Lakeside Future In Serious Doubt

Recommended Posts

Any land in the south east available today is brought by house builders theres little hope of building a stadium for speedway where its used mid april to september by say 1000 people once a fortnight

Dosn't work ! ;)Belle vue have had cash injection by council this yr to keep running

I may be stating the bleedin' obvious here, but I would suggest that these end-of-season Lakeside fixtures at Rye House are of crucial importance to the future of speedway in this part of the country. Rye House fans are pissed off because they have lost their team, Lakeside fans likewise because they have lost their track. However, if enough people come through the gate for these meetings, it might just mean that the Hammers name (and promotion) lives on, and competitive speedway continues at Hoddesdon in 2019. It's now up to us fans, effectively. If as an old Rockets fan you don't want to support a different team at your track, you have the right to choose not to go. Hammers fans who either are unable to make it to Hoddesdon, or prefer not to, can also make that choice.

So, you might say that in this instance the power lies with the fans. We can make this work - if we want it to. We just need to turn up.

Unless it is a dual purpose stadium with bangers/stock cars using it on alternative weekends/weeks.

Few if any stadia could survive on fortnightly speedway and speedway just has to accept that it needs partners particularly if you look at the numbers turning up for bangers and stock cars. Take a look at the recent world championship meeting at Kings Lynn on YouTube and speedway in this country can only dream of that level of numbers watching yet the same at Ipswich and other venues who host the four wheeled motorsport with crowds who flock to these meetings because it is value for money and entertaining. Then look at speedway with 15 minutes of racing stretched over two hours and follow my leader races, teams you can no longer relate too, few if any local heroes and infrequent meetings, fickle fans who only want league racing , riders that cannot be bothered, no joined up thinking amongst those who run the sport and that is why Speedway on its own is not a viable proposition and is in the state it is in at all levels.

I undestand those fans who do not want to travel to Rye House, many felt the same when Rayleigh closed. Sad to say that when you lose your local team it is hard to build up the enthusiasm travel afar to watch a home team. When you look back and realise the local teams  with Rayleigh, Romford, Crayford, Canterbury, Eastbourne, Ipswich and Peterborough with good local derbies plus Hackney, Wimbledon, White City and  Wembley at another level and London and the South East was hotbed of speedway. Alas no more and today it is a pale shadow of what it meant to supporters and the followings that these teams had.

Seems to be a different understanding between Lakeside and Peterborough as to when the remaining fixtures between the clubs will be staged. Different things on each clubs websites.

This is the most accurate definition I have read re UK speedway at the moment. VFM - dropping close to zero.

Agree totally and it is not because of viewing UK speedway from 1950  to 2000 through rose tinted spectacles. The slump of the last 20 years has just gone on and on and cannot be revived without razing to the ground what now exists.

Totally agree. How can fans plan anything when the clubs don't know what's going on.

Well, if Lakeside don't get some fixtures in soon, they are in serious danger of not even making the play-offs after looking near certainties for most of the season!

The BSPA & Peterborough websites state that lakeside are hosting the Panthers next Saturday, yet the hammers site says nothing regarding this fixture.

Well presumably someone from Lakeside informed the BSPA regarding this fixture, it wouldn’t have been generated by Peterborough.

It would be helpful if Lakeside confirmed or advertised the said fixture or they could be dissapointed with the attendance.

There seems to be a car meeting scheduled for Arena Essex on that day. Unless that has changed, I can't see the speedway being on.

Arena Essex have had The Rolling Thunder Show advertised as the 8th for months so as Lakeside only rent the arena for Speedway meetings and they don't have the 8th down for a meeting it seems somewhere along the way wires have got crossed but whatever it is the problem needs sorting fast so that fans and riders know what is going on

The fixture is to be arranged on the Peterborough website. Well that clears that one up!

That has been changed then - presumably at Lakeside's insistence.

Which is a shame. I was hoping to have two more visits to say goodbye to the old place.
