Only if they're good enough though. I'm all for supporting British talent but they're not due a speedway career any more than anyone else.

Your sentiment is wrong. Clubs should do everything they can to encourage and keep British riders for the long term good of the sport in this country. Jacobs and Perks have both shown they can be good enough and it’s a travesty that neither has been signed.

While I agree with you.Much depends on the wage demands of these riders IMO .

So why do the 3 main leagues in Europe(Poland, Sweden & Denmark) have rules in place for home grown riders. We had it in place & still riders like Jacobs & Nielsen could not get starting places in 2017, & now the rule has been thrown to one side. We, also, had the EDR system even though it was biased & flawed.

But, we are not the only sport that dumps Brits for foreigners!

That is one. This weekend, how many Brits do you think will be in the starting 11 of the 20 teams?

It’s not wrong; it’s an opinion and a valid one at that.

On reflection, don’t you think it would be a better policy for clubs to do their utmost to foster British riders rather than to live by the mantra “we don’t owe them a living”?

And on reflection there is the argument if a British rider is good enough he'll make it anyway . Look at the strides made by Steve Worrall and Kyle Howarth  in recent seasons . You're only going to be successful by having riders increasing their average . Edinburgh's new foreign rider might do that , we know Jacobs ( with all due respect ) isn't . If results aren't that important , go to Buxton , the rest of us would enjoy the thrill of our clubs challenging for honours . You're not going to do that signing 5 point riders who will stay 5 point riders .

Then you get the likes of ellis perks, has his best year yet, goes from a 2.3 average to a 5.08, most improved rider of the year yet doesn’t get the chance to improve further in 2018, doesnt always help to be successful in this sport

Wrong. When teams are built to 42.5 you need only one or two riders to increase their average to make it a successful team. Even if Jacobs and Perks remained five pointers for three seasons there’s still every chance they would improve after. Howarth, Iversen and even Jason Doyle are good examples of riders who were stuck in a rut for three seasons and then kicked on.

I get all the put British riders first , but clubs want to try and be as competitive as they possibly can . Sure it might only take a couple of riders to improve significally and you have title contenders , but the more riders who do that increases those prospects .

It's unfortunate that the likes of Jacobs and Perks have so far been overlooked , but while the sport is average driven there is always going to be arithmetical casualties . And riders in the bracket between 5 and 6 are always the most vulnerable regardless of nationality .

Yep, it’s a free market, but for me keeping British riders is every bit as important as attracting new fans. I believe any under 25 Brit declaring a desire to ride in the CL and with a minimum achieved average of say 2.5 and willing to accept a standard rate of pay should be drafted, up to say three per team.

It would be disadvantageous to British speedway if the inclusion of the likes of Todd Kurtz and Jye Etheridge led to the retirement of Jacobs and Perks. It could become like Premier League football with fewer and fewer Brits replaced by more and more expensive foreigners (who have to be flown in) and a National team that suffers as a result.

......and now they are even more vulnerable due to foreigners who should be on sevens being turned into 5.2 ringers.
