Derwent Park

The new stadium idea has been kicking around for a number of years now, and does make a lot of sense in many ways.

Both DP and Borough Park, whilst having history and 'character' are both decrepit and not fit for purpose. Not sure I would like DP as a second home Singy!

A single state of the art 6000 capacity stadium with a 3G/4G pitch is the way forward would need community facilities which would ensure that it was used by more than just the football and rugby clubs. A developer however would have to be found to bankroll the project, as Allerdale will not have the funding to do so, with their financial input probably being limited to the sale of the land to the said developer.

Developments of this type take years to come to fruition due to the lengthy consultation processes involved, therefore both existing grounds will be around for a while yet with THJ's assessment of 7 years being much nearer the mark.

THJ has beaten me to it, as I too don't think there is anything at present to prevent football clubs having a running track around their pitch, however 3G/4G pitches are not permitted, though they have them in Scotland and elsewhere in Europe. As they are developed further things may, and probably will change as clubs, particularly at lower levels strive to make the most out of their grounds to keep themselves viable. Man Utd. played on one last night in Bern, though Jose was moaning about it afterwards - no change there!

With regard to the Olympic Stadium, West Ham have installed retractable seating which covers most, but not all of the track area - they have laid artificial grass over the remainder and are presently in a battle to have it claret and not green!

As a football supporter too, I am against having tracks around the pitch as it detracts from the atmosphere and match day experience. Therefore I think that speedway needs a stadium of its own and would like to think that Allerdale would look on us kindly and include the development of Northside for speedway rather than a site for 'local travellers' as part of the whole project.

As others have already noted it would help our cause no end if we had more people coming through the gate, at least to match those attending the football and rugby in the town. What better time to get down to the speedway than in the next few weeks when a local team has a chance of winning a national title - not something that the football or rugby teams have done for a while;)

You have explained exactly what West Ham have to do to cover the Athletics Track from being visible.(Premiership clubs seem to get away with doing what they like, as there was a written rule that stated no club can relocate within 3 miles of another League clubs postcode, which is why Orient kicked up a fuss, but were just over run) Gateshead would not be allowed to play at their Stadium if they get promoted from the NL. Looking on Google Earth, selling off Derwent Park and redeveloping Borough Park for both sports, with the Speedway behind on the old dog track would look like a good option.

Yep, can see that working.

Almost going the full circle.

Yeah but back in the "old" days the silencers were of a completely different design to what they are now and the current noise standards must be being met to allow speedway to continue at DP, moving to a redeveloped multi use stadia on the current Borough Park site puts the speedway no closer to housing than we already are at DP? :t:

Apart from the slight problem that the centre green pitch is not big enough for adult football or rugby!

Then keep the shape of the track something like the NSS but just make it bigger to fit around the bigger pitch..

My point was more about any threat of damage to the surface should anyone put up complaints..

It's a shame DP and Northside are both under threat. The coastline opposite the latter is a sight to behold.

He was referring to the NSS centre green I'm sure......Derwent Park has a full size rugby pitch in regular use by Workington Town RLFC

The size of the rugby pitch has been sufficient for both Workington Town's matches, as well as international games - most recently Scotland v New Zealand. However, it is not nearly a full sized pitch. Even a casual glance shows that the distance between the 40m and 30m lines on both sides of the pitch are not even close to being 10m apart.

Is this a new rule because it didn't stop Rotherham from playing four seasons at Don Valley in Sheffield between leaving Millmoor and building their new stadium, mostly in the bottom division.

I am not quite sure, but I think any new club wanting promotion to the FL can't have an Athletics Track around the pitch. Also, I believe Rotherham might have been given dispensation because a new ground was planned. West Ham were just allowed to bend the rules completely because they are Premier. Any other club would not have been permitted to do what they have done(mainly moving into another clubs post code)

The Comets' biggest problem is that they have nothing to offer the development other than potentially renting the stadium. The club also has a chequered history and regularly (like most speedway clubs) seem on the verge of closing/seeking new owners. You can understand why the football and rugby clubs would be loathe to build a new stadium which would be unpopular with their supporters, only to find that speedway disappears a few years after it is finished. To be part of the scheme someone has to offer money on behalf of the Comets - then they might find a way to include a speedway track.

Also tho George what have the Reds/RL club got to offer a new stadium?

Neither are competitive, Reds will very likely never be back in the FL and 42 yrs of failure probably justifies that, as far as Town are concerned they can barely compete in the league they are in and are more interested in the peripheral usage of the stadium by external factors?

It's without doubt a very awkward situation especially for three poorly supported sides to justify one over the other, a multi sports stadium nowadays would have to accommodate all sports or risk losing someone and potentially have a ground more beneficial to other activities than the sport itself that it's supposed to be built for? ;)
