Speedway Memorabilia

Recommended Posts

I have a large box of Reading programmes, a large box of Swindon programmes and a large box of assorted track programmes that I inherited from a very good friend of mine. He lived by himself and used to get to speedway most nights of the week ie Reading, Milton Keynes, Coventry, Oxford where he lived, Swindon. Sadly he is no longer with us and I have just got round to thinking about getting rid of the boxes to a good home. But where? Anybody any ideas? Whoever gets them would have to collect from near Oxford. Oh yes, he also left many Oxford programmes but I'm still reluctant to get rid of those although I've got most of them myself! All the programmes go back years from early 1970s.

Looks like a real treasure trove there for somebody. :t::approve::approve::)

I'd be more than happy having them Richard...it's just that I live 150 miles away!!

Hi Steve, nice to talk again. Maybe we could meet half way for a handover? Now where would 75 miles each get us to?

Yes a long time now Richard...I guess that one of the service stations on the M1? Leicester Forest East?

I hope you will keep us all up to date with this.

I think it is great. This is what supporting Speedway should be about - helping each other out.

Long ago I was told by someone older and wiser than myself "when collecting, one must specialise and focus on one area of interest, otherwise the collection will only grow until one finds oneself snowed under with a housefull of stuff". There are seveal TV prgrammes which cover this sort of thing. A couple of years ao I de-cluttered a tad and sold some 2,500 or so LP records, but kept the aritsts I was most into and also records that mean a lot to me. No real biggie as most, if not all, are easily replaceable should I feel the need to hear 'that certain sound', though online music channels and websites also play a part.

A few years before that I bought several boxes of speedway memorabilia off someone who was about to bin it all (!). It was mostly proggies and though I kept most of it, I was more than happy to pass on FOC various 'swaps' of mags & books + Hull 'swaps', Glasgow homes & aways and Scunny homes & aways to Matt, Jimmy 'Topcat' & Derek 'Diggler' my esteemed colleagues in speedway (fellow fanatics). They have done the same for me, before and since; it's good to give and swap....

I agree, you have to specialize otherwise you will need to build a loft extension. The trick is being able to let go of stuff you have collected. I've found downsizing easy, but I can understand how difficult it can be for some collectors to let go of some of their treasured items!.

Hi, I collect programmes, magazines and books in the main. But have misc other stuff including a bike. My programme collection is about 55,000 from 1946 onwards and my magazine collection must be 7,500+. I also compile stats dating back to 1965 and have published 2 yearbooks: one for 1982 and one for 1983. I plan to do more and am happy to help anyone with stats queries during 1965-1985 as I have most of that era compiled. I may be slow in responding as I work away from home a lot.

Belle Vue Speedway badges of all types, probably number since 1928 over 1,000 different badges. That includes official & unofficial, metal, plastic & picture badges. That is just one club.

If you were a completest collector,(and there are some) when you consider that a lot of individual club badges now number at least 8 badges per year per club, at say £5.00 a badge, and you want them all, it becomes a very expensive hobby.

It is also a case on E-bay of buyer beware, as not all badges sold are original old ones, there are a lot of remakes on the market. You can tell more from the back of a badge regarding its authenticity, than the front.

My son had a load of BV programmes in complete years from the 1980s, and was told to store them away for 50years or more, then they might be worth something, as it was at that time, they were virtually worthless.

Pretty much everything from the 1970s onwards is next to worthless. I ended up recycling my entire collection of magazines (every copy of the Star and Mail since 1977) and every Poole prog from the same date to 2000.

I never collected programmes, but I used to have a huge collection of speedway magazines (mostly Speedway News and Speedway World) dating back to 1934, all wrapped in brown paper parcels and indexed. When I got married in 1969 and came back from my honeymoon, my mother informed me that she had had a clearout for me "and had thrown all those old papers into the dustbin!!!!!!"

Cripes ! A simiar thing happened to me once, thanks to an ex-girlfriend, s'why I was so keen to keep many of the S Mails & Stars I mentioned earlier. Still can't believe I didn't arrange a Sweeney Todd-style ending for her - I didn't folks ok, weird sense of humour time  . My mum had a rule tied in with tidiness where anything found on the floor would was binned: if in doubt, throw it out. We reached a compromise after some her stuff was thrown out....
