Hate to do this to you, but Coombes was a Kiwi...

Thanks Steve. Long time ago and age is messing with memory these days anyway!!

Will add Phil Baker instead - not too well known elsewhere but hugely popular in his spell as an all action second halfer at Weymouth.

:)

Darcy Ward - The most naturally talented rider I've ever seen. Gutted he's not entertaining us in the gp's.

Craig Boyce - Livened up a boring '95 British gp.

Leigh Adams - Superb stylist who wasn't hard enough to be world champion.

Jason Crump - Son of the animal!

Phil Crump - the animal! A strong bloke who won a lot of 16 lappers.

Jason Doyle - The most worthy world champion ever.

Todd Wiltshire - Fastest alive over the first 25.

Garry Middleton - The only rider who packed a revolver in his kit bag.

Ryan Sullivan - Smooth as silk around the EOES. Should've beaten Crump to the world championship.

Dave Hamnett - A fast gater. He should have achieved more. A Hackney favourite r.i.p.

my favorite Aussie rider was Bob Valentine

and the rest of my personal top 10 includes Alan Rivett, Steve Regeling, Rod Hunter, John Titman, and Gary Guglielmi.

... and my favorite Aussie of the pre-war era, is the one-and-only Sig Schlam

plus Frank Pearce, Ernie Evans, and Tiger Lewis.

there are so many more, of course

There was a very interesting interview with Bob Valentine in 'Backtrack' a couple of years ago where he described a potential 'scuffle' he had with Gordon Kennett after a particularly hard race but both ended up shaking hands.

Here's my 10 favourite (not best) Australian riders: Vic Duggan, Vic Huxley, Frank Dolan, Steve Langton, Lionel Van Praag, Max Grosskreutz, Aub Lawson, Jack Young, Ron Johnson, Charlie Spinks.

This is an item on Lionel Van Praag, speedway's first world champion as a Wembley rider in 1936.I saw him as a New Cross rider in 1947.

Just reading about the time Frank Pearce and 4 other top riders went on strike for more money!!! Maybe the first speedway strike ?
