,Ken Sharples,Dick Fisher,Bob Duckworth,Peter William,Fred Rogers and Arthur Wright from Bradford as a 'guest' :P

In Wroclaw Arthur Wright scored 12 and PC 11

In Warsaw PC 16,Johnston 14,Sharples 11 and Williams 9.Sharples and Johnston stood down from their last rides to allow Fisher and Brand(??)their first and only rides of the tour

Possibility that they might have ridden in Leningrad in 1967.Leningrad rode at Belle Vue in 1968 as some invitation from the earlier meeting perhaps?

There was a feature, I recall, in a back edition of 'Backtrack' regarding 'The Aces' riding in Russia during the sixties...I may have had a programme in my collection before I sold it off!

Belle Vue did indeed make a trip to the Soviet Union at the beginning of October 1967. In pouring rain they lost a team match 47-61 to Leningrad, with Ove Fundin top scoring with 13 points. Tommy Roper scored 12 and Sandor Levai 8, with guests from Swindon Mike Broadbank and Bob Kilby contributing 7 and 5 respectively. Cyril Maidment was unable to travel due to a family bereavement. An individual meeting was also staged, in which Fundin finished third. Reflecting the expeditionary nature of the trip, the Aces riders took their own handlebars and rode JAWA-ESO machines provided by their hosts. The luxury of transporting the handlebars cost £11 for excess baggage,

The above photograph shows the touring Belle Vue riders lining-up at Leningrad, along with the local Russian riders, prior to the individual meeting on October 8, 1967. On the previous day, October 7, the Belle Vue Aces and Barrikada Leningrad had contested a teams match at the same track.
